SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

Pretty sketchy. An Imgur link with what appears to be a photograph of something written on paper with an overlay of somebody commenting on it presumably during a YouTube video.

That's just a screenshot I took from this dude I follow frequently.

Jamaica (where I'm from) just confirmed our first covid 19 patient. Traveler from UK. Came here on the 4th and was eventually quarantined

The number of new cases in Italy is down by half compared from yesterday. No idea if it is artificially low, or the peak has passed. Hopefully, we see the trend continuing.

Thanks for this. Those numbers do somewhat show that we might have this under control at the moment.

Well we could hit a tipping point soon just that we're not a few days or a week behind Italy yet. We have a good amount tested compared to Italy's grave situation of a week ago but they should've done way more.

I think we don't have it under control necessarily, but we're separated from the mainland and we might escape the worst.

Maybe someone addressed this already but I'm thinking my biggest worry is this thing spreading like crazy and mutating into something more deadly.

Their capacity to test enough people must be pretty stretched by now, but I'll take any good news. Our idiots need to get there shit together, and act like are doing right now.

Still in two thoughts whether to continue with my new York trip on Thursday. Its a 4 day trip and London is bad enough anyway, so I wonder if it makes much difference.

But new York state has quite a few cases and I feel in Manhattan can spread like wildfire.

It could happen. But generally the more deadly it is, the harder it is for the virus to spread widely. At least that's what I'm telling myself.

At a minimum I would talk to your travel insurance provider to check what you are covered for - I mean, literally pick up the phone to them, and then get it in writing. You don't want a huge US medical bill if things go south.

It's already spreading like crazy and - paradoxically - if it got much more deadly it might not spread so rapidly.

Right now it's almost the perfect combination of leaving most people well enough to infect loads of other people without realising they have a serious illness, while still being deadly enough to cause an enormous death toll if large swathes of the population get infected. At this stage, I'm thinking that any kind of mutation can only be a good thing.

Presumably because more dangerous strains kill before they can spread as effectively?

the understanding is it’s pretty hard for these viruses to mutate something to do with there being a safe measure in the virus that corrects its genetic code if it mutates.

something like that in a scientific report

While true, my concern is that it gets the opportunity to do so. It can also become more infectious while getting deadlier, too.

So it's not like playing Pandemic, then? Phew.

Well, the quicker it gets deadly I guess. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, HIV has a long incubation period with mild-ish symptoms and then eventually turns deadly. Obviously, hoping this is nothing like that.

Yeah, and I don't want to pass anything on here.

I got the tickets via travel up so its non refundable non changeable rubbish.

Could be that, could be that the quarantines set a week or two ago are showing their results. Let's hope!

Off work today with a bad chest after having a fever and aches yesterday. I’m asthmatic. 2 other colleagues have also not turned in today, we work in Liverpool and live just outside.

Looks like none of us have any intention of getting tested, wouldn’t even know where to start, just lying in bed drinking lemsips and reading this thread. :nervous::lol:
Part of the problem right here. You need to get tested for the sake of the people you come in contact with.

What if one of your work colleagues has an elderly relative who dies? Will you still be using emojis to explain that to them when you get back to work?

They will need to reopen most of the city hospital which isn't being used. Of course, it would probably cost a few million just to clean the unused corridors.

Yeah but where are they going to get the nurses from? You cant open beds without nurses to work there - we don't have enough nurses as it is.

What's the score with people in Italy who don't live there? Are they stuck for a month or are they allowed a window to leave?

Also are the supermarkets still open?

With a British passport we are free to leave. How we leave I'm not sure now all the flights are cancelled.

Supermarkets, pharmacies are open as normal and apparently that won't change even if they close all other shops.

Feeling pretty hot, dizzy, and tight chest.

I get colds a lot, so nothing terribly out of the ordinary.

Far as I can tell, given I haven't been to any of the high risk parts of the world, or had direct contact with any known cases, the advice is for me to just carry on as I normally would, rather than ringing 111 or anything?

