Glorious to see Liverpool season hit the shitter before a balls kicked.

I'm not sure how Coutinho staying is best case?

He doesn't want to be there. Your season will be hampered by the constant questions, criticism of his performance and well being.

Best case would be sell him and get someone in who wants to play for Liverpool.
Did your season get hampered after the De Gea transfer fell through (although admittedly it wasn't your fault)? Genuine question.

I think things will be just fine once everything has settled after the transfer window, it's a WC year and Coutinho definitely realises that. Could help if we say he can leave next Summer if a reasonable offer comes in.

The issue here is DDG never asked to formally leave or submitted a transfer request.

The club were happy to let him go and for reasons unknown the registration didn't happen. He then decided to stay with us.

In this instance there's clearly alot going on behind the scenes. Klopp won't be happy, Coutinho isn't happy and the dressing room could easily nose dive. It's very messy now everyone have gone public and I don't see a happy ending.

It's glorious

Suarez was told to train with the reserves in the summer of 2013 following a request and an incendiary newspaper interview. He then came back and played the season of his life up to that point.

I can't see the same thing happening again with Coutinho though, I'm intrigued to see how it will pan out however and will unhappily eat my words if it is a repeat.

I am not sure he could afford that given the world cup year.

It is a world cup year, and he may well play brilliantly himself, but what can't be undone now is how this might affect his teammates mentally. The crowd reception will be interesting when they play Watford this weekend (albeit they are away from home so it'll be difficult to judge). What I'm trying to say is that successful teams have happy dressing rooms. No matter how good he plays, he's planted that seed of disharmony within the dressing room and it may grow into something ugly.

With regards to the last bit I don't think it's that simple.

Barca need to replace Neymar now. They won't be around next season. The president simply can't sit on the money when the club and fans are in turmoil. Coutinho knows this and telling him to wait when he won't get the opportunity again will far from appease him.

I'm going to enjoy watching this play out. All the way up until the dying hours of the transfer window when they desperately spunk the majority of the Coutinho money on some dross.

This whole shit storm on the eve of Liverpool's first game definitely makes me more grateful towards De Gea for not handing in a transfer request and treating Utd with respect.

Dave is a legend.

The fans will sing his name out on saturday to try and persuade him. Not make a blind bit of difference though

I don't think his public transfer request will affect team stability, personally. It does cement his departure next year though.

The problem is, he has another 5 years in his contract, right? And the world cup is next year. He will perform, there is no doubt there.

Still think that Liverpool holds all the cards. Being in 2 (or even 3 years contract) gives some power to the player, being in an 1 year contract gives most of the power to player, but on a 5 year contract? He has no choice but to respect Liverpool's decision.

This.

He won't feck up his performances before a WC year, and he can't throw a fit for five years, he will start playing at some time. This will be a huge statement by Liverpool and might attract other players if they do well in the CL and league this season.

I think they will keep him, Pool.

If anything, DDG's feelings towards United would have improved greatly after that whole mess. We gave him what he asked and it was pretty clear the fault laid with Real who seemingly only launched a half-hearted bid at the eleventh hour and even then didn't get it done. That's not the case with Barca, they've bid twice and have clearly told Coutinho to help make it go through.

But I do think that's been Liverpool's tactic in general - we'll let you move but only if you make yourself look like the bad guy.

Has anyone seen what Melwood training ground is like? It's an absolute dump.

Coutinho is dreaming of sunny Barca right now. He's head is turned and there's no going back.

Everyone is putting alot in to the WC year nonsense..

If he plays well for Brazil when he's called up then he'll get game time. He's already got a phantom back injury at the moment and this is only the first real day of fall out from his request. To think this will be a smooth ride for Liverpool is very naive.

Agreed.

He'll probably be sold, Liverpool will buy a couple of players for less than what they get for him, FSG will claim they tried their best.

You could argue the case that if he was sold for say £100m you could possibly find two players in his position who aren't a million miles away from him ability wise for less than half that each.

But I don't know who they are.

