Ruben Amorim | United meet Sporting release clause

He even branded himself as a hard disciplinarian. He was very inconsistent in applying it and some players seemed to have a longer leash but he was definitely trying to come across as one.

I don’t actually know whether he’s lost the dressing room or not, or how players felt. I’m not going to try to debate that as I have zero knowledge.

How was he very inconsistent in applying it?

Interesting on Welbeck. I've always like him but his age, lack of a prolific record and sketchy injury record (although it's been okay over the last couple of years) makes him a bit of an odd target to have. He's started the season very well but that isn't the norm for him. You can't look back and think if only we had Welbeck just cause he's got 6 in 9 so far this season for Brighton.

I wonder if the posters wetting themselves over Amorin were also the ones wetting themselves over ETH being appointed.. and probably the first to start the latest manager out thread. Then shout ever louder about sack and bring in the next lamb to the slaughter.

Amorin has done very well at Sporting. Can he cut it at a huge club with huge pressure in the premier league? Impossible to say but I won’t be getting too excited too quickly. Judge him at the end of the season assuming he’s the next chosen one. He’s a gamble.

The club imo screwed up, (again) Touchel was there for there for the taking in summer.
I would have preferred Tuchel over Amorim too but there would be question marks over any new manager we get except for Pep. I don't think anyone is certain of success but at least we have a better chance now with ETH gone.

They’d won two league titles in 50 years prior to his arrival and zero CL’s. They were not dominant under Mancini or Pellegrini, just in the mix.
Two in 50 while true is a bit misguiding. They won 2 titles in 4 years before Pep went there. They won’t be as dominant without Pep, of course, but they will continue being one of the top clubs in Europe.

How do you not understand that everyone is a gamble especially seeing how it went with ethl?

Liking the fact many people are saying he's great at building team spirit and atmosphere in the locker room. It was one of my biggest gripes with ten Hag, his 'hard disciplinarian' demeanor was extremely was pure nonsense.
I agree. In my view, his English was only good rather than excellent.

His interviews were sometimes a little frustrating to listen to as he seemingly struggled to articulate what he was thinking or feeling at times. With English not being the first language of most of the players, I can't imagine that they found it any easier.

I think this level of communication can be effective in giving facts and delivering instructions, but will come up short when trying to express more emotional and inspirational messages needed to really motivate and impassion the players.

Tuchel is more of a known gamble. His ceiling is already known to me, I couldn’t pretend to be excited for him. The England job suits him much better. Going for a young up and coming manager is a gamble, but he can grow with this changing club. It’s an ideally timed appointment overall with INEOS just coming in.

No wonder we struggled badly under Fergie with his scottish dialect.

£5m for his staff and extra to release early as Portuguese law means they have to give 30 days notice once a clause has been paid.

Sorry if already answered...What happened between him and West Ham? Did they reject him in the summer?

It is. I don't get how irrationally jumpy people can be. Just think things through logically.

Well logic would tell me that after paying the release clause this was done obviously

It’s just the press conference was a bit flat, he said he’s taking training today and didn’t even say bye to the fans at last nights final whistle.

Not sure what I was expecting but just seemed like he hadn’t 100% made his mind up

It’s not guaranteed he’s coming.
All we know for sure is what the official and personal statements say.
An approach has been made to Sporting, with an offer for compensation and Amorim has been offered the job, with a contract to be negotiated.
We don’t know if Utd and Sporting have even started negotiating a deal, based on our offer?
On the other hand, it could be close to finalisation, with an announcement coming in the next day or two.
He could still turn us down and stay, rather than take on this poisoned chalice.
Whatever, all the speculation has now become pointless until we know one way or the other.
So many words yet you said absolutely nothing

This whole place is pointless with this attitude? “Stop discussing things”?

I think we will see in the performances next couple of weeks if he lost the dressing room or not. Are they really that shit or didn’t they give everything.

So nothing to do with EtH?

If they play well then they didn't give everything. If they don't play well then they are shit.

0 responsibilities on manager.

Moving from Ajax 2.0 to Sporting 2.0 might not be the best strategy.
I completely agree as the difference in quality for the Dutch and Portuguese league to the Premier League is massive but Inacio and Hjmuland walk into our starting eleven whilst I’d take Diomande, Edwards and Gyokeres over Lindelof, Antony and Zirkzee.

We've literally agreed their buy out clause.

It shouldn’t be ignored that generally Dutch managers have faired a hell of a lot worse in the PL than Portuguese managers. The transition between the two leagues seems quite a lot better coming from Portugal.

Having a thick accent/dialect is very different to not having the words to express yourself.

It’s just a funny claim, don’t really understand the need to make things up just to come up with more negativity. We have assistants that do translations, same as we had under Ferguson..It’s not like there’s few interviews where ex players laugh about how they understood feck all coming from Fergie, especially when he was mad.

I don't think he completely lost the dressing room but a section of players definitely weren't convinced by him and he was never really able to inspire the team to give 100%, likely as a consequence.

It wouldn’t surprise me, level in Portugal is generally higher, but then again i suppose that Jose Mourinho is the only real success story so far?

I don’t think he lost the dressing room but they definitely had no idea what they were doing. The capitulation every time we had a lead showed that. We will obviously see a different approach which may make us look like a different team.

Amorim's work at Sporting has always been very coherent and based on strong ideas. The playing model has always been based on 3 central defenders and 2 offensive wing-backs. Even when losing, he doesn't dispense the 3 central defenders. However, within the same tactic, he manages to explore some variants, as a result of a squad that he has been building over time, which allows him a lot of versatility. He likes short squads but made up of players who play 2 or 3 positions. He doesn't want long squads, with unhappy players who don't play.

The key moment when Sporting's level of play took a big leap was with the signing of Gyokeres. Everything changed with Gyokeres. I don't know how he would do in England, but for the level of the Portuguese league, he is a complete monster.Curiously, the signing of Gyokeres only happened after a bad season for Sporting, in which we had to play the whole year with a striker without the profile to play alone up front (Paulinho) and only under tremendous pressure, Amorim allowed the club to go to the market to sign a suitable striker.

Here we saw two things, because he believes so much in his ideas, Amorim becomes extremely stubborn and on the other hand, the Sporting board let Amorim fail, gave him the necessary stability, never doubted his abilities.

Cheers!

I think he will learn after a season that with the intensity both on and off the field, he will recognise the need or utilisation for a larger squad -- especially considering the expectations of a club like United.

The other learning curve that he will need to undertake will be the exposure to the variety of managers (all with massive budgets; even Ipswich's budget will dwarf that of any of the top three Portuguese clubs ) --- and the resources to implement their respective footballing philosophies.

How much that will affect his more dogmatic approach will certainly be tested.
