SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

Where have we heard that kind of reaction before? And look where we are now? But you keep on keeping on, chief. Not like people are dying over this or anything. As long as you get your after eight and prawn cocktail around grannys dinner table...for what might be the last time.

Sure pal

Sounds like you are wasted on here perhaps you should be making those decisions instead, you obviously know a lot better.
You see this said a lot, despite how utterly ridiculous it is. People are allowed to criticise our Governments mishandling of the pandemic without offering themselves as an alternative to the prime minister.

Something has changed in the last few days and spooked the government though. No way does Boris get up in the House of Commons last week to accuse Starmer of ‘wanting to cancel Christmas’ unless he was pretty damn sure he wouldn’t be forced to cancel Christmas.

I expect every other government in Europe apart from this one very publicly cancelling Christmas didnt help. Neither did realising the Oxford vaccine trial went wrong and the country will likely have to pause its vaccinations for 1 or 2 months in the New Year because there arent enough doses.

I dont think he will call another meeting before next week on the 30th like he said.

But he is definitely announcing lockdown on the 30th.

I guess you missed Antonio Costa "preserving the Christmas spirit" by making relaxations on Christmas, while simultaneously announcing the need for more severe restrictions by New Year's, as did multiple other countries on the continent and elsewhere.

The Oxford vaccine trial went wrong? I thought it was about to be approved for use?

It might be for the last time for many older people, yes

Exactly. Everyone so upset about their ‘ruined Christmas’ simply because they can’t have big family gatherings should spare a thought for those who couldn’t anyway through losing loved ones.
Personally I don't think it's that. I think people are quite rightly annoyed at how the government has dealt with this from start to finish.

They got the dosing wrong by accident, and the more effective dose had no data for over 55s. The FDA wont issue approval until February at the very earliest and the EU has gone quiet on it. I'm sure the UK will approve it asap, because they have to.

My point is that of course the government have handled this dreadfully. They should have had the balls to say from the off that Christmas should have been held under restrictions.

My family have all prepared for Christmas in this way, lots of people actually took the government’s 5 day relaxation and ran with it. Just because you can, doesn’t always mean you should. Now the uproar.

Don't see the point in having harsh restrictions on Christmas. Might as well have kept it as is and then brought in a lockdown after boxing day like the rest of the UK.

Enough people will flout the lockdown rules over Christmas and New Years to ensure January will be the worst month yet statistically, without a full on lockdown.

I'm expecting the worst month and a full lockdown

Your last 2 words are the most important. Full lockdown.
People use the word lockdown as if it means anything. The last one was nothing of the sort.
Nothing changed and as a result, it achieved zero. Quite unlike the first one which certainly had a beneficial effect. But it was lifted far too quickly.

Speculation is that we’ll be having mass vaccinations in early January either way.

What a load of crap. Wife is traveling alone to see her very ill mother abroad (not Covid) on Monday. Had to get the ridiculously expensive fit to fly certificate for nearly £200. The tickets themselves are nearly £800 and strictly non refundable.

Where do we go to get exceptional circumstances permission? It's a shambles. We're just going to turn up at Heathrow airport and hope Qatar Airways let her through.

Must be a new strain if it's spreading fast through all those affluent like minded areas with huge homes in the south east.

Quite stark for south and south east to be in Tier 4 to say the least after all nonsense said about the north a month ago.

Seriously though cases have exploded down there and in Wales so rules change quickly to reflect that. Germany the country that did well for a long time have had a week of 700-850 deaths a day and 30k cases.

Because London gets away with far too much and the Northerners have been paying the price so far. Hell, i wouldn't even be surprised if London's figures have been being massaged over the last few months to avoid facing tier 3.

Do you still think London's numbers are being massaged?

Thanks!

Your dad tested positive but has no symptoms so far? That's strange, isn't it?
Yeah, he's got a bit of a sore throat today apparently but I don't think that's a listed symptom. The only reason he had the test was because it was a requirement before going into hospital for the operation. Maybe it's a false reading or something I don't know.

Top local authorities, I've never seen any number as high as Thurrock's.

Damn, totally forgot this gem.

Very much mixed feelings. It's a clusterfeck. We should never have been in this mess. There are so many points it could've been avoided by governments across the UK. It's the right decision based on the awful place we find ourselves in right now though.

We were all so innocent way back when.

I was joking on page 1 of this thread because I was sat in a departure lounge ready to fly to Taiwan when this thread was created. Taiwan was a hot spot back then. How times have changed!
I also remember a mate in China asking me to sign a passport application for him after he destroyed his own so he could escape back to the U.K where it was safe.
How times change indeed

A friend of mine just sent me a photo from inside the Westfield shopping centre, in London. Throngs of people. Loads without masks. Is that normal in the UK?!

In Ireland you could go days without seeing a single maskless person in an indoor space. I know the benefits of masks are kind of uncertain but to me it’s a marker of general civic spiritedness during the pandemic. If they can’t be bothered wearing a mask in a shopping centre then chances are you’re taking the piss in other ways too.

All very well moaning about Boris and the gang but that photo really shocked me. Looks like the British public need to up their fecking game or reap the consequences.