It's hard to be pissed off though because Liverpool did the same thing to Southampton and Leipzig.

I don't watch enough European football these days to say but I can't imagine it's that difficult. They got Firmino a couple of years ago for £30m and I'd say he's at a similar level. Mane wasn't far off Coutinho either and they got him for £34m. City got Sane last year for £50m and I wouldn't be remotely surprised if he surpasses Coutinho's level myself. Then they got Bernardo Silva for £60m this summer and I'd argue he's at a similar level already, with every chance of surpassing him. You just need to get find the right clubs. Salah was supposedly one of the best players in Serie A last year and went for £50m. Lacazette was the same.

Going based on WhoScored's ratings (which are rudimentary but generally indicative), you have the following players in similar positions either going for or being available for prices in that bracket and performing exceptionally well just last year:

Serie A
  • Insigne - Napoli - 18 goals and 9 assists - ranked 4th in Serie A
  • Felipe Anderson - Lazio - 4 goals and 9 assists - ranked 6th in Serie A
  • Salah - Roma - 15 goals and 11 assists - ranked 11th in Serie A
Ligue Un
  • Lacazette - Lyon - 28 goals and 3 assists - ranked 1st in Ligue Un
  • Boudebouz - Montpellier - 11 goals and 9 assists - ranked 3rd in Ligue Un
  • Moura - PSG - 12 goals and 5 assists - ranked 9th in Ligue Un
  • Thauvin - Marseille - 15 goals and 8 assists - ranked 11th in Ligue Un
La Liga
  • Ceballos - Betis - 2 goals and 2 assists - ranked 10th in La Liga
  • James Rodriquez - Madrid - 8 goals and 6 assists - ranked 12th in La Liga
Bundesliga
  • Forsberg - Leipzig - 8 goals and 19 assists - ranked 3rd in Bundesliga
  • Derimerbay - Hoffenheim - 6 goals and 8 assists - ranked 7th in Bundesliga
  • Werner - Lepzig - 21 goals and 5 assists - ranked 19th in Bundesliga

All of those players are at a good age too.

Now obviously Thauvin's struggles at Newcastle and Salah's at Chelsea demonstrate that it's not easy to carry that form across to different leagues, but equally the amount Liverpool spent shows they think it's worth the risk.

With Mbappe going to PSG I wouldn't put it past them to bring in someone like Cavani, push Firmino pack, have Mane and Salah on the wings, bring in a defender and go forward as a better team without losing any money. Coutinho is great but he's not irreplacable. They just need to be a bit creative in how they go about doing it.

It's a very dismal transfer window for us. Even if we hold on to him he's likely to move next summer anyway. It feels so frustrating.

THat's the thing if barcelona wont come back for him and throw him out at first opportunity if they get another toy, the actual situation is pretty clear about barcelona's thinking of him about how important he would be at the club.

Regardless of the potential involvement with Brazil - a year before WC year & everything else related; contract scenario, player mentality and mood and anything else relating to this, I just don't care!

Anything that can upset the Liverpool masses as much as this - worth its weight in gold!

You can't be serious
I wasn't, as I already said. Still, I don't think we've been a feeder club to Barça with 2 sales in seven years. They've been one of the three best teams in the world in those seven years, so it's only normal (South-American) players want to move there, and not only from Liverpool.

Surely he's not going to be playing tomorrow now? Awful time to hand in a transfer request 1 day from kick off, but also hilarious that its happening to those lot.

You dont wanna keep a player who wants to leave, but then again, who could replace such a talent?

The closest in terms of style would be Dybala, and hes going nowhere.

Wonder if they'll strike a Ronaldo type deal, stay for one more year, then go.

Not really. They have to be realistic. They have been shafted by PSG and need to get new players in.

Coutinho is not a Neymar, Suarez, Messi, Ronaldo level talent.

It's opportunity knocks for him here. He has to grasp it with both hands.

Already ruled out for tomorrow and a major doubt for Hoffenheim, doubt he'll play the qualifiers either.
