SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

From piers

HORRIFYING: One family in New Jersey had dinner together last week. 4 are now dead from Coronavirus, 2 more on life support.

Part of the reason why I expect it to be particularly bad in America is due to the existing issues with obesity:

This is from 2010 but I can't imagine it's improved. Obesity almost without exception comes with a whole host of underlying health issues.

Living in Dublin, or should I say existing in Dublin. Sister and brother in Derry and mother in care home up there. All grand at the moment thanks

Used to work with a Deery many years ago in Stream
Stream that’s going back a few years, not sure if it was any of my ones but don’t think any of them worked in there.

Yep, most Tesco home delivery stuff is literally a Tesco assistant walking around the normal shop, picking up your stuff and putting it in the bag. There's a limit to how many substitutions a shop will make before the order becomes impossible - particularly when basics like milk, eggs, loo roll, soap shelves are empty.

It's why Morrisons (and presumably other supermarkets) are trying to set up packing lines to put together standard hampers of stuff for delivery. That's such a change in their systems though that it'll take a week or two before we see it.

Meanwhile all the best to your in-laws I hope they get better news (and what they need) soon.
I suggested the hamper idea in a thread in the general. It would stop hoarding if everyone did it.
I’ve just been looking at the Tesco twitter feed, it’s becoming common for orders to be cancelled due to “store issues” (empty shelves).
Unfortunately they will have to venture out. Problem is that as they have found, even going to the OAP time, it’s still very very busy. They described trying to get milk as madness as it was 3 rows deep of people trying to get to it! There has to be a better solution than this, people are literally going to kill each other trying to get food! Maybe the best solution is complete lockdown and everyone gets allocated a time slot to go to a supermarket/shop/food centre. Alternatively hire security/police/army for all stores controlling amounts. Army cadets can help restock quickly

Clearly the system isn’t working because of human nature to survive

Going to be tough for UK with mothers day this Sunday, Easter and the sun coming out this time of year.

We should be staying in and wearing masks to the shops and around other family members but we'll do the exact opposite.

One of the big reasons we don't see outbreaks in other Asian countries is masks stop most or all droplets going up into the air. Just think how fast it can spread if someone coughs in a supermarket or at home, multiple people exposed who then expose others and it rapidly spreads. Also masks can stop you breathing in heavy dose of airborne droplets. I see people coughing on food shelves, with a mask on you can stop doing that but of course you need to change them often. People in the west just don't want to wear masks, like when bicycle helmets were seen as funny looking but decades later we got used to them.
Luckily I sent my card early to my mum as I thought things might go to sh!t. Also got cards for my wife hidden in the house, small gift and a box of chocolates. Normally I totally spoil her on this day so I’ll have to come up with practical ways to make her day as nice as it can be stuck indoors

Quite a lot of reports of american senators selling of stock in February after a behind closed doors meeting on the virus.

Anyone have more on this, surely thats insider trading?

Insider trading happens every single day. No it’s not right. But nothing will happen to those people because they make the rules. People will only take a fall if it suits someone important, politically.

I'm sorry. I've been calling friends and family and doing therapy by phone (not everyone has money to do this I know) and it's made me feel less alone, though hasn't helped with some other things (rage, anxiety). I don't know how it is with young people (first time I've ever not included myself in that, 33) but people my age and up were constantly on the phone until 10 years ago so are all used to hour long phone calls and they go by in a snap.
That’s what I’m doing as well. 30 here but somehow no longer used to long calls

Has there been any reported instances of someone younger than 45 and in good health(non-smoker, no preexisting condition) passing away, apart from that one doctor in Wuhan?

It seems like around 30% of patients in the hospital are younger than 45, but it's hard to find stats over how many of these people pass away(without having a preexisting condition).

I can only speak for Italy but as of 17 March there had been 17 deaths under 50, with the youngest being 31. 5 of those were under 40 and all had serious pre existing diseases.

Thanks for the update! No healthy person below 40 dying so far in Italy is uplifting reading.

Now if only everyone in the rest of the world could take social distancing more seriously so that not more middle-aged and elderly people die...

GOVERNMENT GUIDELINE: 'Please avoid walking off 200-ft cliffs (and so potentially landing on other people).'

BRIT: "Huh! No stuffed shirt or foreign virus is telling ME not walk off 200-ft cliffs! I've always been a rebel..."
*walks off 200-ft cliff*

BRIT: "Ow."

I worked for Stream in Dublin on the eircom contract. They flew us all up there to show us how great they were when they were taking over.

That’s funny, I was working in the Eastpoint office just round the corner before we shifted to Santry. Did you know a lad called Robert George?

Their refusal to criticize a man who's publicly undermining them has absolutely nothing to do with the large sums of money he donates to the Conservative party I'm sure
Please this isn't the time for politics. I'm sure the UK government is just following the science by not criticising one of its donors.

Funny how, whenever the Right f*ck up, it's 'not a time to make political capital' out of it...

A Bollywood singer apparently lied about her travel history (London) came to my city and attended a party with more than 200 guests including politicians and officials. She came back positive for Corona. The whole part of the city where she lives is apparently being quarantied and sealed off. She might be our patient 31.

I wonder if the UK's two worst hit places (London & Glasgow) will be shutdown today. Tenuous I admit but someone I know well has a close relative in the army who reckons the forces are expecting to be deployed to the streets soon.

Where are you?

The army being deployed doesn't automatically mean some sort of martial law as people seem to be expecting. They will just be acting as additional policing numbers in a different uniform, and will probably (if not already) be given some policing powers to issue fines and send people home etc.

No way, I do know Rob yeah. I was one of the TLs in Eastpoint in the eir building. We ended up moving to Telephone House and were only just made redundant last year.

I was the Snr TL for the Nikon team, Rob worked over in our building for the Palm team before moving over to Eircom. Small world.
Finally got made redundant in December when Nikon moved

I'm driving at one of the busiest roads in Belgium daily, and there's hardly anyone around. It's spooky actually. Last night when I drove home it took 5 minutes to see the first car, otherwise there are thousands.
The busiest street in Brussels was completely empty yesterday too.

Just come back round the M25 and it's rammed as usual, all east London into Essex is same 'ol.

We've really done feck all over here

LBC is a thoroughly depressing listen this morning. So many people in completely dire straits and not knowing where their next pay check is coming from or how they're going to pay bills/buy basic necessities.

Government is being far too slow to act.
they should get a life.
