SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

Hmm, let's take a look at the death rates..

80+ years old
14.8%
70-79 years old
8.0%
60-69 years old
3.6%

Now let's take a look at the UK population in those age ranges..

80+ years old
2,592,693
70-79 years old
3,956,219
60-69 years old
6,051,323

So that would suggest a rough death rate of..

80+ years old
383,718
70-79 years old
316,497
60-69 years old
217,847

Now I think letting 918,062 UK citizens die might be pushing it a bit even for a Tory..
That got me interested in ours...

It would translate to around
1.6 million dead 80+
1.3 million dead 70-79
1.0 million dead 60-69

Well, it’s clear now that this is the big one we’d been fearing. Good luck everyone. Feel for Italy right now.

Thanks the Lord! Why oh why this was not done one or two weeks ago? Why the feck they were expecting, that suddenly the pasta would become a poison to the virus?

Why the other countries are not doing the same, when clear as day they will do so in 2-3 weeks?

It's not a complete 'stay at home and don't go anywhere' lockdown, seems to be a 'no public gatherings or needless social trips' thing.

We NEED that everywhere.

If that's true, how is anybody going to head out for food and supplies? How are visitors going to make their daily visits to frail elderly?

It can't be as much of a blanket ban as that tweet implies, but as yet I can't see anything on the BBC.

Edit: found it.

It's just a ban on any kind of large gatherings. BBC article.

Why the feck we don't have that here already is beyond me.
This is what I'm thinking, if people can travel to work on the bus or train which is an enclosed space then why couldn't they go to the supermarket. From what I saw of China I think they had deliveries or you could collect your shopping but you could still go to the supermarket with protection.

Typical Italian half-arsed measures. The entire world should do a China! We can survive one month without toilet paper.

UK government or the US aren't interested in invoking anything like this anytime soon. At least for another week or so when realisation sets in that we're in the absolute shitter.

I'm so fecking nervous right now.

I live on an island, Azores is an autonomous region part of Portugal.

Our local health authorities are asking quarantined students in continental Portugal not to return. This may soon include two of my brothers. I was trying to convince them to return all day before this notice right now.

In the meanwhile one of their Universities has just suspended every class and activity.

I struggle to think if this request becomes an enforced order, and more widespread, and if they will have to spend weeks or months away from the rest of the family. At a time like this I fear for their mental well being.

I know people love sensationalism, but can we just get the facts straight, no movement, 'other than for work and emergencies', which will still mean plenty of people moving about, and I assume people will still be allowed out to buy food, etc.

I'm in one of the current lockdown areas, and it's not what i would call a true lockdown. Businesses are being forced to allow employees to work from home, restaurant and bars have to close at 6pm, and anywhere where large numbers of people could gather are closed - shopping centres, stadiums, cinemas etc.

You can still move around freely from what i've seen today but virtually everything is closed and the streets are empty.

Casual Chinese workers in reasonable numbers at their epicentre apparently.
Hence my "randomness". Had this virus originated in India and the UK could be Italy right now.

Good job I postponed my flight to Italy. Hopefully Ryanair give me a refund now!
They might be broke or nationalized or whatever in a couple of weeks from now.

Who knows, the way things are going so crazy.

The decree provides for banning all public events, closing cinemas, theatres, gyms, discos and pubs, funerals, weddings and all sport events, including Serie A matches. All schools and universities will remain close until 3 April

Supermarket doesn't seem to feature in the list.

Yes. Supermarkets are open as normal. There are signs saying to keep 1 metre apart but that's all.

I suppose if you had good ventilation in the shops, i mean really good, it would help reduce the chances of catching the virus.

If it happens where i am in ireland, i have stocked up. So i would not need to go to the shop for about two weeks. After that though i would.

Will the people in italy still be able to go to the shops for food?
Yes. Supermarkets will have to control the number of customers though, which likely will end up in long queues

Some like esselunga are offering free delivery services, too

With Italy suspending the football for an entire month (it is likely gonna be longer in the end), we can expect the other countries to do the same soon.

We always said it as a joke, but could it be that Liverpool actually won't win the EPL in the end?!

There will be a run on the shops though. People buying three times what they need, unless the shops themselves prevent this from happening.

I’d say they need to win it mathematically in the next two weeks to be sure. Also, if any PL player contracts the virus, then it could be over straight away.

All of ye - read the BBC article!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-51810673

- No travel other than to work or for emergencies.

Therefore: No socialising. No bars. No sport. No school. No university. No beach trips. No picnics. No vacations. No parties. No going out for a jog.

Just work, emergencies, and presumably shopping.

Thanks. But there will more than likely be a run on the shops.

Whats more interesting is how would this play out for European matches etc.

If the likes of Juve and Inter cannot play, how does the competition continue

So my wife treated a patient about 10 days ago that had been in Beijing a week prior.

She now has come down with symptoms of a fever, runny nose, cough with phlegm, and mild respiratory trouble.

Yay

I don't think that's out of the question. Who is going to fly anywhere?
I am supposed to go to US for what would be my first real holidays in 3 years in early May... hope we get this under control by then. If it was tomorrow I’d still travel.

The season will keep going just long enough to confirm them as champions. These sorts of things always end in tragedy.
