I knew this thread would be bumped as soon as I saw him on the bench

Just what his thread in the transfer forum needed to fuel the fire. Now, the fire rises...

We need several players. At least three have top be top class - bearing in mind, currently only our GK fits that profile - a couple can be "good" (Mane).

I'm gonna laugh my ass off if we buy him for a massive fee, he has a few couple of games and then gets philosophied and people are gonna call him average.

Van Gaal has already purchased some philosophy books, they are ready for Mané when he comes.

Out of interest, who do you think in our team exactly is being shackled by LVG?

I personally don't buy the idea that any of our attackers are underperforming due to LVG. They are simply not good players. Its not LVGs will that Mata is slow or Depay can't beat a man.

I think LVG coaches the attacking instincts out of them and it results in them playing his slow dull shitty football

I think our players in general look hesitant to take risks. I get it, it's van Gaal's way to minimize errors and you mostly do that by minimizing the risk you take. For plenty of our players, that's not the best way to go though.

I disagree. The majority of our attack: Mata, Depay, Rooney, are just not good enough at all. Young is not Neymar, as he says.

He coached Depay for years with the national side before buying him therefore he has to take some responsibility for how poor Depay has been.

The difference between Barcelona's attack and ours these days leaves a lot of room. While we'll never be near Barcelona with this group (and to be fair, no team in the world is as good up front as Barcelona), we could still perform much better. As you could see today Mata was a much better player in the second half when players were active, making runs and taking risks. He lives off of it.

Young did well today and was a terror on the wing. Depay is highly inconsistent. Prior to his poor stretch in the past couple of games, he's had some very promising cameos off the bench. Martial is an absolute monster and Herrera is a good player up front as well. The big key, of course, in today's game was Rooney being solid and thus being a small positive rather than a large negative up front.

Probably the best we can do in January but I'm not convinced yet that he's the one to improve us massively

Just saw Koeman being interviewed about Mane. He ripped into him for being unprofessional.

Read between the lines, and I'd say it is very likely we have came in for him and he is kicking up a fuss to push it through.

Very unlikely I'd say.If he turned up late and was disciplined then that's that.He has to roll his sleeves up and get on with it

Fair points. I am more concerned about a gulf between Spurs attack and ours, than Barca. They are the super club and the have more talent in their B team than we have in our first. So not comparable.

Southampton supporters trust chairman says this about him.

Koeman -

What? National team coaches get very little time with the players so I'm not sure how is van Gaal to blame.

Yeah we need his pace, power and ability on one v ones in the final third. Hopefully the Felipe Anderson speculation is a smokescreen.

Im not just saying this because it seems were getting Mane and Morgan for the price of Sterling but I really admire the way Southampton do business.
There are no ridiculous fee being asked ala Stones or Lukaku and in this day and age where money is becoming less and less important because since so many sides now have it, it's a really admirable way to conduct themselves.
Play well for us and we won't hold you back if a top club comes along, really stops all the horse shit and drama the modern player brings with him.

We should look to get a more gifted wide player in the summer (as well as ST, CB etc) but as far as January signings go, he'd be great. He's rapid, strong and has decent feet.

That's still more time than most managers get when purchasing players. I accept there is always risk with transfers and it's predominantly Depay's fault that he has struggled so far but Van Gaal is hardly blameless. He clearly went into this season expecting Depay to adapt quickly and become one of our star players; that judgement was horribly wrong.

Southampton will not seek their best player mid season for £24m.

I think there is more to it than meets the eye, if you read comments attributed to Koeman on that you'll see he is questioning Mane's commitment to the club and also talking about a lot of issues like respect, ambition etc. Looking at it closely I wonder how a player can be late for a team meeting, the last one before the game too which means it must have been held at the team hotel which really is inexcusable - you can understand why the manager lost it.

All depends what's going on behind the scenes I would think.

Will the manager now make allowances for him and try to bring him back into the fold - or will he keep him frozen out?

If he really wants to go and there are big offers for him, then now might be the time to cash in and get somebody else in. Or they risk him having a tepid second half of the season and offers in the summer being much less once it's clear he wants away.

If players are unhappy they usually get their way.

Southampton have to be realistic with these lads, of course they are entitled to be annoyed by the whole transfer issues, but how can they deny a lad the chance of playing for one of the top clubs in the world.

Right now - you're not...

Christ, are City in for him too?

Mane forced his way out of Salzburg by simply not turning up for training for a few days, so Saints definitely knew what kind of player they got. Immensely talented yes, but also with major issues off-field. I'm not surprised he's kicking up a fuss at the first opportunity and I think they will sell rather sooner than later - but more likely in the summer.

He's in a sulk now, I'd imagine we'll get him this window, they'll probably want to get rid.

have we even been linked with this fella this window?

LVG also said Depay would take a year to adapt. The fans are the ones who expected him to be a world class game changer from the start.

To be fair, LVG didn't bring in any replacements for ADM, and by default Memphis was competing with a small list of players for a starting spot.
