SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

It's really human nature though isnt it?
We weren't worried about reports of bus drivers falling asleep/not getting enough rest until some major crashes happened. Same with airplane incidents and the various underlying reasons for them that could have been prevented, surely Trump is not possibly going to win, etc etc.

You're right. I wonder whether what we're seeing now is worse than what would have resulted if we banned international travel to and from China for a few weeks. Put some control measures in play - screening at every possible destination and slowly opened the borders. Instead, we let the enemy infiltrate our systems with open arms.

The update my firm got compared to the update other very similar firms in the same industry got, is a fairly cowardly little cop out.

I'll have to come in tomorrow.

Thee worst logic of all time. It isn't better they are at school, as they will be spreading it wildly between each other and taking it home with them to then infect their parents who will then infect everyone else. You need to implement social distancing ASAP. Work will have to stop for all but essential trade and even then restrictions will have to be put in place.

The UK shouldn't be different from any other country. Singapore etc are the gold standard for this. We should follow not blindly go down the route of bravely carrying on.

Only if you think preventing the spread long term is possible, which lots of people don't. Countries that are seen as the gold standard now may just have their peak next winter.

Has the world benefitted from acting so late? I suggested a month ago that the more time it takes, the more people will panic. Now people are panicking. The mind boggles. I actually cannot believe that, having known a war was coming, we weren't the slightest bit prepared.

Well taking Ireland as an example, some people were demanding schools be closed when the first case was announced in a school back on the 29th of Feb. Since that time 42 further cases have been announced, most of which were unrelated to any schools and would not have been impacted at all by that measure.

So waiting until now to close the schools will certainly see the measure having a much greater impact and benefit. Which is important given there's a limit to the amount of of time parents can spend off work minding their kids without badly impacting essential services.

Also in terms of panic, it's hard to imagine that the gradual build up to to these measures has made things worse than suddenly announcing them from the start would have.

So in certain cases and with certain measures, delay has almost certainly been a big help. Though obviously that depends on the individual circumstances of each country.

That's a very isolated case though, there will be people that have been self employed for years. Maybe Brexit etc is already taking its toll, margins are smaller etc etc. This on top of that could be brutal.

Yes, people do choose to be self employed, and to some degree should factor things in. It doesn't make the current system fair though
Fair enough. As I'm not self employed I probably don't understand it as well as some. It was this particular case that slightly irked me.

I work for a university but am based at a government building. Business as usual at present but I suspect the Uni is going to close by Monday, what that does for us here is anybody's guess.

My company are also massively fecking up at the moment. We're a manufacturing site and really the only guys who actually need to be there are the production operators (machinists etc).

But everyone from engineers to HR are still coming in. Now imagine if they have to stop production early, because some HR twat got it when he didn't even need to be in office to do his job? It's incredibly stupid. Even us engineers don't really need to be there, and if worst comes to worse we can get called in as of when something breaks down.

No panic buying of food or big queues at my local supermarket but the toilet rolls had gone.

Was thinking maybe I should buy some extra bits soon to put in the freezer.

Big press conference at Downing street by looks of it, lockdown measures?

i'm hoping my office doesn't change its mind on WFH if the government decides to take a lax approach.

Agree with you, it would irk me too. Someone who's been skiving paying their way for donkey's years suddenly expecting to be treated in the same way as those who do pay their own way. Victim complex, pure and simple. And no, that comment isn't aimed at self-employed people - I feel for them BIGTIME, but I have zero sympathy when someone gets their comeuppance for not paying tax like the vast majority of honest self-employed people.

@RobinLFC @Ainu and other Belgians, just got information from someone who works at the press office of the Belgian government, that we are going in lockdown. Press conference this evening. Of course I can't confirm if true, let's see tonight.

Lots of meetings with big wigs in the college in Belfast today. Lot of talk about getting lists of student contacts ready, getting pay claims in ASAP, getting remote access sorted etc

I'm expecting communication later, or tomorrow at the latest that we'll be closing sites

It's probably worth having a bit of food set aside just in case you have to self isolate. If you don't end up needing to you then don't have to go shopping for a week or so win-win. Probably don't need 800 toilets rolls though...

BBC hinting that government not expected to take any physical measures; no school closures, no sport cancellations etc.

Instead they're expected to simply make a statement giving more advice to the public including measures to avoid spreading the disease.

FFS.
Why are people so keen to be quarantined? Possibly prematurely? There’s a world outside of just managing the coronavirus which billions more of people depend upon for food, power, heating, medicine, etc.

If quarantine measures are not going to affect you and you can already adopt that kind of lifestyle, just go ahead and do it yourself. If you know best what is right for you and those who you are responsible for, just go ahead and make the changes you need.

Edit: affect/effect

If this happens it's going to royally feck up my plans. I've got hand ins on April 2nd and Viva and Exams at the end of April then I'm done with Uni. I was planning on wrapping up and going back to work as soon as my hand ins are done but if it's extended and all our hand ins are pushed back to summer it's going to be a major headache.

Haha

because i imagine a lot of companies will base their decisions on government decisions.

Because not everyone has the freedom to do that? Companies are taking government advice..

Boris - "People are going to die"

If you wanted to engineer a virus which prunes the population, this would be it

First it targets the elderly and weak, then it aims to reduce population growth rates. Mother Nature has climate change under control after all.
It should not be a problem (at least in developed world). With DNA technology, everyone can have kids (as long as you have money) nowadays.
