SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

In my office in Dublin I think we're gonna get the "Well you can work from home if you feel its necessary" line. Which is bollocks really as people will still feel like they can't.

Not me though. Not this guy.

My London offices closed for a couple of weeks at least now too.

I personally think the media are just perpetuating a panic response. It's fecking annoying. What kind of lesson does this teach the kids? When faced with something potentially problematic, shit yourself constantly, think illogically and panic.

That said, the 3% fatality rate being banded around is complete horseshit imo. There will be far more than 480 cases of corona in the UK. Far more. The thing that bumps up the mortality is the lack of reporting/testing for milder symptoms.

Hopefully that bullshit anti-scientific, horeshittery where people decide they know more than people that, you know, study this stuff, because their mate Dave in the pub said it's a bit like the flu, literally fecking gets people killed.

It suddenly feels like we’re all living in a zombie movie. Characters always do unbelievably stupid shit in zombie movies and you think people would never behave like that in real life.

Anyway, I’m off to the shopping centre.

Somebody in our office has just had a call from his kids school. There's been a confirmed case there and it's been shut. He's on his way now to pick up his daughter.

The amount of bankruptcies that this is going (and already started) to cause will be unprecedented. The economy is going to take a serious crash that will take years to recover.

It's not a matter of opinion. Mortality rates are between 8% and 0.5% in countries where outbreaks have occurred. The 3% estimates being touted are based on mortality rates seen under a collapsing infrastructure. In short, if the hospitals can cope and the spread does not go exponential mortality rates will be considerably lower hence the measures to slow the spread that are being proposed.

The lesson it teaches the kids is that taking precautions to minimise deaths is a good idea for society as a whole. Idiots stockpiling toilet paper notwithstanding, it is important that the public alters its collective behaviour to, literally, save lives.
In the UK, they will not be able to. The state of the bed situation in Glasgow alone, I'd hate to see what will happen if it continues to increase. The NHS is on it's knees as it is.

I think delivering home testing kits where people can test themselves and self-quarantine if need be is a good idea. Granted, this comes with it's own logistical challenges, but the premise remains. The Royal in Edinburgh has a drive-through testing centre where you present if you feel unwell and may have had contact. Someone in a HazMat suit comes out, swabs you, takes details and off you go awaiting the results as you self-quarantine. This seems sensible to me (rather than sitting in a waiting room with other people and potentially exposing others).

With regards the mortality rate, the reason I stated my opinion was because I read quite a lot of fear-mongering on social media and news outlets, which, in turn, panics people. They constantly use relative risk figures to scare people. I'm not saying that we should be blasé about this at all, but it's important people try and think about things logically before buying shares in Andrex.

I've seen folk stockpiling toilet roll, pasta, hand sanitiser. One lady I saw had 6 or 7 bottles of the stuff. Its infuriating. It's also frustrating me that sport is being so slow on the uptake, F1 in particular.

I think for once the banks are acting well for a change, interests slashed again, mortgages deferred rumors they will do even more depending how bad it gets. Of course this could change.

Between you and Spiersey, i'm sure they will be in touch to bring the economy back via the betting firms..

And if you're from the UK that economic damage will be on top of whatever damage Brexit does in the coming years.

If you supplied people with testing kits to test themselves they still ne to go to a lab for results, and you can be sure people would be testing themselves every few days. The rest I am with you on 100%.

The banks are doing the best they can and also the government bodies, but unfortunately for a very good lot of companies the losses are so out of control that they are beyond salvation. Snowball effect at full pace.

This is either going to turn out to be just needless panic, or the threat is extremely serious and the whole world will suffer.

The worst will be for countries like mine, which can barely cope with the normal issues - our economy would be crushed if the panic continues.

My family is in the trade business and we already suffer so much due to external factors, this is going to absolutely annihilate us. I also fear if it doesn't settle quickly, it may cause major conflicts in different regions and countries may decide to completely shut down the boarders.

But whether there can be a kit designed to give you a result within your home negating the need to send it off? Like a Covid-19 pregnancy test thing?

I realise these things takes months to develop and is unrealistic, but just a thought for future pandemics (if we have a future)

I wish. My hit rate is 47% which is only enough to give some return and pay part of my year vacations. Spiersey pretty much lives from it.

Would be ideal, I still think anyone running a temperature for say 12 hours, easy to find out, should self isolate.

I'm sure it doesn't come as any surprise to anybody, but every single one is effectively about Coronavirus (the Intu one is related).

Totally agree. The Brexit "damage" will be a controlled damage, because you can actually agree to make phase payments at low or null interest. This is causing the whole tourism industry starting to collapse, people will consume less goods from shops, restaurants, bakeries, etc, which mean suppliers will also be selling much less.
Not to mention that exports and imports are halted and other markets like shoes, clothes, etc are also extremely affected.

The only winners on this are business like Tesco's who will oversell products that in a regular year would be wasted due to having no interest and big pharmas who are preying on people panic (latex gloves price raised 30% during the crisis, and surgical masks cost 3 times more).

They are taking their time with this cobra meeting aren't they ? Not surprising really due to the British government being the most indecisive pricks in the world.

So just working out the end game (again), the aim is to get everyone infected (because that's inevitable) but in a controlled and staggered manner so the medical services can look after those at risk (not the majority of us) in an optimum capacity? So I'm working from home because it's simply not my turn yet, but it will be. The virus itself is not going anywhere as it's got a mofo survival strategy. Like flu but it's not flu.

So I'm guessing, with four school and uni going kids in London, I'll be done in the next few weeks/months. After the first bout, subsequent reinfections will have lessened impact. I live with my elderly (67 year old) mother at home and for her the hope is she fights it herself and/or the aforementioned medical services are in a well managed state if it comes to that. I'm still hoping for summer weather assistance.
