Protests following the killing of George Floyd

Christ. I know Biden isn't everyone's favourite guy, but getting this disgusting, orange, imbecile out of office, surely has to be every right-minded American's top priority this autumn.

Equally, I really hope that Trump gets prosecuted, his/his families money and companies taken away, and spends the rest of his miserable life behind bars, his "legacy" in tatters.

I cant think of many people I would really want to wish ill on and have their entire lives destroyed, but he is one of them.

It amazes me how bloody terrible Trump and Johnson are at disguising their true motivations - in this instance, it's just so obvious that Trump is desperate to keep the police on his side, regardless of this criminal case's specifics.

I'm not sure that Raab's comments are as artless as they appear; perhaps the GOT thing was his attempt to downplay the significance and sincerity of the 'taking a knee' gesture.

Oh, I've no doubt he was treating it as a joke. Whether that was deliberately to play to his tory, "racism, what racism?" audience or just because it's the kind of joke that goes down well with his mates so he didn't see the problem, I don't know. I'm just not convinced he's smart enough to distinguish.

Ugh. I have the grisly feeling that, in downplaying the gesture, he was implying that it's unseemly, impertinent and 'common' compared to the archaic ritual of being knighted.

I get the feeling there isn't much to take away. I can't wait for the books to be open on trump inc. I bet everything they accumulated required cash on delivery. So many discrepancies that I'm 100% convinced it's built on massive fraud.

Especially with his “I would only ever kneel for the queen” comment.

Yes, absolutely. It's sad that I hope his ignorance is the case.

I’m increasingly at a loss for words in moments like this.

When will people realise this isn’t a case of a poor choice of words but blatant wilful ignorance.

There is a large majority in Western society who have no intention of entering discussions with open minds & acknowledgment of wrong doings; instead they use their platforms to subvert attempts at progress.

He’s an educated man, this doesn’t mean he has common sense but he would not make such comparisons with other issues.

Personally I'm rather sick of these pirates wrapping themselves in a red, white and blue flag - any flag that isn't black, in fact.

Maybe he's not ignorant and has just come to a different conclusion like many others around Britain
But his conclusion is demonstrably, factually wrong though.

Think you may be right there, is it 'kneeling' or is it 'taking a knee', it depends on how you see it?
Personally I think that when its done, in complete silence, by a peaceful protest crowd facing a group of armed police its a powerful symbolic gesture, and it sends the right message, but when its done out of context, (by many who simply want to be seen 'doing it) it can then become just a copy-cat 'kneeling', somewhat awkward gesture at best and with overtones of GOT.

The conclusion that the taking of a knee relates to subjugation and originates from Game of Thrones is ignorant and wrong.

That’s not a matter of opinion.

Saw my first All Lives Matter shirt this morning at Dunkin Donuts. Rather obese older white man, who'd have thunk it. Made me wonder what the two black persons behind the counter wondered, if they saw the shirt. Fortunately, there was no incident and the man went about his day after getting his coffee.

It looks like we’re getting some changes as a result of the protests but still a long way to go.
When are they going to raid the police pension fund to pay for officers wrong doings?

Well this is interesting:

Mississippi will have to chose between it's two favorite things: College Football and being racist as fukc.

Mississippi: Tough decision...

If the confederate flag looked as drab as hell, half these 'patriots' would have no use for it.
Well, that's my stoooopid opinion anyway...

Unfortunately I don't think this is the case. I lived in Alabama for almost 20 years and traveled to Mississippi and Louisiana regularly as part of my job. The amount of casual racism, let alone institutional, that permeates the deep south is sickening. Hillary got tremendous stick for saying it (even I thought it was too much at the time), but the MAGA/NASCAR/etc.) crowd truly are a basket of deplorables. These people fly the flag because they want a return to those "Good Ole Days" that MAGA evokes.

It’s funny how the redneck fecks who love the confederate flag consider themselves as “patriots” when it represents the forces who literally fought against the US as it exists today.

Diabetes and obesity are also amongst their favorite things.

True, and they don't even have the excuse of superlative creole food (Louisiana), BBQ (Alabama and Texas), or whatever the hell that shit was I had late one night on Peachtree street in Atlanta.

Maybe I just think the flag is an attractive one, and stupidly thought that its bearers felt the same way.

As others have said in this thread, the fact that Southerners claim the flag as central to their "heritage" when it was only a thing for 4 years, and the only thing occurring in those 4 years was a civil war to keep slavery says all you need to know about what "heritage" matters to them.
