Philippe Coutinho

What a shit position arld Phil is in now. Has to play out of his skin for a team his heart is no longer at in the hope he can play football somewhere he wants to eventually, probably ostracised by the fans and club unless he turns it on very quickly, only making it more difficult if he doesn't. Not that I feel particularly sorry for him, but there's a bit of empathy there somewhere.

Can't say I feel sorry for him tbh but I'll happily admit I'm a cnut for that.

I reckon he might phone it in until January and move then

Depends if we can get someone in to replace him.

I think he's gone next summer personally.

I think it depends firstly on what Barcelona do in the next 24 hours. If they sign someone else in his place then that's it for him. The dream's dead and even if he still wants to leave Liverpool, his best hope of getting into Brazil's WC squad is playing for Liverpool for a season. Secondly, if Barca still have the space for him, as it were, it'll depend on how each club is doing by the mid-point of the season.

I can't see Barca doing much by this time tomorrow, and I think there's a real fracture in the relationship between player and manager, which I don't think was true for Suarez and Rodgers.

Hoping Barca pull the trigger on this.
I just saw that as of ~2hrs ago The Sun (yeah I know) claims that Barcelona has a £138mil deal with Liverpool and he'll be announced/unveiled/etc at 7pm?

I have no idea what's going on here, but at the very least you figure that one of the reasons Ox went to Liverpool is that he figured Coutinho would be going (as he clearly wants to play #10, even if that isn't necessarily Coutinho's position due jour)

I don't know the board policy on linking to rumors/stories from rags, but if you google search Philippe Coutinho you'll see The Sun story popping right up atop the search results. I hope I didn't find some satirical/parody/troll site that pretends to be The Sun, buy then again many would probably argue that the Sun is enough of a troll/parody site itself!

Could this very well happen if Barca ponies up that kind of dough?

I reckon a lot of these players, Coutinho included, will settle back in after all the fuss has died down.

It was in July 2012 when Pep Segura, then the technical manager at Liverpool’s academy, ended his three-year association at the club after previously being told by Liverpool’s owner, John W. Henry, he had earned a promotion.
Rodgers, though, had other ideas, insisting his own appointment would not involve another tier of management above him. For Segura – a decent man, and someone respected inside Liverpool particularly for his contribution towards the development of Raheem Sterling – there was reasonable embarrassment when he arrived at Melwood for the start of pre-season training only to find out then there would be no place for him in the new set-up.
Now Barcelona’s general manager having returned to the club where he built his coaching reputation, and as the person overseeing player recruitment, it is told he has viewed the signing of Coutinho as a personal mission.

I recall Pep Segura very well, he's been constantly praised for his work at the academy. Always thought he left for a better offer, not because Brenton chased him away, so this is fairly shocking stuff. In a way, I wouldn't even be angry if this man fulfills his personal mission, he's clearly in the right.

Sometimes I feel like there's actually a god, and he's a red devil. Klopp pushing board to make a stance to save his hypocritical hipster arse, Coutinho desperate to leave the merseyside stepping-stone called delusions of grandeur, Neymar saying he's dying from it, AOC for £40m, massive failed deadline day offers for Lemar, none for VVD.

Bring on gegen-pressing fatigue, 95,432 people in the 6-yard box of Maribor and unfair fixture congestion, with a hint of wind!
Oh, and that United offside goal.

Therein lies the difference as Segura has been an unmitigated disaster at Barcelona

It's hard to know who to believe. On the one hand you have pretty much everyone in football saying it won't happen and, on the other, you have Neil Custis saying it's going to happen at 7pm yesterday.

I think the ship has sailed on this one. They are not going to come back with the same bid for a player year older, especially as during the season some new players might emerge as targets, he might have an average season at Liverpool as he's unhappy with staying there, Barcelona might find they don't need him etc. It's very unlikely Liverpool will get the opportunity to receive £120m for him next year.

With my bitter united hat on, I'm hoping he comes back, plays horribly and looks disinterested, gets dropped, disrupts other players, then goes in the summer for less than half (e.g. £45 million) of what Liverpool could have gotten for him now.

I absolutely hope that's what happens.

Sadly I think he'll now knuckle down and get on with it.

In the last month the guy managed to piss off pique and the rest of the team, dortmund, liverpool and i don't remember what else. Every time he opened his mouth in public, it was to stick his own foot in it and embarass the club in the process. Maybe Brenton did good :D

Neymar using some of those media tactics hen picked up in Barcona to try and help force a transfer
It was reported neymar told coutinho not to go to barcelona actually

Begs the question why he signed the extension earlier this year?

Didn't VVD do the same at Southampton?

Two pretty basic reasons. Firstly, it improved his salary and insured him in case of a bad injury between January and the off-season. The other, he and his representatives had no idea that one of the big Spanish two would make move for him, and those were the only teams he would force a move to. He probably doesn't extend his deal if he knew Barca was going to come in for him, at least not one without a buyout.

I must admit his performance isn't exactly as count-of-Monte-Cristo-esque as one would expect

I remember that, Rodgers is a good coach, but he's arrogant beyond belief. You need that to succeed but he hasn't yet. Well in the EPL .

Nope just an incompetent hierarchy. We've had the same problems for years, this is nothing new. Just fresher in the memory.

Expect this'll get done next summer regardless. But by then 'pool will have a replacement lined up anyway. It'll be interesting to see what happens from here, will Coutinho just go straight back into the fold? Surely he just sucks it up and carries on for 12 months?

Henry sounds thoroughly incompetent if the article is to be believed. But then also this Segura chap doesn't sound like a great person to put in charge of player recruitment if he wants to spunk 150m for a personal grudge...

He'll have a strong world cup and Barca will be back in for him in a jiffy.

Incredible player given his back problems. Obviously he heard his countries call and played through the pain.
