Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

He’s a massive upgrade on previous managers we’ve had. A progressive, young manager with a clear, workable system. Arsenal are a better team than us and it showed on the night, but outside of set-pieces (which they’re amazing at) we held our own and didn’t resort to lame, defensive tactics.
Give this guy better players, and time, and we will go places.

I enjoyed our resolve in that first half. Kept the ball and controlled the game. However as soon as we realised, “hey, we’re not doing too badly here” is when we should’ve at least shown some ambition going forwards.

I still don't get Bruno Fernandes in that midfield two. I hope that's not the hill, he'll choose to die on.

It's weird, because the obvious choice today would've been to just stick Casemiro and Ugarte in the middle if we wanted to just contain them.
Casemiro has 0 legs for a game like that and generally treats the ball like a bomb. Bruno was quite good managing distribution today.

The issue is we have 0 threat in attack, especially if Amad isn't on the pitch. Hojlund/Garnacho/Mount is arguably a less threatening front 3 than something Ipswich would roll out.

And then obviously we just don' thave enough players that can cope with that level of athleticism+technicality in the game today.

I don't think it was backs against the wall but it was super conservative. We basically took zero risks on the ball and offered no threat. I think Arsenal improved second half more than us getting worse.

It wasn't a good performance at all imo. Structurally we showed we can defend if needed to but the lack of attacking threat was worrying. It wasn't as if we got into decent positions and fecked the final action, we just never looked dangerous.
Which is what I consider to be backs against the wall and try to snatch a plucky point.

Thats the sort of performance used expect from a Leicester or Ipswich, we need to be set up much better.

We werent going to Arsenal and dominating but couldnt just find balance between attack and defense today.

First half shape was good but in 2nd lost that shape.

Chin up. Let’s go again against Forest. This wasn’t a winnable game anyway. At home you Forest we need the 3 points.

We went toe to toe must of the game. You can see how miles ahead they are tactical execution wise. Undone by set pieces is workable. It will come. It's a good night.

If we had Ten Hag in charge we would have lost 7-0 to this Arsenal team. So happy we gave it a shot and they beat us from 2 corners.

We're a totally different outfit to that under Ten Hag. It's ridiculous the progress already.
Agree. Pretty clear the ideas and structure are there.

Don't think the squad quality is yet but at least there are obvious building blocks. Under Ten Hag I often though we could have the best players in the world and still struggle in many of those games with how we looked to play.

We tried, just fecked up execution endlessly when looking to progress the ball or create.
Did we? Saw a little bit of that in the second half after conceding. The first seemed to be less it endlessly in front of them and eventually pass back to Onana to hoof it.

I do want to say I’m in on this new manager though. It felt like we had got ourselves into the match to go for it more, which is why I’m frustrated.

I don't care where we finishthus season because United deserve it for hiring a fraud and keeping him for too long. I see some hope in Amorim, I hope he start bringing in younger players who can play his style of football. I am done with Rashford, I don't see Hoijund as our leading striker or Zirkzee good enough to be our backup. We need better players to play Amorim's football and make him successful.

Played that way under SAF in big away games too. Short memories. Who remembers City away in 2012?

I mean, it's so early. That was a pretty defensive game though, not that there's anything wrong with that. We basically setup to try for the 0-0. You could see once we had to chase the game, we fell apart.

Rashford is a major issue for him, as is Bruno in that role if we want controlled possession. I feel we have been saying this since forever now. Forwards are too young/average for the most part.

Big positive though is it was respectable, 0-2 to two corners although they were easily the better team is fine. Forest becomes more telling.

I think the plan was always to contain and then look to bring on fresh legs at 60/70 mins and look to sneak a win.

If we manage to hold out then it is called a masterstroke, limiting arsenal to minimal in play chances, keeping osergaard and saka quiet. However; as we did concede from the set piece, we had to take risks earlier, make subs earlier and effectively the plan didn’t work.

Even in the lack of final ball, you can see the interchanges and the switch to the winger, unfortunately Rashford does not seem to be thinking on the same page when receiving it and it ends there. Not just Rashford, jus happens to him a fair bit

We played better in this fixture last season when we lost 3-1 after being shafted by tbe refs then we did today

Today especially in the big games Amad should be part of the front three. He's the best forward we've got and we play him so far away from goal. In a game like this he won't threaten the opposition.
Not enough quality from the remaining attackers to threaten playing in between Arsenal defense and midfield.

Short memories...a match 12 years ago

The game has evolved so much in 12 years, that's a poor example to give.
It has, but the way we set up in away games under him regularly went the same way. Smash and grab. You would think we used to go to the Emirates, Highbury and Anfield etc and dominate, when the reality is we very rarely did something like that.

No complaints with him so far, he's made a good start. Unfortunately we have a lot of very stupid players who will never be a good fit for what he's trying to implement

Despite the score, I'm pretty happy with that performance. We let it slip around the 65-70 mark I felt and lost any feeling of control in the match but before that I though we did well.

I think we have to accept this is a new challenge for Amorim too. The step up on quality from the Portuguese league to the Premier Division is a huge leap. You can set up a team to play Arsenal and compete, but also having to be strong defending set pieces, that'll be something that we'll probably suffer a little from as there isnt the time to work on everything in training.

Hopefully tonight didn't expose something that teams now will look to target over the next few weeks. The PL is very unforgiving, bringing Yoro in too for his debut, he'll need time to adapt to the pace and physical demands of the league.

I hope we go all out for the Europa League this season.

Bottled it hard tonight. Why talk about us suffering and taking time to learn new things only to then play ultra cowardly football? Would have been way more understanding and forgiving if we atleast showed some intent to attack.

Multiple times we had the opportunity on the break in the first half which we did not pursue at all. Gave Arsenal way too much respect. And they were only too happy to let us have the ball as we did feck all with it. Controlling the possession is nonsense and useless if we don't do anything with it. It's like City being happy with 70% possession in the FA Cup final when they did feck all with it in the first half.

Disappointed with how negative we were. Arsenal were missing 3 of their first choice defence. We should have tried to work them more. In the end it was all too comfortable for them.
