Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

I’m honestly a little bit perplexed by what he’s doing. We’re effectively attacking with two players and it feels like a design choice rather than a consequence of the opposition playing well. I don’t know how he’s expecting us to score nearly enough playing this defensively.

What irritates me is that if we lose today, he’ll shoulder the blame from clueless fans and the media. His first PL game in charge was 25 days ago. 25 days. And I’m seeing a portion of the fan base turn on him already.

These players are so far from the standard that United need. We’ve rewarded mediocrity for a decade now and we now find ourselves with these malignant individuals stealing a living and likely to run out their contracts.
People keep saying this buy I haven't actually seen one fan turn on him

This system requires players that can beat a man in the final third, and other than Amad, no one else is capable. Bruno lacks pace/agility. Hojland can't create for himself. And then there's Dalot. Our creative force.

I need him to try one last experiment and that is swap Bruno and Mainoo’s positions

Shouldn't even be an experiment. I don't like Bruno playing CM but in this formation he is clearly better than Mainoo there. I'm starting to feel like Mainoo needs to have 2 runners around him to work in a midfield (sound similar to someone else?), despite him being pretty 1 dimensional in his dribbling. I'd swap them and see what Mainoo can do as a CAM. I still think it would only make things marginally better.

What I don't really understand is why we went from Amad impressing at RWB and Maz at RCB to one playing as a 10 and the other wider.

It doesn't look like it suits either of them and Yoro has shown very little yet to make me understand why we felt the need to blow Madrid out of the water to get him.

We desperately need a solution to LWB, Dalot should never play there again even if he's the only warm body.

I have never liked the formation but what’s done is done. These players are cooked. It’s a pity but there’s no redeeming this squad.

We really need to play one attacking full back as playing 5 defenders in a team that struggles to score is not the way to go

Dalot is better than malecia so there's that

Mount injury and Rashford being frozen out basically limits our options to just Amad

Doesn't this system rely on confident wingback who willingly take on 1v1 situations able to go inside or outside?

If the don't carry a threat the opposing team doesn't have to maintain a wide back line

I don't think your players are as mediocre as they're portrayed. They've finished 2nd and 3rd within the last five seasons. I honestly think the problem has always been the coaches, for whatever reason haven't been good enough.

Solskjaer lacked tactical acumen
ETH seemed poor at communication and Talent ID
Amorim is new so can't judge too quick but does this system really maximize this current group?
On the last point — probably not, but do we want to maximise the current group and scrape a top 5 and then underwhelm in Europe, or do we want to try and place with a discernible brand of football?

I think these players arent as bad as anyone says, agreed. Pound for pound I still think we’re in that “battling for a European spot” in terms of player quality. I just think we’ve managed to clump together a bunch of players whose strengths don’t complement each other. The player profiling has been all wrong.

Coaches have been an issue to a degree, but the players are not without blame. The footballing IQ of a lot of these guys is just not where it needs to be.

I don’t think Amorim’s system is maximising the potential of these players because this is not the squad he would build therefore it won’t work 100%. INEOS and we knew Amorim only works this system - it’s what he knows best. If he was to deviate from this he’s fallen into the trap so many of his predecessors have.

It’s time that we change that. Too many people want the best of both worlds - us to perform well whilst completely changing to mentality and approach of the club. That won’t happen.

We’re in for some shit times before any glimmer of continued improvement. It’s high time people accept that.

All this said, what can you actually do when your club captain who knows he's on a yellow comes out for the second half and does that?

I've said from day 1, you cant play a formation that doesnt suit your squad. Its a results business. No decent player is going to touch us in January based on our form and league position. If we had been pragmatic and picked up some points it would be easier to get them in. Then change when you have the players.

Dunno, we are showing some glimpses like occasionally beating the press, doing some one touch passing etc, but overall very much underwhelming.

We should have given it to Ruud till the end of the season.

He’s cooked.

Unfortunately momentum matters, and it's really hard for a team to get out of a rot. The damage was actually done before he arrived, we complete the shat the bed before he even got here and he probably won't be able to turn it around.

What formation suits this squad? They've been as dreadful regardless.

4-2-3-1 was played for a good 15 years here. After Fergie left what did that formation bring us?

He can take us down, I'm past caring really. It's not his fault. No manager could work with this shower of shit and a brainless captain getting sent off every month.

Who is the next upcoming big manager we’ll take all the momentum out of their career next in around two seasons?

Not writing him off, seeing some bright sparks here and there but it’s a bit depressing the current level of form and results. It’ll obviously take time for him to be judged.[/spoilers]
