I feel like Coutinho's career is on the line. It's important for him that he makes this transfer and would be really happy for him. He deserves and Barca are also desparate for this

Agreed. Liverpool shouldn't stand in his way and let the lad to fulfill his aspirations.

Can't imagine the lad will be happy playing for a club blocking his dream move like this. Barca will move on to other targets and won't be back for him next year. This is his one shot and liverpool are standing in his way. All this talk of him having to play because it's world cup year doesn't hold true either. Brazil are hardly stacked in his posistion these days and they will be aware of his circumstances at liverpool. As long as he performs for them in friendlies etc then he will make the world cup regardless of his performance for pool.

A lot of people are saying Barca will never sign him unless they do it now. What are you basing that on? It's actually not impossible that he will patch things up with Klopp and play regularly for Pool if he stays, and it's also not impossible that he actually improves his game over the next season either if that happens. So 9 months from now we can have the exact same situation, only with Coutinho being a better player than he is right now. Why wouldn't Barca want to sign him then?

I think it all depends on how good you think Coutinho is.

If he's a genuine replacement for Iniesta, which many scoff at, then of course they will wait and bring him in next summer if possible. A bit like Madrid waiting for Ronaldo.

I personally think this is more like them bringing Cesc in a few years back. A player they didn't need at all but just fancied because he was connected with the club, one of the better players in the PL and would give the supporters some satisfaction for the transfer window.

In the case of the latter, they may well find another player to fit that billing.

Why should Liverpool care if he's happy or not? Clubs aren't wish granting charities. They are supposed to compete and there're millions of fans with feelings behind them. He just signed a lucrative long term contact and declared how easy of a decision it was. They didn't twist his arm to make him sign the contract so he's ought to honor it.

He recently signed a new contract. If he's not happy it should be with himself and his agent.

To suggest Liverpool should fold and let him go is nonsense.

He signed the contract, Liverpool don't need the money. He'll better buckle up and start performing again if he wants the move.

Well, if I was part of a competent Barcelona board and Liverpool don't want to sell Coutinho for 160M when I need him the most, obviously I'm not getting him next year when I've been looking for a replacement, maybe even signed him, unless it comes at a discount.

If it was really about Liverpool not selling him because the timing is wrong they would talk to him and say they would let him leave next summer for a reasonable price, but I haven't read about that. So, to round it up, if Barcelona come back for Coutinho next year in the same price range they'll look stupid, and if Liverpool let him leave next year for ~100M we're talking of a 60M discount for a year, that would be stupid too, so this move happens now or won't happen in a couple years

He'll be in the squad for sure, but it won't be good preparation for a World Cup if he hardly ever plays for most of the domestic club season.

That said, it is disgraceful Liverpool standing in the way of his dream move like this. Players will now think a billion times before ever entering into any kind of contract with that club.

I'm assuming you have the same feelings towards Van Dijk and Southampton?

Nonsense, fair fecks to them for holding on to one of their best players. It's the WC year so Coutinho will buck up and give his best too.

So far, since this drama started Oxlade and Lemar have chosen Liverpool over Arsenal and Chelsea, maybe is the total opposite.

What a load of crap, he signed a contract in January and he is one of our best players.

Maybe ask the 'Ox' if he has thought a billion times about signing for us.

He signed a contract with no release clause and didn't have any gentleman's agreement with the club to leave for a price.

That said, he was right to try for the transfer when it came as it certainly was a dream move for him. But Liverpool also had full rights to deny him, and they have been successful.

I hate liverpool with venom, but that is complete bullshit. The player signed a contract - which I can only assume pays him extremely well. He must respect that if they refuse to sell him.

That said, I do hope he manage to cry himself away from that lot :D

No, because we'd have to be stepping back into the 1970s and 1980s for Liverpool to be a dream move for any top division player.
But Van Dijk wanted to play in the Champions League, he was desperate to. It's no different from Coutinho being desperate to play for Barcelona if we're going by your logic.

Both players recently signed long term contracts, neither club is under any obligation to sell.

Lemar isn't signing for Liverpool. Oxlade is nothing better than average squad player who knew he'd be struggling to make the bench at Chelsea let alone play. So he jumped at Liverpool who were desperate to sign someone, anyone, and promised him plenty of game time.

What a load of crap, he signed a contract in January and he is one of our best players.

When there's no threat of a really big club ever coming for you, you don't need to worry about that. His next club will be a Stoke or West Brom if he's lucky.

Technically you are right, but ultimately Liverpool will pay the price for holding him hostage against his will.

It is *very* different. Coutinho dreamed of playing for one of the giants in Spain growing up as a kid. There is no way Van Dijk's big childhood dream was the chance to one day play for Liverpool.

The chance to miraculously realise a seemingly impossible childhood dream would be a huge deal for anyone. To see that ripped out of your hands would be devastating beyond belief, knowing full well the chance will probably never coming around again.

I know these are mulit-millionaire footballers so it's hard to feel sorry for them suffering over big money transfer deals. But they are still human beings.

Even though it might strengthen Liverpool, I am sort of glad that the Coutinho, VVD and perhaps even Sanchez saga has shown that clubs do how some power.

Contracts are there to mutually protect the player and the clubs financial future.

Don't sign a long term contract extension and then expect your club to just bend over and sell you when your dream club comes in for you six months later.

Coutinho is a stupid boy.

Do you know them both personally?

How is there "no way" VVD dreamed of playing for Liverpool? It's not entirely impossible that he grew up following Liverpool. Even if he didn't, regardless of what he wanted when he was a kid, perhaps he now wants to play for someone like Klopp. As far as I'm aware, Coutinho hasn't always dreamed of playing for Barca. He said in an interview some years ago that his dream club was only Real Madrid.

The desire to play for Barca/Madrid and the desire to play for a Premier League club in the Champions League isn't exactly the same, but it's not as wildly different as you are making out. Both players are looking to make the next step in their careers, and like Coutinho's move to Barca possibly not happening again, Van Dijk may also not get the opportunity again. He could have a stinker of a season driven by discontent and he might not get the interest next summer.

Look at the handle mate, surely Barca's handle won't be 1996javi.
Although, still feel the transfer will go through as Spanish Transfer Window shuts tomorrow

I'm enjoying 'player power' getting smacked up this window. You want more money and more security, by all means sign a long term contract. Just understand that you don't then get to down tools and piss off at your leisure if you get a better offer. Can't have it both ways.

Would be a disaster now for Liverpool to let him go, essentially having replaced him with Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Van Dijk and Keita's clubs didn't exactly buckle to them so their fans are not going to accept the opposite from Liverpool...

Barca will try again tomorrow. They have one full day to do the deal. If liverpool sell him, it would have been a very poor window, if they dont then they would have added squad depth and nothing else.

I'm feeling a little uneasy about this. Even though it's unlikely, I'm dreading that he's sold tomorrow because he somehow insisted and can't be replaced because there isn't time.
