PL D FA Premier League

Liverpool 2:2 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

What a match! I secretly thought that Amorim might have picked a weaker team last week to rest up for this. Maybe, but... Today's was definitely what I believe to be our strongest available lineup.

Bruno was my MOTM, but Ugarte deserves it, too. Dalot also had a great game. I'm not going to give anyone stick for today's performance - I expect a little over-excitement and a few brainfarts in a derby. It wasn't the norm over the course of the game, and we were OK for it. Some are still getting used to the system.

That's only maybe the second match (City being the first) where I've seen a full team effort over the whole 90+ minutes. Today, no one held back. Now the players have their own efforts on record to show they can play like that. The R word should be relegated from our vocabulary for the rest of the season.

We have seven days to the next match, and Arsenal are beatable. We could repeat the FA Cup again, and take the Europa League to boot, if there's enough belief in effort within the squad.

Amorim's system can certainly work, and after a week of training, we looked better. Another week and we should be even more ready. After that, we just have to show up for the next three. Not only are Southampton bottom of the table, but both Brighton and Fulham are on four draws in the last five. We should pull 9 points.

Struggling to think where their 2.87 XG came from. A pen is anywhere from 0.75 to 0.89 depending on where you look, but the only other decent chances they had were Gakpo’s, both at tight angles. I wouldn’t have said they were any higher than 0.5 a piece.

Amad’s equaliser and Hojlund’s one one should put us above 1.00 on their own.

Definitely a contender for performance of the season, certainly our best one under Ruben. Was Maguire maybe put off by those two scouse defenders with last kick of the game

13 pages on the first day of a win... might be some sort of record in the five years I've been here.

Win?

Special mention to Zirkzee. He was booed off last week by our own fans at OT. Came back this game and contributed to the pass to Maguire which should have won us the game. Great mentality. Hope he is another Maguire, booed off by our fans but came back strongly to be one of the important players in the team.

Still really pissed off about Oliver booking Maguire for a fair tackle and not sending that clown Nunez off for slamming himself into De Light.
Also an office call against Garnacho towards the end when he was ONSIDE.

Ah here. I actually thought he did well but come on, a great mentality would be sticking that last chance in the Scouse net.

Come on now, try getting booed off by your own 74,310 fans and play next game derby at Liverpool and perform well. In my book, this is great mentality!

Btw, I was talking about Zirkzee!

The pass was the right option as confirmed by Amorim. You could even argue that Maguire should have squared it to Garnacho to finish off. You should always pass to the player who's in a better position to score than you.

. If we need to sell the likes of Garna or Dalot - we still have to sign a top left wingback or two. Sacrificing Zirzkee to bring-in a striker that fits us, also makes sense

Seriously? After today's performance from them both, you post in here to sell them.

Refereeing was shit as expected when I saw the name of the ref. How many times had he fecked us over?

Great game otherwise. Probably best performance at Anfield for years.

I'm talking about Zirkzee too.I felt he should have shot himself not passed to Maguire.

I'll not argue too much about it but a top forward would have taken that shot on.

He shouldn't be a referee again. That was a world class sliding tackles. Maybe this is modern day football nowadays, every sliding tackle come with high probability of a foul.

Just finished the game. Amazing performance.

We need a player like Keano that can motivate our players to do well when we are playing lesser opponents.

Amad was bit anonymous apart from the goal.

De Ligt was unlucky.

Hojlund lad, you need to get going soon.

Debatable given the person in the arguably better position was a CB. More importantly the pass was a poor one. It was hit too hard and bounced towards Maguire instead of rolled.

Come on. It was a good pass and the right pass to make regardless the receiving player was a CB or not. I mean Martinez also scored in the same game as CB. Just accept that it was a bad miss from Maguire. Overall Maguire and Zirkzee played well.

Maguire was brilliant on the night and Zirkzee had a pretty decent cameo. Both were at fault for the goal. Maguire should have done better but it was a poorly executed pass imo. It’s not a big deal, I just want see him improve performances, first and foremost anyway.

Feels strange that Arse fans would have been supporting us yesterday and must be a bit disappointed that we didn't finish their job! So sorry!!
However, maybe now they will be a bit uncomfortable about next week. Good.

