Ruben Amorim | United meet Sporting release clause

Probably already been answered but scanned a few pages and couldn't see it and was hoping someone was kind enough to repeat who has kept up with the thread, West Ham decided not to hire him after an interview and Liverpool turned down the chance to speak with him, is that a concern or were there mitigating circumstances?

He was Liverpool's 2nd choice after Xabi Alonso and he agreed to takeover but the move fell through over Sportings compensation demands, I think the West Ham move fell through because they thought he was going to Liverpool

Well it looks like Amorim's preferred formation includes two attacking players just behind the striker. Zirkzee occupying one of those two positions makes more sense than anything we saw at any stage under Ten Hag.

Okay, that makes sense. We can only hope he can become a valuable system player at the least.

When it’s not an interim appointment, but a major one involving big money, he’ll almost certainly be looking to bring some of his own people in to make it work for him.

The problem is United probably have sizeable contracts with RVN and Rene Hake who were legitimate managers/head coaches at their previous Dutch clubs. In terms of severance packages if it’s a clean slate it could be a massive cost on top of EtH. Per the INEOS approach to cost saving, I can’t see it being a full clean sweep and maybe a select few who come along.
Makes sense, thanks for the reply.

Sounds like we want him in place for the weekend game v Chelsea.

No messing around.

I guess something has been happening behind the scenes for a couple of weeks.

Which only goes to show that INEOS weren't dallying at all, they were succession planning behind the scenes.

Shaw started as LWB against Italy in the Euros final and was excellent
It’s one thing to do it in a short tournament, it’s another to do it a full season with his horrible fitness record. LWB will likely be Amorim’s number 1 target if and when he’s hired.

Sky Sports News predict that Amorim's team could look like this:

Onana
Yoro de Ligt Martinez
Mazraoui Ugarte Bruno Dalot
Amad Rashford
Hojlund
Probably something like:
  • GK - Onana, Altay
  • RCB - Toro, Lindelof
  • CB - De Ligt, Maguire
  • LCB - Martinez, Evans (Shaw can fill)
  • RWB - Dalot, Mazraoui
  • CM (def) - Ugarte, Casemiro
  • CM (playmaker) - Bruno, Mainoo, Eriksen
  • LWB - Shaw, Malacia (Dalot can fill)
  • RW - Garnacho, Amad
  • LW - Rashford, Mount (or Garnacho)
  • CF - Hojlund, Zirkzee
I do think our squad fits a 3-4-3, the main sticking point is Bruno would convert to a CM and the LWB's can't stay fit (but that applies to a 4 at the back formation too). So really it's just Bruno being a 10 and needing to change to a CM which will be interesting to see, but given he's Portuguese and a Sporting legend while also being our captain and best passer, he almost certainly will be tried.

We definitely need a new LB/LWB. Dalot or Maz are not the answer on the left.
100% we do and as I said this would make the links to Alphonso Davies much more credible as he’s about as perfect for a left wing back role as there is, bringing Davies in on a free and bringing Alvaro back from Benfica whilst moving Malacia on then moving Shaw to left sided centre back to be back up for Martinez just all makes so much sense.

How immediate was his impact on sporting?

I do remember them having a very rough year with fans assaulting their training session.

I'm more thinking of next season. If Amorim comes in soon, it's unreasonable to expect our players to adapt to him quickly.
Why would that be unreasonable? We see managers all the time come in and has the players doing different things almost right off the bat. It is nothin unusual or strange.

Most likely. I'm happy about this too. We don't need any false dawns with Ruud having a run of games and Ineos thinking he's the long term solution.

Considering he plays 3 43 and him playing in the Portuguese league, will we likely activate the fenandez clause to bring him back to unites from benfica?

It would make a lot of sense if we need to find a proper left wing back in jan window

Onana
Yoro de Ligt Martinez
Mazraoui Ugarte Bruno Dalot
Amad Garnacho
Hojlund
Ta.

Do you not play with a defensive organiser then? That backline is very clumsy.

Surprised by Bruno and Ugarte, too. Bit worrying even.

And no Mainoo-type?

Great to see the club fast and already have deal in place. i guess ruud is not going to be manager for long.

Wonder if RVN has been told to set up with back 3 tomorrow. Be interesting to see if that would happen.

Another £200m spend needed once he realises he doesn’t have the players to play his 3-4-3? You’ll be needing a pair of proper wingbacks at the very least and having to ship out Bruno who doesn’t fit anywhere in an Amorim system. At least he’s a pragmatist and a reasonable coach so I anticipate results will improve. But there’s more to fix at united than just the coach.

The predictable City brief that they were never interested.

Who would want to join them anyway. A club with asterix in their future. If a manager joins and shit hits the fan it can go very badly very quickly. I think most would rather wait and see.

For me, this is the first time where the Zirkzee signing has made a bit of sense. He's not the only one either.

Have to wonder if this was in the works for a while.

Interesting, because for me, this is the first thing that makes me question the Zirkzee signing

Not excited at all about any coach since it's all been false dawns since SAF retired.

I'll be excited when we get good results consistently and we win a league

We the right wingbacks covered, we just need another left back to cover shaw injury issues

Quite like this, taking into account Mainoo I'd probably say:

Onana
Yoro, de Ligt, Martinez
Maz, Ugarte, Mainoo, Dalot
Bruno, Garnacho
Hojlund

He might not even run with the 3-4-3 initially, imagine he's a top class (REALLY HOPE HE IS) coach able to adapt and get a song out of underperforming players.

I don't suppose he'll have much input for Chelsea given that the week is already progressing and by the time he gets in the game plan will have been set.
Don't know about it's legality but surely he'll be able to give instructions over the phone were he sure he'll end up here by then.

Probably a bad idea to be in charge for the Chelsea game as he'll have had basically 0 training time before the game and Chelsea look quite good this weekend. Would rather not start his tenure off with a morale bruiser.

On that note I'm told that the ASPTT Montpellier doesn't see him as a top candidate either. They don't like the idea of investing in wingbacks.

I'd replace Amad with Mainoo with Bruno drifting to the right. It's difficult to translate Sporting playing style to United with the players that you have. For example we have two very good ball playing and passing CBs in Debast and Inácio and there's no equivalent at United.

He won't have the time at all to do that given he also has a match for Sporting today. One step at a time.

I very much doubt INEOS will be willing to bring back Alvaro Fernandez in January for more than twice the price they let him go for in the summer

My one concern about him is his links to man city, I like to think we are not just after him because he is being linked with man city because whenever we have recruited someone that has been linked to man city it has not ended well for us in recent years - sanchez, maguire, ronaldo

Probably still be the cheapest option out there for what looks like a promising left wing back.
