SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

Partner's mum's being tested. Results next week.

We're assuming it's not, as she recovered from the worst of her symptoms pretty quickly but I guess many do. Only one way to be sure.

will you still drop her off on monday ?

we are really debating atm to stay home with our daughter come monday

As long as me and my GF have to go to work we have no choice unfortunately. And my GF has also the "It's just a flu" stance anyways (like 90% of people over here).

You walk over to her right now and tell her that a talking pigeon says "it's not a flu it's closer to viral pneumonia you utter bellend, now give Outlaw a gobble".

So its getting real now... the Italian government is looking to enact a law in the next few hours that prohibits entry or exit from Lombardy and places a number of big cities in other regions under quarantine and stops people moving around. It's pretty much the equivalent of sealing off Greater London.

it’s needed god knows what happened but visitors from Italy basically spread it throughout the whole of Europe. The numbers are way off on official cases I think.

Are you in the UK - are results taking a week? A lad from work was allowed in on Monday having been in Asia for a week. Got tested Tuesday, no results by Friday - had hoped no news meant good news...

Jesus. Locking down the whole Lombardy region - no one allowed in or out for a month. Their hospitals must be about to collapse or something.

Can a European democracy impose a Chinese-style widespread and long-term lockdown without people rioting? We're about to find out, I guess.

Arent the Italians one of the oldest populations in the world basically a recipe for disaster if something serious isn’t done.

Yes, second oldest after Japan I believe. I think the disaster is here, and it is now sadly.

If the health system collapses under the weight of admissions, everyone with any serious illness will obviously be in danger.

Genetic mapping is now saying the first case may have started in Germany and spread to Italy undetected from where it went everywhere.

Italy shutting down Lombardy is nice, but should have been done much earlier.

China gave the blueprint on how you can combat this disease. Unfortunately, only South Korea seemed to have listened. If the entire world would have gone in a similar quarantine to Wuhan, followed by extreme testing like China and South Korea are doing, probably the worst would have already passed.

There's over 10 million people in the Lombardy region. It's bound to impact on the rest of the country in a major way.

Yep, there's a mass exodus happening here as I'm typing this, everyone is fleeing while they can, streets leading towards the highways are backed up with vehicles right now. Guess I'll be living in a ghost town for the coming weeks.

Yeah, we're down on the south coast of England.

My mum has hypertension and diabetes and has just turned 70. She also works two days a week volunteering as a teacher for a local school. Fan fecking tastic...

And that's why you don't leak news of an impending lockdown before it's active. Now the virus is going to be spread about even quicker.

And they are taking the disease elsewhere?

Stupid italians. Should have enforced the lockdown before announcing it.

things turned bad really fast . if you look at italy you get an image what will go down all around europe in 2 weeks

You know I can't stand him but I think this one is likely a nothing burger. Thermo Fisher is a huge company and own Applied Biosystems. I doubt he knows TF owns AB.

Fair enough, I just wouldn't put him past it tbh. You must admit it is strange how he refused the kits in February.

We're just wondering where they're all going. Presumbly to family elsewhere in Italy? What about their jobs -are these all non-working folk?

Our little village is absolutely packed in August, when everyone comes "home" for the holiday month. Makes me more worried, I have to say.

Whatever happens you must assume the Italian economy will be pushed well into recession by this. I doubt it can take the same punishment that the Chinese economy did

Hard to tell how is this gonna play out, but it is important you take care of yourself. If you can stay home as much as possible, do it, while taking all the extra precautions if you need to go out.

Yep, it seems so. It also seems that the number of infected per capita is double of that of China, so it might really get ugly there. With the last recession having affected Italy far more than the other developed big European countries (except Spain), it is a real pity.

I got tested week and a half ago. It went from 48 hours wait for results, to 72 hours, to “we’ll call you.” I ended up just getting Public Health England’s local office number and managed to get hold of a doctor there. I got my official results after 6 days

About a fourth of the population here in my city are students at the university and pretty much all of them come from all over Italy, I reckon they're all trying to get back home to their families while they still can. This is also a commuter city where people spend weekdays attending school/university/working and go home over weekends so I guess everyone that's basically not from this city is leaving right now.

Just wanted to say what a bunch of cretins are sitting at WHO still not calling it a pandemic. Corrupt to its core.

Any idea how quick symptoms are meant to show? I saw him Monday morning and I feel perfectly fine now.

I hate the hysteria going around and don’t want to add to it, but there appears to be a lack of info and people just scaring the shit out of each other on Twitter etc.