That's not the current recommendations. Testing only advised in people who have recently travelled back from a high risk region or been in close contact with someone who travelled from a high risk region.

No wonder its spreading...

How do you know if you've been in contact with someone who has travelled to a high risk region?

Fair enough, I heard that Aaron Ramsey may not be able to play the next set of internationals which got me thinking.

Atleast that's something then, which begs the question why all this bulk buying from people? Fair enough a few more tins than usual just incase of the absolute extreme but in bulk is too much, I bumped into a old man the other day who was seriously distressed because he had to go into three supermarkets to find what he usually gets in one.

That's been reported in Spain today, not sure about elsewhere; if you look at El Pais, they have diagrams and shit showing how and why they (the Chinese researchers) arrived at the numbers.
It's based on some research coming out of (surprise surprise) China. Summed up in this newspaper article.

Slightly strangely, the authors of the original peer-reviewed article have since retracted their publication.

Thank you both.
Let's hope they retracted it because it was full of holes and not just because they fear the responsibility and magnitude of that and want to be more sure.

Could be that, could be that the quarantines set a week or two ago are showing their results. Let's hope!

Cases in the original 11 quarantine zones have been dropping, but were being offset by massive rises in other areas. The main source of the huge rise in cases was Lombardy, and we have been under a semi-lockdown for a few days now. Maybe it's starting to show results.

The zones definitely do work if done correctly, although i don't think we will see consistent drops for a while yet.

Tests have been steady at around 5k per day.

One of the pitfalls of publishing tonnes of research very quickly out of necessity is that some of it isn't as thorough as it could be. There's a few questionable studies out there from China even if on the whole most of it will save countless lives.

My local team Linfield have suspended training at all levels. One of our players was in contact with someone infected.

We're top of the table, I really hope this won't affect our season at the end of it

On the point about insurance. Make sure you ask about health insurance!!! Anything other potential costs are insignificant compared to what you may be up against if you get sick.

Italy deaths jump from 463 to 631 in a day. 36% increase.
Sadly, it seems there healthcare capacity is already well past saturation.

It is. Your deaths rapidly rise when you run out of ICU beds and respirators. And Italy has double the per capita capacity of intensive care beds of the UK, according to NHS professionals. When the tsunami inevitably hits the NHS, it will be an absolute catastrophe. I sincerely hope I’m wrong but can’t see how.

The government is being complacent for fear of spreading panic. It’s disgraceful. They need to get their shit together. Better close schools, interrupt sporting and social events and make office workers work from home now. Better delay the spread before NHS hits capacity. After that it will be too late.

The government is being complacent for fear of spreading panic.
I don't even think it's that - they're afraid of the political costs/public backlash, and costs to business.
It's typical of these corrupt clowns to cover up a pandemic.

Like most other country's plans for this kind of event. Call on retired doctors and nurses to come back out to play.

You really do have to question the media throughout all of this. The BBC seem to be deliberately trying to create panic every day. Breaking news every time it goes up a minimal amount every day. Deliberately finding pictures of 2-3 people wearing masks in a public place. Finding supermarkets where the shelves are empty. Today’s headline was how “Italy struggle to deal with coronavirus” then when I read the article it just said the measures they’ve taken to contain it. Nothing about how they aren’t working. Nothing about the way China and Singapore have managed to contain it. No context as to how low the numbers are.

Makes you wonder what we would be like facing an actual emergency where everybody’s life is at danger.

They are botching this, Boris and co. And we can't do a damn thing about it, for five years.

I actually think this is one of the rare cases where the media reaction is actually slightly underplaying the risks and what's at stake here. It could be devastation on a scale most of us haven't seen in our lifetimes. The whole nation of Italy - ITALY - is effectively under martial law, and it's only just getting started.

But people aren't taking the media at face value given they are the boy who cried wolf.
