Philippe Coutinho

All the pieces are finally falling together. Coutinho’s transfer request was sent in by email. Email – a significant vector for web-based fraud. Another online fraud vector – fake news (not this news though, this is the news that isn’t fake: it’s the real news, or just the news for short). Fake news is big business, especially in Macedonia. Why else has Macedonia been in the (real) news recently? The European Super Cup. What stadium was it played in? The Philip II National Arena (also home to the mighty FK Vardar). What’s Coutinho’s first name? Philippe. Now I admit it’s not yet clear precisely who is a lizard hidden in an elaborately-constructed suit of human flesh, but I’ll bet you a whole lot of money (which doesn’t actually have any inherent value – get this, it’s basically just paper with writing on it!) that two of them are Philippe Coutinho and Philip II, king of Macedon.

It’s just like my cousin Vinnie predicted. Way back when, Vinnie used to live out in Mexico on the Yucatán peninsula. He got pretty into his hallucinogenics out there and after one particularly wild ride on the ayahuasca he wrote some weird manuscripts called the Chilam Bilam. Now his Yucatec was always a lot sharper than mine so I never did get round to reading it, but considering how important this transfer saga is in footballing and astrological terms I can only think that the entire work was centred around this. Anyway there’s lots more to the theory so if you want the rest of it I’ll be wandering around various parks at night talking about it out loud, feel free to follow a few feet behind.

i wasn't expecting him to force it after FSG's statement.

No one denies that he wants to go. It's Barcelona and he wants to win things.

It's not a very high bar to clear, but LFC fans on here seem a lot more reasonable than the Spurs ones.

Of course.

On this hypocrisy thing. Firstly, fans are hypocrites. That's part of the job. Secondly, is it inconsistent to want your players to be loyal while hoping coveted players aren't loyal? I don't think it is. The whole enterprise is to build the best team you can. The hypocrisy comes when fans start to moralise about loyalty when they don't expect it of potential signings.

Sorry, I'm a little drunk so I may be off here, but does this post actually make any sense???

Surely that is the very definition of inconsistent?

Err...

It is a good price but pool shouldn't sell and then look for a replacement. Whoever they are after will cost 100m +. They should see if they can source a deal first for a replacement and if they can't then don't let this happen or delay it one year.

If they get 150m in the bank then every good winger will cost them 150m plain and simple

Weird analogy. I'd regret wasting the money on Coutinho to be honest.

You'd console yourself. The point is, they made so much money that they can afford to blow so much of it and not really suffer financially. They'd still be €70million and Neymar wages in the green. The money they spend is gonna be nothing to do with coutinhos true valuation, it's just a massive case of not giving a feck how much you spend.

Is this true?

That was more the sequence of thought as the story has unfolded.

A couple of weeks ago when there was rumoured Barca interest most were saying he wouldn't want to leave.
My attitude has always been that we wouldn't sell (this summer), not that he wants to stay, loves Liverpool etc.

Reading through Twitter im getting the impression Liverpool fans think Coutinho is acting in bad faith,

Is that not what they have been hoping Van Dijk and Kieta would do all summer ?
Yes

Football fans in being hypocritical shocker

We hated Rooney for wanting to move but most loved berbatov for going on strike to force a move to us

Right on the eve of their first game this season.

Perfect timing Agent Phillipe. The cheque is in the mail.

Liverpool is the most desirable club to be at didn't you know?

What is true? Are you true? Sometimes it's sensible to ask questions like 'who or what even am the truth?'. Look outside, look at a bird. If it's dark, find a book with a picture of a bird. Look into its black eyes. Do they not say: Philippe Coutinho to Barca?

Losing a lot of money due to misfortune is hardly the same as choosing to spend that much on a player who is worth nowhere near it. Is Coutinho really the best player that amount of money can buy?

He wants to leave. They can't hold him hostage. Liverpool will destroy what's left of their reputation if they try to block his move to Barca. €90m including add ons is a fair offer.

On form he's a cracking player. Theoretically should thrive in the Spanish league. I think they'd be hard pushed to find someone better that fits the profile, and can be attained.

This saga has totally passed me by. From reading recent stuff its seems like he does not want to stay at all, however i thought was happy there. Has his mood changed because the Barca carrot is being dangled? or has generally felt like this?

NEVILLE: INEVITABLE COUTINHO WILL END UP AT BARCA
However, fellow Sky Sports expert Gary Neville disagrees, suggesting the lure of Barcelona could prove to be too strong for Coutinho.

"In terms of Coutinho… it’s Barcelona. Quite often when Barcelona and Real Madrid come knocking there’s an inevitability about it and they end up going," he told FNF.

“That’s where I slightly differ from Jamie. If he’s saying there’ll be a riot, you’d better get some police ready.”

