Not entirely true. We often have non-compete clauses…though they were mostly just wiped out by law. Sport wise, you would be correct.
Non-compete has nothing to do with your period of notice. A notice period prevents you from being sacked (or leaving) on the spot.
 
At the yesterday's conference I felt that he is really torn up about accepting the move to Man Utd... Maybe it's just about being difficult and emotional to leave Sporting, his project and fans... Or maybe he really hasn't decided if he should move. Of course, it might be just because he's in negotiations, and you don't talk like it's a done deal before that.

Personally, I think he could be successful in Man Utd, but he will find a club and player culture that will take time and patience to change, and I don't know if that will be really given to him. Specially being a young manager with no curriculum in the big leagues. One thing is sure: he and his team are really professional, they prepare every aspect of the game: players physical and mental well being, a strong group mentality, the study of the adversaries and teaching each player what's his role, bringing out the best of each player, etc. It's not about Amorim only, but his highly professional team.

He complains a bit about having matches every 3 days, how that limits the tactical work and it's more about recovering the players for the next match. The good thing about Sporting now is that the players have been together for some time, they know their roles and what he expects from each of them. New players can integrate better when everyone else knows their role and the team's dynamics. Amorim will have to start from scratch and that will take time and probably some bad results at the beginning. I'm just doubtful that he will have the support he had in Sporting, from the bosses and from the fans.

He joined Sporting in March 2020, so much later than now and with the club in shambles. Got 5 victories, 3 draws and 2 defeats (the defeats with the other two big clubs of the portuguese league). Next season, his first full one with pre-season and everything, ended up by winning a title that eluded Sporting for 19 years.
He'll get a lot of time from the management guys at United because he's their first appointment. Also from a financial standpoint a big deal has been made about how we had to be careful with Ten Hag due to being close to PSR regulations so we probably couldn't afford to sack him until 18 months / 2 years in anyway.

Given the shambles so far this season he's basically got a free pass until next season and given there is still 3/4s of this season to go he'll have a much better idea of what he needs by the summer transfer window.

Also the fans will always give the manager time, the match going fans never turned on ETH despite being responsible for our 2 worst ever PL starts and our terrible record in Europe.

The only ones that might not give him time are the players and they are the only ones you didn't mention :lol:

I think you're misinformed. RA had a lot to say about the transfers, if he didn't want a player the player didn't come, if he wanted player X then it was player X until he said that it's time to move on for player Y. RA and Hugo Viana were 2 hands on one stomach. Hugo Viana understood that it wasn't a good thing to get a player that the coach doesn't want. At my other club I saw last year what it is if your technical director and the coach don't have the same view on players.

In one of his recent press conferences he said, that he had stability at Sporting and that he was heared for every decision surrounding the first team and probably no other coach in Portugal had that.

I think Ruud will take the Chelsea game then Amorim will rock up on the Mon or Tue. His demeanour last night implied it wasn't his last game.
Just in time for a much easier fixture list (on paper) which will hopefully see better results and avoid immediate media/social media pressure.

and Jose when he was at Chelsea, you need to solid athletic DMs for it to work.

It is not really. You must look from employers view. You have manager (not talking just about football now) who is in charge for ton of important things and if he is leaving you would expect that he makes transition easier. Delegate some of his current business, informs you about some things, finish some (important) things which he started etc....

Without notice period he can leave same day and leave your business in complete mess.

Yes definitely, this is the most important trait he needs to have.

Constantly calling out referees, getting himself huge fines and touchline bans. I can practically smell our next premier league title.
 
Think it somewhat makes sense. You don't want him to stay for months, but not just leaving on the spot seems reasonable. You need someone to step in, organise training, possibly the next lineup and so on
You don't want a manager working with the team who has little to no interest in how the next couple of games go for the team you're forcing him to stay and manage. You're better off putting an interim in.

I'd seen quite a few Sporting fans say that on various social media but I'm happy to be corrected if that's not the case.
 
If it doesn't work out, club shouldn't hesitate to sack him as well. Every manager stays at United 6 months too long. Ten Hag perhaps even stayed 12-13 months too long, though Fa Cup win was enjoyable.

This reminds me a bit of when Chelsea sacked Mourinho in 2016. We were in 16th in the table and the very next game was at home vs Sunderland. Before the game, Mourinho stans were saying 'let's see, if we continue losing, then it's proof Mourinho was working with a bunch of duds who have no business being at Chelsea, but they were also saying if they play well and win then it's proof they all downed tools.

Either scenario conveniently absolved Mourinho. We put in a brilliant performance and comfortably beat Sunderland 3-1 and of course the prevailing narrative from that season was the players downed tools.

Playing three at the back Amorim style actually solves a few issues for us; our dearth of fit left backs can be countered by rotating in wingers. Our lack of midfielders is mitigated by needing only two out and out midfielders.

Amorim is stylistically close enough to Ten Hag to make the succession a good fit. He is inheriting a better squad than 10Hag, so will need less time in my opinion.

Not third world - I think the poster exaggerated for the sake of illustration - but compared to other wealthy countries some parts of Britain are terribly close. That’s what extreme inequality and privatization give you.

In Portugal normally the coaches of the big 3 - the other teams I don't know - , talk to the press the day before the game, a flash after the game for the TV station who broadcasted the game and after the game in the stadion.

I am not sure if I will classify current squad as strong.

Arsenal had an arguably stronger squad before Arteta bought any player into the club.

Not strong enough to win the PL, but we actually have a strong squad that should be in the top four right now. Our glaring weakness in terms of the squad is the absence of a goal scorer — which is a strange thing for a club like United to be bereft of. You could add to that no LB when Shaw is out, which means no LB at all, as I don’t rate Malacia as anything more than emergency cover when he is fit.

Don't disagree with your post -- the initial report feels like a fluff piece to make INEOS look like they knew what they were doing, but the slight semantic is that they simply activated the +1 in his contract rather than putting him on a new contract. It felt like the most basic show of support they could do in that regard.

It did feel like they supported him in the other ways you mentioned.

Yes but that release clause has a 2.5 week notice period and one article I read said it could be up to a month but wasn’t clear why. So to get him immediately or asap they are negotiating a fee

Agreed - you take the fine by calling someone out but start the idea of a biased ref/a certain team getting favourable decisions and the refs, who are human, then start to try and prove that is not the case.

We fired Ten Hag and put Ruud in right away, I'm sure no one came into work in the morning thinking that would happen. We wouldn't have dreamed of firing Ten Hag and then telling him to work 30 days notice so we can find a replacement. Same goes for any departure. Once they're gone, they're gone. You don't want them hanging around the place talking to other people about where they're going. At the point he signs the contract he's an employee of someone else. Why would Sporting want a Manchester United employee in their changing rooms speaking to their staff and players? It's a massive distraction and a tapping up risk.
