SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

People using this to score political points. Shouldn't be surprised though to be honest. Corbyn would have it all sorted by now no doubt.

Totally agree if Labour were in power just as an example they would have forced that Tory mayor of London to shut all of the major parks in the capital as is happening on the continent And which he has the power to do. Oh wait perhaps the mayor of London is not a Tory after all. Wish we could all come together during the crisis. The time for point scoring is when we have got this thing under control. I just hope the medical advice the government is receiving turns out to be right. Be damned if I am going to secretly wish we have buggered it up just so that I can spout that red or green or orange is better than blue.

I think that we have to accept that there will be casualties and the reality is that it would be better for all of us if they were limited to the old, sickest people among us. It's harsh but necessary to be pragmatic.

That’s exactly what the calculations in the hospital will be when they get overloaded. The harsh reality is that younger people are more important because they are the workers that create productivity and provide the services that sustain the economy and society. Children are more important than us all too.

Supermarkets should be closed to stop people packing in. No wonder it’s still spreading. People need to get rations and allocated time slots to go pick them up from a local center controlled by the army
The problem is that every town in the UK has a massive retail park or two with huge superstores, and high street grocery shops are almost a thing of the past. The retail parks are designed to pull in large numbers of people, there's loads of choice of different foods in every category and people have got used to that - hence the queues. In reality, you don't need all those nice different pre-packaged food things, but many people don't know how to even put a basic meal together these days.

WHO: "Lockdowns don't beat the virus. There needs to be more focus on identifying the infected and mapping their social contacts."

Giving out about people commenting on the British government's poor initial efforts to combat this is the UK equivalent of "now is not the time to talk about gun laws".

Tedros is the biggest clown in history. We are so, so far past the point of contact tracing. That shit was relevant in February. Unless this is an old quote.

@Jack-C20
Every shop or public amenity or is closed except grocery shops, pharmacies, tobacconists and newsagents.
You may only go outside for food, medical reasons, work or other situations of necessity. You have to have a form with you when you leave the house and your ID, in case you are stopped by police.
You are supposed to stay within your own Comune except for unavoidable reasons.
Outside spaces such as parks and playgrounds are closed.
You are not allowed to be outside in a group (more than two people). One person only to go into shops.
As of last night, only essential businesses/industries may continue operation, other factories have to shut down till April 3. Construction sites too, unless they're working on roads or health facilities.

I've just been looking at the newspapers and it sounds like you'll have to have your temperature checked if you go to a shop or a pharmacy, or if you're stopped outside by the police.
Thanks man appreciate it. Everyone I spoke to at work or whatever sees the word ‘lockdown’ and assumes everyone apart from key workers are locked in essentially. I’m an electrician doing site work so thought I’d be at work for a while but if Italy have just shut construction sites I guess we’re only a few weeks behind.

I’ve understood to seriousness of this for a few weeks now but every day it feels more and more real, or perhaps surreal might be more true.

His resume seems to contradict that. And it's a new quote from Mike Ryan, CEO of WHO's Health Emergencies Programme.

Don't be so bloody stupid. This virus doesn't target the people that Tories hate. It probably targets their supporters more than it hits whoever Cummings might despise.
Cummings is like Bannon.

They are Leninists.
They beleive in burning down the system and rebuilding it in their own ideal from the chaos.

Its why he hates MPs so much, he seems them as pawns of a system he despises.

It is very much his ideology described in that times piece.

Yup, that’s what many don’t get about FULL lockdown, it doesn’t need to go anything close to that far to be “successful”. If you find people congregating in large group, fine them big fines.

But that said, 200 spread out on the hill at Bondi isn’t where people are going to pick up or spread Covid-19. That fact isn’t stopping a massive panic there about it though, or mass shaming online.

Closing public transport, bars and shops is enough.

I dont think that's right anymore. It cant be. I hope i am wrong but the virus does not seem to be stopping.

Personally, I think we may have overestimated the fatality rate but hugely underestimated the transmission rate. Italians have been, by and large, sitting at home amongst the world's strictest restrictions for the past fortnight but new cases just keep coming.

There are two other possible other explanations i can think of. Each individual who caught the virus 2 weeks ago pre lockdown has been isolated with the 2 or 3 people they live with, who have now all caught it, but soon we will see an abrupt drop in new cases as these family transmissions dry up. Or, as Italy only tests for hospitalisations now, there is a further week long lag on top of the 1-2 weeks incubation period for symptoms to show.

Cuba apparently sending medical professions to help Italy's crisis.

To be fair if that's from today then it opened at 9 for NHS and Tesco staff, however tills wont open til 10 so they'll have been a queue when it opened to the public.
There is zero chance all those people are NHS and Tesco staff. This is a something that’s been announced by HO at Tesco but will very likely not be implemented well or at all at store level.

So it's already too late for the UK.
What exactly is too late?

It's terrible and everyone should take precautions but Italy, ourselves and the world will get through this and the world will move on & hopefully learn lessons.

The world isn't ending any time soon. The vast majority of people will see the other side of the outbreak. So instead of being all about doom, let's be smart, take steps for your own safety & others and we'll get through this.

To avoid what's happened in Italy, obviously we'll get through this and come out the other side in a year two years but the government haven't done enough with the time they've had.

In a few weeks it'll be a hella lot clearer how complacent the government have been.

I was more referring to in Europe sorry. It doesn’t seem to have happened in France, Italy, Spain and other countries where lockdowns have been more severe.

I suspect it is also a problem of the communication strategy there (or lack thereoff). We saw nothing of that sort here, people got ready throughout the past two weeks, not all at the same time.

When government imposed lockdown measures, the vast vast majority of people here were already doing it out of their own volition.

Spent yesterday creating an emergency ward next to ICU and also adapting two theatres for Covid patients. It’s really tricky as there has to be one way traffic for patients whilst still running emergency theatres. It’s the calm before the storm I feel. Our hospital is doing what it can but that Sky News video above is quite sobering. I’ve even shaved my beard because there is a shortage of hoods! Damn!

Lockdowns won´t beat the virus, but it slows down the spread of it, so that the health system won´t (or to a less extend) get overloaded. UK changing their strategy in the middle of it (from herd immunity, to social distancing) can hardly be taken as proof of steady leadership.

Sorry to hear about the beard.

Keep it up, mate!

What are older Indians like in terms of health? I'm assuming you don't have high levels of obesity, diabetes or hypertension either.
Obesity is on the up, but diabetes and hypertension is already a huge problem, I think a lot of it is undiagnosed as well.

Good quality public healthcare has extremely low penetration, private healthcare is out of the financial reach of most.

The government is insistent that there is no community transmission (yet). When that starts happening, it will not take too long for things to get out of control.

Good luck!

How many patients do you think your hospital can manage before it starts to get overwhelmed?

The government is insisting that's the case while there's already a confirmed case in Pune. It's a load of bollocks.

More and more doctors in France are asking to fast track the tests with Cloroquine, the usual long trials cannot happen in this crazy situation basically. Whatever can save people's lives must be done

We had a police officer alongside management checking id badges but some probably did sneak through.
I took 1 look at the sheer bedlem inside and fecked off home. I've never seen that store as packed as it was at 10am. Lunacy.
