Manchester United 2:3 Nottingham Forest

Post-match discussion

He’s probably been a top 3 performer this season. Today was possibly his worst mistake yet…even including last year…but he’s been very good for us so far this season.
At this point I don't care. Onana cannot be trusted and in that position, you need someone you can trust.

Mate, we’ve played Everton, Ipswich and Forest and got 4 points from it. What the feck are you delighted about.

We created feck all after we got back to 3-2. It’s been as bad as anything we’ve seen under the previous managers - but yeah it’s a new name so let’s pretend it’s class.

Ipswich should have won, Everton missed great chances, were lucky we’ve not lost every league game under him

A fight to the death in the realm of nominative determinism you say?

this team is a mess. I feel sorry the coach team. it is good that he has taken the job in the middle of the season so that he can have a proper assessment of this team. big calls needed in the summer.

Amorim might have regretted taking on this role. Next year, he will start turning bald and resign due to health issues. This club is cursed since Glazers decided to borrow money to buy this club. It is almost god's way of punishing American business of capitalism.

I thought Ugarte, Amad and de Ligt played well. Garnacho is not a starter and needs to develop his football intelligence as does Hoijlund. I'd fine anyone who tries a stupid, useless flick and gives the ball away cheaply, as Bruno does way too often. Marcus just isn't at the races these days and Onana and Martinez need to take a long hard look at themselves for the complete lack of concentration and professionalism when switching off in a must win game.

Amorin hasn't sussed his first 11 out yet, he's still finding his feet with us. Two howlers conceded, on any another day we win this 2-1. The team is taking shape slowly but surely.

We were never going to score, and it's not at all why we lost, but 7 minutes added on was a joke, in a half that had 3 goals, 9 substitutions, a linesman equipment issue, and a head injury stoppage (that the ref seemed to force on Maz, it looked like he was signaling that he was fine), plus the keeper taking an age to take every goal kick. Stoppage time needs to stop being a rough guess by referees, and actually measured.

We were shite, got what we deserved, could have played another hour, and a goal wasn't coming. Hard to see how this gets better without yet another squad overhaul, and that just can't keep happening. I have faith in Ruben, but I don't like 3 at the back. I wonder if he'll gradually shift away from it like Van Gaal did.

The issue wasn't the formation, or the structure. The structure :-

Allowed Dalot to get the ball in a lot of space very often
Allowed passing options for every player in every phase
Allowed for plenty of numbers in defensive transition
Allowed for options for Rasmus to play off

The issue was the players and them continually making very, very basic passing mistakes and decisions that all professional players at this level should be required to be able to achieve consistently. No matter how much beneficial framework you place around them, if they can't accurately make 5-10 yard passes without turning them into throw-ins, corners and counter-attacks, you are doomed.
Absolutely agree

Doesn’t matter what changes the manager makes while the team are still making massive individual mistakes all the time.. you can’t coach them to not make brain dead decisions, you just need better players

If I was Amorim, I would just play Altay in the next game. Tell Onana that he can feck off with trying to be the passing GK, and if he doesn’t get his head right - he should not start. That second goal is miserable- and just at a time when it completely changed the game.

Everything else being equal between the sides, we still do not have a finisher in this team. We are always going to struggle because under pressure no one in a United shirt can be counted on to score. Højlund should still be an understudy to a player of Van Persie's or Ruud's stature. We are trying to be a top club with two "strikers" who wouldn't be starting for our opposition today. Højlund is a prospect and I don't think it was wrong to go after him, he could yet turn into a beast, but we need help now.

TBH for me, that's the whole point of this season.

The system obviously works, we saw the control and interplay that can occur. We saw the threat it can offer.

I think part of our current issue is how many changes we keep making per game, but its understandable, in order to get players fit and know who's who. This is a real transition. The one concern I have concerning Amorim is us on set pieces, more than the Arsenal game, this game exposed a potential flaw.

Our fans also need a bit of a reality check on some things. On paper, we very well could be competing for top 4 with the current set up, but the reason why there is such a consistency variance in this squad is pretty clear.

1. We always overrate our youngsters and overstate growth jumps. Bruno in CM is currently better than Mainoo as a CM. Yet Mainoo has a reputation of being somewhat of a sure starter for some reason. At present, he shouldn't be. His athleticism, off the ball movement and positioning require a lot of improvement, and that improvement isn't guaranteed. This is why De Ligt spent time on the ball looking for options. When we did progress through the middle, it was either Ugarte ( who is not a ball player) or Bruno coming deep. Garnacho, Dalot and Rashford are other examples. We wait and hope for players to develop rather than making immediate fixes. Garnacho is currently not a star player, yet we treat him like he is and expect him to be a superstar one day, when in reality, his performances are midtable level. Dalot and Rashford were given so much time and space to grow due to this culture of youth development, same mistake we made with Martial.

2. Our attack is really poor. Outside of Bruno and Amad, it lacks any true quality. We lack an ability to dribble, an ability to play through the lines, good first touch, an ability to cross the ball and an ability to finish chances throughout the attack. In attack, I genuinely believe that Mainoo would offer more than Rashford, Zirkzee, Mount or Garnacho. They don't have a presence or impact. Its frustrating watching us keep the ball and progress play to the attack, only to see possession quickly lost or possession recycled due to a lack of creativity.

This game was a bit of a one off and if played a good, we could cruise this game. However, it showed us why we will continue to be inconsistent. We can't guarantee good performances from our attack, even when they are given time and space. That's the difference.