You’re overestimating how much you get per chance while also forgetting loads of other shots that Liverpool took. Amad’s xG for the goal was 0.12. Hojlands chance was 0.11.

The reason Liverpool have a higher xG, pen aside, is simply because they had more shots from better positions. See this shot map.

Liverpool had 18 non-penalty shots so approx 0.11 xG per shot. The average NPxG per shot is about 0.10 so makes sense really.

Good point but they've proved they can more than compete with the best in the league so far so it just begs the question, why the hell are we languishing in the bottom half.
Without Kobbie and Ugarte it’s open season for other teams on our goal. We desperately need a LB/ LWB ST/CF and a midfielder in January but won’t have the cash to do it

Aye but it also ignores many factors like; who had the shot, a one legged blind man gives the same xg as peak RVN.... whether a shot falls to a right footed player on the wrong side of the goal or vice versa, it does not differentiate between a player like Lineker who pretty much scored all his goals within the 6 yard box is treated the same as a player like Paul Scholes who mostly scored from outside the area, a 16 year old defender making their debut or a 35 year old veteran who has never scored in 500 games, it does not account for recent form of the player who is shooting, it does not take into account the actual moment of a match i.e. the fatigue levels of a player, whether or not a team has already scored, whether a team has been building pressure, whether the keeper is having a worldie, the wind, the rain, the state of the pitch, the pace or quality of the pass, whether the ball bobbles etc.etc.etc.....

Effectively it is as shite as Duckworth Lewis and worse as it serves no actual purpose, it picks certain things which somebody has decided are relevant, and in the vacuum of a spreadsheet they may well be but in the real world there are a whole host of much more important factors that are simply ignored, XG will roughly be right with a large enough dataset, however on a game by game basis it is about as inciteful as a conversation between Piers Morgan and Donald Trump (unless the incite you obtain is that both should be put out of our misery).
It is what it is. As long as you understand what it is and isn't it's useful. If it incorporated the things you point out it doesn't, it would have been worse than useless.

Why wasn't Robertson booked at the end - cycnical fouland booted the ball away?

Can't stand arsenal but good to hear the stories about a dressing room bust up between VDV and TAA; former clearly in the right.

Will Slot/FSG have the guts to sell TAA otherwise the Madrid move and half hearted performances like yesterday are going to break their team spirit?

Yeah, a good pass that bobbled up to his shin, notoriously easy chance for a centre back to tuck away first time. Because every player in that position loves to see the ball coming to them like that.

Who voted 9:0? ffs . Probably the worst set of caf votes we've had in a while.

Hmm... It was at low pace and Maguire should easily read it. This is PL and that was one of the easiest chance you will get so near to the goal. PL's players are capable of volleying a ball at fast pace. 9/10 it will be a goal. Anyway, we will have to agree to disagree.

The extremes on here are funny. Now we apparently just need “a couple of players” to be an incredible team
Three quality players for the first 11 will transform this team. In fact an actual Manchester United quality striker would have us much further up the table.

Funny way to describe a draw where we missed an open goal which would have won it in the final seconds.

You also seem to have misunderstood Amorim. He was happy with this performance. Because it was very good. He was pissed off about us being capable of playing this well but not doing it in every match.
Sure, but Liverpool could have been a couple of goals clear by that point, as we conceded a lot more good chances than they did.

I didn’t misunderstand Amorim at all. He said to Sky that their reaction, and the public’s reaction at large, to our performance was going to be coloured by how we expected the game to be like. Accordingly, everyone was very happy with that when a paddling was anticipated, but it wasn’t a dominant performance away against a better team or anything. We were still second best and need to improve a lot more to expect to win matches like that.

Better today, but we were still second best. I liked Amorim not being too impressed as well. Shows the standards he has and that he knows that we need to perform better than we did today.
Wow, you found a reason to complain after that game.

Everything in bold is a figment of your imagination. He never said anything of the sort. As is your own repeated claim that we were second best. Can only come from someone so obsessed with xG that they misuse it to try and understand what happened in individual games.