CARRA: NO WAY COUTINHO WILL GO
Jamie Carragher
insists there’s no way Liverpool will let Philippe Coutinho leave.

"Liverpool have got no time to replace him. They can’t get players in at the moment anyway and they’ve got a lot of money to spend," he said on FNF.

“I don’t see any way the club would let Coutinho go. I said there’d be a riot if he went and I still stand by that.

“And I’ll be part of that riot!”

Just though i'd post this from the sky website. Apols if its here already

Yeah, they do!

Carragher speaking too much like a fan there, needs to step back and look at it properly. There's no way Coutinho can play for the club again unless he backtracks massively and these stories about tension with Klopp don't look like he's planning on doing that any time soon.

If half of all these rumours is true, Barca are a vile, disgusting bunch. As much as I might dislike Liverpool and as much shadenfreude I'll find in seeing them lose their best player, the way Barcelona's agents are pushing this transfer is unacceptable.
You answered your own statement there

Coutinho knows that if he doesn't go this window, Barca may never come calling again. Everyone and their dog knows that they are absolutely desperate to replace Neymar, and to do so in this window. Barca start their league campaign a week Sunday, and I think if it's not wrapped up by then they'll have moved on to other targets and Coutinho's chance has gone. The problem this then presents Liverpool is that they've not only kept him against his wishes, but potentially cost him his dream move. His head is firmly fixed on the exit, and if he doesn't make it to Barca, and can still see him pushing for a move elsewhere.

Aside from Salah, who isn't the most exciting of signings, Liverpool have signed a teenager released by Chelsea, and a chap that got relegated with Hull. Twice. They've pushed for Keita and been told to feck off, and pushed for van Dijk and been told to feck off. For all the talk of a warchest and the supposed pulling power of Klopp and Champions League football, they've seemingly failed to sign almost every target they've gone after.

Liverpool need to do everything they possibly can to convince Coutinho to stay, but it's looking increasingly like that ship has long sailed. Whatever the outcome of this window, it seems his time at Liverpool has come to an end. One more season of a pissed off Coutinho playing for his place in Brazil's WC squad is about all they can hope for.

If he leaves, I think they're fecked. They've not got the pulling power they thought they'd have. In the past, it's been blamed on poor league finishes, a lack of CL football, or less glamorous managers. They've got Klopp, who's supposed to be one of the game's top coaches, and should qualify for the CL. What's the excuse now?

Their transfer record would also worry me. Klopp's best signings so far have been Mane, Matip and Wijnaldum. I'd say Mane has been good, Matip decent enough, and Wijnaldum okay. They got Matip at the end of his contract, and splashed out near £55 million on the other two. Salah has cost them a further £37 million, and while he's had a good couple of seasons at Roma, his last spell in the PL was unspectacular to say the least. Aside from them, he's brought in Grujic as an unproven youngster, loaned Caulker to play up front, Karius to be shite, Klavan to be old and shite, Manninger to be old and useless, and the two mentioned above. Meanwhile, Toure, Skrtel, Ibe, Allen, Benteke, Balotelli and Lucas have all been shown the door, and Sakho, Can and Coutinho are now clawing at it.

I'm with Liverpool on this one. No one is holding him hostage. 7 months ago he signed a new 5 year contract with no release clause. If he wanted the option to leave asap he shouldn't be making that kind of commitment.

Liverpool have long decided not to sell and so far Coutinho has been with them. A day before the season starts and he wants to ruin their plans for the season? Money doesn't matter if he can't be properly replaced.

I'm not really sure where these accusations of misbehaviour by Barca are coming from. It really wouldn't take Barca to advise the lad for him to see he needed to act, neither do i think Liverpool told VvD to hand in a transfer request. Seems easy journalism to accuse.

Absolutely right.

Players really are incredibly stupid at these 'middle' clubs. What I mean by 'middle' is that Liverpool are clearly a stepping stone to bigger things for ambitious foreign players. I'd put several other clubs in that bracket, including Dortmund who are having similar issues with Dembele. If you are a player at these clubs where secretly you hope to perform really well and maybe get yourself the dream move why would you sign such big contracts? You are literally putting your career in the hands of people who want to block that dream from you.

Sign no more than a 2 year contract at a time and you keep all the power, pretty simple really.

I'm pretty sure coutinho and his agent will have both received multi-million pound signing bonuses for inking that new contract, in addition to the sizeable increase in his wages and other bonuses. I'm also sure he will still get his Barca move this year. The players have all the power. That'll mean more signing bonuses and even bigger wages.

So it is hard to argue this makes players incredibly stupid. Both Coutinho and his reps will probably be close to ten million pounds richer when he leaves Liverpool this month as a result of signing two big contracts in less than one year.