Id sell at least 85% of these brain-dead players, one fart away from scaring themselves off the ball, Onana is just terrible so soon as Ruben decides to chuck them out, we'll be stuck with with rubbish results, no manager has the ability to get a tune out of the deaf

Horrendous defensive display.

I wonder whether Amorim takes a gamble at some point and shelves the back three. They can’t do it plain and simple.

This is a weird comment

The first goal was a corner, whole team needs to work on set piece defense

The second was a giveaway by Bruno then an Onana mistake

The third goal is the only one you could really attribute to our back 3.

They’ve looked pretty good last few games, too

He saved us so many times this season. Poor mistake but so far he was key for us
Yes that is true but the test of a keeper is what he has to do when the big moments come. He always seems to make a mistake every time we start playing a bit better.

We lose a few more games now and then team starts throwing the towel because we aren’t winning games. Rinse and repeat.

Seasons gone. They let Ten Hag carry on too long and sink the season.
Just letting him start the season was enough to signal to everyone that the season doesn't really matter. So it's no surprise morale is at rock bottom.

What did you see that makes you think Yoro is going to be an excellent player for us? I've nothing against him, he wasn't bad but he also did absolutely nothing and I'm not sure he made us any better defensively. He seemed pretty anonymous.

I agree on everything else you said. The only players I currently see as good enough in this squad are Amad, Mazraoui, Bruno, and maybe De Light on current form. The rest are woeful. Mainoo equally seems a shell of his former self this season.
Yoro's positioning is excellent and it's because he reads the danger quickly and gets himself where he needs to be. He plays like he's under zero pressure, cool as a cucumber, makes good recovery tackles, gets back up, isn't easily done for pace. I think he's going to be a hit.

None of the goals should've gone in. I thought we put those mistakes behind us but here we are again.

3 rd goal should not go it because either Onana should catch it, or Licha should block it. Both of them leaving the ball thinking it’s going out.

Honestly I don't understand how some players could become pro. You see things that you would understand at teams who play Sunday league and their players work 40-50 hrs per week at regular job.
You can have whatever tactics, formation you want but if you can't make simple football things you can't success.
Honestly I have no idea what Ineos wants to do with that, but from my perspective, we need to get rid of certain players, bring some real leader/captain and hope for more transfers like Mazraoui.

I never usually agree with Fabian Delph, but we really should be doing the basics of football.
The basics are for plebs! Why make a simple pass to a teammate when you can do a backheel no-look flick and pray that your 1 in a 1,000 success rate comes off? Think big, man, think big!

Though I concur, Amorim has been in the job five minutes and inherited a complete shitshow.

The players we have are simply not good enough.

Not even close to good enough. We had to win that to stop getting detached from the top 6 places, it's crazy how bad we are at the basics.

Ok

You’re gonna need to find yourself a support group because he’ll be starting for the foreseeable.

Is it so much to ask that some of these cnuts could show some bollocks.

I trust completely in Ruben, and not at all in these wankers who are scared of their own shadows.

the likes of Mazraoui and Ugarte give me some hope that recruitment in the future will be better
Yeah I am being a bit reactionary. We need a genius to come in though. Someone who’s top top quality. It’s not happened since RVP. Not even been close.

Disjointed and unimaginative, I feel sorry for Amorim, poor guy is realising the job he has on

Exactly. Anyone blaming the manager at this point is just not being intellectually honest. This is 100% to do with the players and ETH. ETH recruited a lot of these bang average players. Zirkzee: average. De Ligt: average. Antony: below average. Come to think of it who has he brought in that’s really been great? Mazroui has been good but was he the one really pushing for him? Martinez has been good at times I suppose. But where are the great talents?

Rubbish 3 points dropped today. We shouldn’t be conceding 3 goals at home to this lot yet 3 defensive errors has cost us the result. However, we had much of the ball but didn’t do much with it, we weren’t creative enough and we made some poor decisions on the ball.

We could unfortunately be looking at 3 league defeats in a row which would be terrible for the teams confidence and league position.

Anyone who's having a go at Hojlund can do one, if we defended sensibly he's got us a nice 1-0.

Let’s not pretend our back 4 wasn’t consistently giving up soft goals either.

I hope Bruno is rested for three games so this forum can see how useless, blunt, and cowardly the rest of our attack is.

This fanbase is lower IQ than the average fanbase. They’d rather watch Mount hide, Zirkzee stroll around, Mainoo not get in the box for rebounds, rather than Bruno try a shot, Garnacho try a run, or Dalot who consistently got himself into great positions and had a lot of touches, crosses, and (shit) shots.

But hey, endless ball retention by some cowards is better than a bad shot or misplaced pass.

Anyway, on the game itself, we were pretty good in the first half, collapsed due to GK errors in the second, but were starting to build momentum again till Bruno came off.
Totally agree with you, it can be incredibly annoying the lack of insight of how football actually works from many people, especially on this forum.

Our most criticised players are often the only ones that do any damage up front. Not that they are without fault, far from it, but you can't just drop or sell the majority of players that actually create for us, we'd be much worse off without them. Actual upgrades on them would be incredibly expensive as well.

Endless over the top rhetoric about the squad and or managers to boot. Worst team in the world when we lose games, and still the worst even if we win. Absolutely dour. Times are tough, but it feels there's a real lack of actual support for the team.
