Pro Evolution Soccer 2011

Forgot about that. Yes, it was dire.

I want over-lapping full-backs though. I need over-lapping full-backs.

Please tell me the over-lapping full-backs are back?

Dani Alves pushes on like mad for me in the PES2011 demo - but don't know if that is a full back thing or a Dani Alves thing

Also Pique likes to join the attacks if you aren't winning with 10 to go :D. Read about the keeper coming up for a corner in another persons game.

Never been one for faffing about with tactics tbh.

It's all a bit too Football Manager for me ;)

Then let's say it shouldn't a source of concern.PES2011 will be apparently even more advanced in terms of tactics and more importantly the impact it has on gameplay.
Maybe one day you should really focus on it, it's really worth it.

I agree with Raees' points about FIFA shooting...it is cartoony..Very at times.

Can't say I noticed it a lot no....

I just can't believe that with a next gen console..360 movement (apparently) they still can't make it better than this!!...in fact the player movements look more realistic in this and it's fecking 5 years ago on and old gen!!

Just fecking patch this to it and update the graphics you Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime

Yeh i'm with you there.

I really hope it isn't a game that basically relies on faffing about with tactics.

Exactly.. that vid made me cry.:(

I spent a ridiculous amount of time on PES 5, I got it taken off me in the end because my Junior Cert was coming up. The final straw came when my Mam found that I was waking up early to get a few games in before school.

Mockney's long post on the last page summed up the situation well for me, I found PES to be a long way behind Fifa last year and I don't expect it will close the gap enough for me to switch, pre ordered Fifa today anyway.

*sniff*

Someone of the goals in there you can't score on either FIFA or PES now...WHHYYY!!!!!

That game did so much right...

I think FIFA WC 2010 is the greatest football game to date, but PES 5 has to be the greatest achievement. Like you said, some of the goals you could score, and can't in the latest and greatest.

I think I spent more time in my life playing PES 5 than I've spent in class and studying over 4 years of college.

I've literally sat and watched 3 or 4 of those United PES volumes now....God I miss that game. I could play it for a whole day and not get bored of it...or get bored, then get an itch again after an hour or so. Brilliant game.

I know I said it would probably seem limited now (and it probably would) but watching those videos, god I miss it.

Just played my first game on it, mixed feelings and suspect it will grow on me.

Things I like:

Through balls - what a delight. The ball they play is a beauty and the way your forward runs onto it through the back line is a joy to watch.
Crossing - again, fantastic to watch
Animations - much much better than Fifa. None of them are boring, they all look great down to the way the player angles themselves depending on how the ball is coming in.
NPCs - They made good use of the width on the pitch and played really intelligently against me, they made diving header clearances as the ball was coming down to my player to volley, charged in jumped and headed it away, just looked really intelligent.
No gay Fifa running into players to tackle them - Not as effective as Fifa which I loved, you couldn't just bump fingers with a player to take the ball off them like you can do in Fifa.
The shots - great animation and great to be able to ping a decent ball from range again.
The experience - it feels like a game of football, it doesn't focus on go forward, shoot, score. It makes you play out wide, overlapping runs from full backs, using the wingers, playing backwards etc. I despise playing Be A Pro online on Fifa to join a team of idiots that kick off, run forward, pass forward, try and score.
The manual passing - this is on my list of both like and dislike, I like it because you can do great moves like passing the ball into empty space to the side if an attacker is in front of you, and then change to another player and run him onto the ball.
The environment - stadiums and crowds have always been much better in PES than Fifa and the 3d is great. Not 2d men like in Fifa.

What I didn't like:

The player graphics - too fuzzy and pixelated on my screen.
The speed - it felt so boring at times, none of the players have pace, felt I couldn't bomb down the line with Messi and cut inside as the other players could keep up with me and the turning circle is horrendous for the players, no quick cut back and turns it takes forever.
Passing time - for me it took a good second to second and a half after pressing X for them to pass the ball, this just annoyed me greatly.
Lack of skills - again this is an annoyance for me to not see in the demo, but the video after the game displays lots of great looking skills in the full game.
The manual passing - this is on my list of both like and dislike, I dislike it because you can absent mindedly play a pass you think is right but actually it sends it completely the other way making you look stupid.
The camera - too close for me but I suspect there will be more options in the full game.

