Pro Evolution Soccer 2011

Despite my misgivings (which remain the same)...I must say, it's growing on me. Especially with Barca. Once you get into a nice flowing passing rhythm it's very enjoyable. Still not a patch on PES 5 though...But I can't really figure out why?

Also FIFA stalwarts: You are going to have to master the button pressure differences before you can fairly rate it. It's much more sensitive, but it's fine once you've got that.

I pretty much hated the last Evo straight out the gate, but I don't hate this. So it's already a good start.

The last few years everyone has gone mad about "how good Pro Evo is again" yet the thread seems to die pretty quickly and gets relegated to page 4 or 5 etc just a few weeks after release day. I just don't know if Konami have fecked around with PES too much over the last years or is it that FIFA is so much better than the shite that EA used to churn out?

However, after saying that, I have high hopes for this new edition of PES. I just don't think they'll be able to compete with EA's title as resources are limited with Seabass' crew it seems :(

Who knows?

I just hope it gets back somewhere even close to it's best.

Because FIFA remains a deeply flawed game, no matter how much it's improved in recent years.

Yup. I've bought FIFA for the last few years running (same buying pattern as Mockney), and I play it for 2-3 months (max) then never play it again.

Old Pro Evo, I used to play from release day to release day, and not get bored of it. I want that again, don't care what title it is.

I only play online 2vs2 so I hope that side of it is on point...

Yes FIFA is deeply flawed - but it still plays a better game than Pro Evo these days, so it's shows how much Seasbass & Konami have gone backwards.

All my personal opinion (and 99% of the video game reviewing media) though :)

Afro - 2v2 online is where it's at, I agree. I can't believe EA only concentrate on that shitty 11v11 mode and not a dedicated 2v2 room.

Nobody cares if game A plays better than game B when they're both a bit shite.

Pro Evo managed to make the last quality football game, before they both went to pot with the arrival of the next-gen consoles. If any game is likely to get football games back to the standards of "the good old days" it's Pro Evo

Yeah but Pogue, to be fair, If someone released a video of an actual live football game, with a FiFa logo and stamina bars round the edges, I reckon you'd still say "well it doesn't look right to me"...

There's surely no point in comparing games to games that haven't been invented yet...PES 5 was a "flawed" game if you wanna look at it like that...FIFA is the best one available at the moment, the best human kind has so far come up with..so it's completely natural and fair to judge PES by it.

Also, I dunno about yous lots age frames...but I was a kid, then a student during PES' prime..so of course I was playing them from release date to release date. I loved those games, but I'm pretty sure if I played them now I wouldn't have the same inclination to do so. They'd probably seem limited.

Ah, but that's the difference between people who like Pro Evo and those who like FIFA. I couldn't give a fig how a game looks, it's all about how it plays.

That hasn't been the case for 4 years...You're living in the past Grandad..Still clinging to the way things were. I was like you once.

If anything, PES looks better nowadays...apart from the running

To be fair, I haven't played either game regularly for ages now. I bought both FIFA and Pro Evo last year though, for the first time in years and thought they were both "meh".

Since next-gen consoles came out I actually think both developers have been guilty of trying to make great-looking games at the expense of playability. FIFA have always done that though, it's annoying to see Pro Evo making the same mistakes.

Who cares about the commentary, It's always muted or turned down when I play.... either playing music a movie, or the missus is watching something else on the other TV...

@ Plan M, what system you on? Think a 2vs2 match is in order at some stage...

The thing that really let it dow ast year for me was the player movement.

With Fifa, it was the one bit I thought they'd got right. Players would find or run into space relative to their position, overlap and burst forward in support so the game would always flow. The opposition would drop into banks of four and press the ball when they could. It all just looked right and made sense.

With PES, all the players basically just mingled about in the middle of the pitch, as if they were waiting for the game to actually start. It reminded me of Euston train station. You had to instigate passing moves by continiously pressing the make a run button, and even then they'd just run forwards in a perfectly horizontal line until they were a mile offside. The only half workable way around it was to set your attacking stance to about 98%, and even then you'd have to sod about going sideways, waiting for the computer to run in a straight line past you (completely regardless of where the space on the pitch was).

