Ruben Amorim | United meet Sporting release clause

His metrics with Sporting are so absurdly good that i don’t know what to make of the Portuguese league based on that.
Well as far as rating players goes, I prefer the both the Portugese and French leagues for potential transitions to the Prem over many others because both are very fast and physical. So at minimum he'll understand the importance of athleticism/physicality

Seems like we were setting up for bringing a manager like Alonso or Amorim in, based on perceptions of how they'd want to play and the players we then signed in the Summer.

All of the players we bought in would fit nicely in a 5-3-2
Don't entirely disagree but do wonder if it would make our lack of goals even worse

I've thought for a while we'd suit 3 at the back. It would definitely suit Maguire and Martinez. Doubtful whether it would be a long term solution though, I've never been a massive fan.

I disagree. I think they are but it was clear how exposed they were playing in ten Hag's system.
I don't think they're settled enough for us to know that yet. He swapped and changed the backline so much they haven't bedded in so it's hard to say, but right now they are not a unit and need more bodies in there.

Still not a big fan of systems with 3 center backs, but I hope Amorim succeeds here.

He ticks a lot of boxes and I just hope he manages to stamp an identity with the squad and shows clear progression with time.

I like a back 3 and I think United need it to be honest. Our defenders aren't physical enough or good enough in the 1v1's to play 2 at the back, we need the cover.

How does the wing back situation work at Sporting? How do you guys play it out?
Our wingbacks aren't original full backs, they were wingers. I'm talking about Catamo or Quenda and Nuno Santos who are highly technical creative wingers with ability to get forward, dribble and cross the ball adequately. When we play against stronger opposition sometimes he reverts to original full backs like Esgaio or use CB who can play as full back like Matheus Reis for more defensive cohesion.

Has he only ever played 3 at the back?

I've also noticed quite a few people opting for Yoro as the middle centre back, with De Ligt as the RCB. Wouldn't it be best if they swapped?
One of the excuses for Liverpool not appointing him was for playing with 3 at the back. Not sure what truth is in that.

Yeah he did. He does have passing over Maguire but I think Amorim can make him work. Nevertheless our best passing CB by far is Inácio.
Im sure you have been asked 100 times, but what are your thoughts as a Sporting fan? Is Amorim ready? Are you sad to see him go?

It's hit and miss.
But he will ALWAYS take full responsability for the misses. He will own his mistakes.
He can be stubborn at times and keep playing underperforming players that only he believes in, to the despair of the fans. I'd say that's his biggest weakness. It's up to the management to save him from himself (by selling said players).

He is also great at press conferences. He actually speaks openly about football and his choices (sometimes too openly) and doesn't waste too much time on bullshit or stupid mind games. He doesn't waste too much time talking about referring too (which is very rare here in Portugal).
I believe you're talking about Esgaio, if so you are correct.

Agreed about his press conferences and referee talk. Let's see how he does in English.

You earned a like.

Yeah I don't like 3 centre backs at all but will back him either way.

His record is enough that he deserves a go.

We will see. I think Amorim will give him a chance. Just stay away from Inácio though.

I think we have a Inacio type of CB. We need pace and power. Someone like Diomande (but probably better?).

Thanks for the info

The whole player selection part sounds less than ideal though :(

Takes a lot courage to take over an underperforming team fom a Dutch coach who hand picked a lot of these players from the Eredivisie in the middle of the season

I'd say that bodes well, he obviously needs himself.

Only 1 starter came from eredivisie.

We also bought Antony and malacia, both of whom are unlikely to feature much under anybody here

I think he has been the best Sporting manager of my lifetime and I'll be very depressed when he goes.

I'll be happy for United though.

The timing and swiftness of Ten Hag’s exit gave me the impression that we had a clear target. Glad that we seem to be moving with intent. Amorim excites me more than pretty much all the other managers we’ve been linked with

Almiron is just Ten Hag but in Portugesse

Same hype as 2 and a half years ago just different coach

Almiron? He's in the MSL bro!

Such a dumb take. It just as dumb as the England fans saying we must have a forigner this time because an Englishman didn't work last time. Or, we cant have another Dutch manager at MUFC because we had two before and they failed. I think we would take Arne Slot right now if he was offered!

Just because they have a similar background, does that make them identical people or have the same ability?

Judge each candidate on their individual merits.

Go and read up on Amorim and you will find they have very different traits.

From what I've read about Malacia, it's up in the air whether he's likely to feature much anywhere anymore.

If this does happen then I hope he sticks with the style & tactics that have brought him success. If that means 3 at the back then so be it.

The moment ETH talked about not replicating what he did at Ajax at United you knew he was done.

Edit: Fair play to INEOS if they do get this over the line. It’s exactly the kind of appointment we should be going for.

Why have footballing people at all when you can get such fantastic insight on the Caf

He's talking about Esgaio, who is our RB and he's probably right. I don't see any other player. Perhaps Adan, our goalkeeper who was great in the first two years and then become De Gea like error prone in his last years.

Is he ready?
Think so but I'd prefer for him to finish the year and see how he does against City and Arsenal in the CL.

He got exposed against Pep in the first time. But he was young back then and he became more pragmatic after that CL tie. He did well against Arteta and Conte though.

Problem with waiting is that you may lose him.

Why not task him with converting Hojlund into Gyokeres like striker? Let him prove him worth as a coach.
This. If he can make a player out of an average Championship striker then let him work his magic on the existing squad before fawning over his previous players.

You aren't getting Gyokeres. You already have Hojlund and Zirkzee there and you have way more pressing needs. If you were to splash money in Sporting player, I'd buy Quenda our 17 year old wonder kid to replace Dalot. He fits Amorim system like a glove.