Just played a computer and drew 0 - 0. Loved the feeling of a proper intelligent game rather than pass forward, pass forward, shoot, miss, ball up other end, pass forward, pass forward, shoot, goal, kick off, pass forward etc etc. Highlight of the game - their LB passed the ball back across face of goal, Ibrahimovic intercepted it and had a shot blocked by defender, ball comes out to Messi on edge of the box who runs to where it is going to land, jumps, chests it down to the floor, takes 2 steps and hits it with his left, ball cannons off the far crossbar. Their RB makes a diving header to put the ball out of play.

Wow. Brings back memories. And yeah, the variety of goals is truly amazing. I'm depressed :(
And here I was thinking the current generation are doing a great job.
:(

I'd agree with Zarlak's analysis...apart from The experience...which I didn't feel was like football. Mainly because of The speed. And I didn't think the crossing was very good. But everything else was pretty accurate for me.

 the way he chested it down

What I need to know though Mockney, which game will you be buying?

To be honest...I've already stopped playing it. I'll probably get it...It's decent enough, and I'm probably just bored of playing the same game with the same teams with the same conditions over and over (which never used to be the case incidentally) ...but it hasn't gripped me that's for sure. Maybe cos I started looking at PES5 videos and hated that it wasn't that..

I think one of it's fundamental flaws is it's accessibility. All the manual passing, having to feck with your tactics to get people to make any runs, the incredibly slow turning circle an lack of any pace at all...all well and good for making the thinking mans game, but that's not what made Pro the success it was..Everyone bought FIFA for the PS1 and Megadrives...it was Pro's accessibility, the pick up and play and "wow this is so much more like football" factor that made it usurp it..You could do tricks, you did have pace, people made runs, you could score great headers without having to time it to within a milisecond ...It was fun!...For all it's good stuff, this isn't actually very fun for me. Especially with the sluggishness. I haven't jumped off the sofa yet or felt compelled to play again, more in a "yeah might as well" way..I think they've gone back on a lot of what made Pro great in the day..Yes if you fiddle with the tactics you got better, but it didn't stop the leyman loving it...It's commendable and all, but not really fun. And I want it to be fun.

I might actually just rent it.

Ah that's bad news.

Try it yourself mate when the demo comes out and see for yourself, there are alot more postive reviews than negative, that's for sure.

I certainly will be. I'm hoping and praying i'll be purchasing PES this year. It's been too long.

I played the PS2 version of PES6 last night, and it's honestly miles better than either PES10 or Fifa10, in terms of pure playability.

It's a bit clumsy in terms of the passing, but it just plays so well. None of the next gen PES robot football shite, none of the Fifa "I'll just play the exact same passing move I do every time I get the ball" shite. It's actually streets ahead of either, despite looking utterly dated.

What the feck happened?

To be fair..
a) PES10 got more good reviews than bad...especailly early ones.

b) early reviews are always shite, far more concerned with the fact that they've gotten the game early, and want to get the game early again next year.

I've no idea. I've half a mind to buy a PS2 just to get PES 5 again...those videos made me pine...how much can you get a PS2 for nowadays?

I am only watching players reviews, and with PES 10 none was good, with this one though it's another story.

I never read "proffesional" reviewers cause they are always full of shit. They either overrate or underrate a game.

Tbh PES5 was far from being a great great game of football. It had countless negative aspects to it.
I don't buy into all this "PES 5 is the best game ever" thing, it was a good game for its time that's for sure

Same. I do have my PS2 set up with the Pro Evo disc in it. And I also still have it on my pc - although they arent the same... I did go back and play it for a time. But just like any of today's football games, after a while you do get pig sick of its issues.

And it has as many if not more than Fifa 10. It still holds its own with today's best football games, but the amount of times people go on about it like its the father of their first born... Well sorry not for me. Great game for its time, good game for today.