Don't think I'll bother with it this time around if they haven't sorted this out. It just became more and more of a glaring issue the more I played it. It was still fun but the AI was lagging so far behind the rest of the game, it just seemed to mismatch with itself.

Fifa 07 was probably my favourite football game since the days of the Megadrive. Used to be a PES fan but it went down hill after 4.

FIFA 10 was not 'a bit shite'. On metacritic (creates a review average) it got 91, the third highest of any football game ever. So it was almost universally recognised as quite a long way superior to Pro Evo 2010.

Reviews can't always be trusted though and sometimes give the impression they are afraid to piss off the big boys.

FIFA10 was alright. FIFA09 was better but the WC cup was better than them both.

I have a good feeling about Pro Evo this year though. I'm really looking forward to the demo.

Fifa 07 was dreadful.

I loved it because I was unbeatable on it. And I scored some of the most ridiculous goals ever seen on it with Ronaldo. They would generally involve running past about 6 players before chipping the keeper. Pretty much guaranteed a goal game from that, and at least another goal a game from the low cross into the box. Great fun

I don't buy that. The reviews for FIFA 09 were nothing special and for years almost every reviewer has slagged EA's efforts off for years. I just think FIFA 10 was a genuinely brilliant game.

I agree about the promise of this PES and i'm more excited than I have been for any of the next gen versions.

Total rubbish.

For many years the FIFA games were (quite rightly) criticised in every magazine review, while Pro Evo was praised.

For people to now argue that reviews don't matter is patently stupid.

They mean shit.

I just re-read IGN's review of Fifa10, and it's full of what can only be described as bare faced lies.

I'm leaning towards buying neither game this year. Not convinced about Pro Evo yet, and I don't think I want to risk Fifa again after being conned out of £30 last year (partly by what turned out to be utterly innacurate reviews)

What are the 2 higher rated games?

dude, me and you have probably been acquainted at some time or another :D

you play on PC?

if so, definitely so.

my pro evo 10 stats on line.. 4 games played 1v1 and probably over 1000 2v2s.

I only play in the early hours mind you, after a smoke.

only managed to get two games played on the demo last night. My modem f'ed up twice during download which ment restarting, then when you finish a match in the game you are forced to sit through a 6 minute trailer for the game (WTF Konami, WTF?)

Have to say, I am very impressed with what I have seen so far.

In my first two games I didn't score in either - came close a few times and was denied by some fantastic keeping and the post. I mishit a good few passes (direction not right or too much/too little power) which I loved because I know it was me that mishit them and not the computer scripting it - I think the ease of some passes (as mentioned by Mockney yesterday) is down to the fact that I was playing with Barcelona and the passing at barca is brilliant - the poorer the player the more manual the passing is, so that excellent passers, like Xavi, can play it quickly and accurately like no one else.

I do think defending will take a lot of getting used to as the mechanic is quite different for 'pressing' so it will take some practice. I also don't agree with Mockney regarding dribbling - I was not able to just glide past people, even with Messi, but I was able to create angles to turn them on occassion - without using any tricks (cause I haven't figured them out yet). Again, it has only been two games so I didn't expect to be skinning everyone.

I also think the new camera angle is brilliant and really changes the look and feel of the game - and the graphics are quite a bit nicer with some lovely animations. It has been said that the graphics for the demo have been capped in order to keep the demo file size down, but I can't vouch for that.

Agree with this. PES was my favorite game until a few years back but FIFA's surpassed them by quite a margin in the last few years, and to be fair FIFA 10 is better than any football game that's ever been made.

I hope this PES gets it right. I thought the last one was absolute rubbish. The players are so static. Everything is so linear.

so it looks from these posts then that PES may have made a turn around this year? they have lost my trust over recent years so i wont jump in based on reviews unlike fifa which i now have no hesitation buying but i will rent or see if a mate gets it first and if its a marked improvment then i shall be investing

fanboi.:nono:

Happy to get both, usually end up finding PES more rewarding to play.

Pish and nonsense.

I see what you did there.

Actually the world cup game probably has the best gameplay of the lot.

The only reason I'm saying this is because I genuinely feel that games get better over time, unlike say movies. For it's time my favorite winning eleven was easily IMO the best football game of all time, but I doubt I'd ever play it over fifa 10 now.
