Most good teams play with 3 at the back on the ball currently in the Prem (3-5-2 or 3-2-5 depending how high your wingers are)

3 at back will never work in EPL.
It’s possible to defend with 3-5-3 but you just can’t have an attacking side with that format.

I hope he changes to 4 at back.
I'd hope 3-5-3 would work, seen as you'd be having a man advantage and all!

But more seriously speaking, Conte and Tuchel both did well in the league with 3 at the back. I'm not really a fan of this 3 at the back formations either - it has a very negative/defensive reputation but I think footballs a little more fluid these days, mostly with an emphasis on high pressing and either possession/fast transition football. Fullbacks stepping into midfield, playing a defensive 4 all consisting of 3-4 CB's anyway etc. are all the hype these days, so I'm open to 3 at the back and seeing how it has adapted to "modern football".

Was gonna say, I know skin care wasn't a big thing in the 70s but bloody hell!

I'm guessing Wilf was the youngest of the lot?
Turns out he was! I thought him and Hilditch were tied at 32 but Wilf was actually 31 at the time.

Went into Sportings Reddit page and it being Portuguese I couldn’t read anything. Someone did post a GIF of a nuclear bomb going off. Going to take that as a win.

Conte won premier with back three, Tuchel won Champions League with back three, Guardiola plays with back three every now and then.

Yeah it cant work..

So what's the Caf's take? Is he ready? Too inexperienced? Is he actually good?

Amorim the dream
that is what we are
gonna win the league
how can we be wrong?
From relegation form
To Champions league
And we rely on each other
ah ah
From one cup to win another
ah ah

Cautiously optimistic I am. He seems to be good on paper, so did Ten Hag.

Its all about if he can adapt, change his style of play if its not working and change it well.

As always, I will back the manager.

People are saying most teams play 3 at the back but are they? Do they play 3 CBs and TWO full backs as wing backs? City doesn't. Not one team from the top 6 does it. They may have a CB playing as a left back or right back sometimes, but they don't put another full back in there in place of a forward.

I'm all for Rashford sitting on the bench but not for Maguire.

Something like: Dalot - De Ligt - Maguire - Martinez - Shaw just makes me want to vomit a little.

Maguire hasn't been given a fair shake at LW

Caf is too scared of 3 at the back. Biggest curse for some United fans; "I wish you to have manager who plays with 3 at the back"

Caf: "noooooooooooooo. Just not that"

Just be going through some of their results and he loves to dominate on possession and chances. I know it’s only the Portuguese league but some games he has as many as 33 attempts. Also a game in the CL against Lille where they won 2-0 they didn’t have a shot in the first halve.

See he’s already being written off by Scholes. Who want Xavi or Zidane!

I honestly can’t recall the last time Scholes said anything either positive or encouraging about Utd.

My favourite player as a kid growing up. Name and number on the back of kits. I can’t stand the miserable fecker as a pundit though.

We should try and sign up for the Portuguese league. Would save us a lot of trouble.

Garnacho as LWB. He’s been playing nuno santos who’s meant to be a forward in that position for sporting.

It's sad how happy I'd be to never hear or see another word from him again. Talks absolute ignorant waffle.

He just wants a world class midfielder. Xavi won’t be good here and zidane won’t want to come here.

He fits in with this fanbase.

Oh he is one miserable sod isn't he? If we got who he wanted he'd find something to moan about.

Shut the feck up Scholes, go on holiday. Somewhere without strong sunshine.

Amorim currently doesn’t play with proper fullbacks, it seems. The two players who play in the wing areas are Nuno Santos and Geny Catamo are both wingers

Funny when you hear suggestions from someone that lasted a few week in management.

The annoying this is they're always right yet they always take a contarian position. I expect Merson will say it's shite too.

I mean they have conceded what 2 goals this season in the league as well. So here is me hoping that he can get us defensively sound.

The one thing I want to see from the next manager is compactness, knowing that when we dont have the ball, we will be hard to break down.

No Catamo and Quenda are closer to wingers than full backs. They are fast and good technically.
They are very offensive, they just have to track back when defending.

Dalot and Shaw could work or he could adapt amad and garnacho to those positions for example.

Not sure how that's going to work here but we'll see. I don't trust any of our wingers to do that job well.

City went on an 8 game winning run back in 2023 playing with 3 at the back. They had Ake, Dias and Akanji back there and absolutely battered Liverpool and Bayern Munich during the run. They also beat Leipzig 7-0 with the formation.

I'm beginning to spot the problem we'd have.
