The fact that I still see people putting him on the same level as Smalling and talking about how he's a good defender when fit is so baffling. He's gone from being an average and overrated defender to an absolute disaster and United as a club should be embarrassed that they still pay him a fortune to represent them.
It all goes back to this video.

Not good enough. When has he ever even performed well? DC should look to him to replace Jared Leto.

Ultimately, we've known this for a while - credit to van Gaal and Mourinho though, both managed to hide our defensive deficiencies over four seasons.

Please can we now dispel the ridiculous notion that Phil Jones is an excellent defender when fit? He really, really isn't, and never will be.

I can understand the temptation to keep an injury-prone player if they perform at an excellent level when fit e.g. Ledley King, but Ledley King he ain't.

Wow, what’s your problem? I know English is not your native language but you should be able to see that my LAST post on Jones was six months after those - have you ever heard about having a change of heart?

Bullshit. Its Woodward himself who refused to sell the likes Rojo, Jones and Darmian in the summer nor upgrade them, do to thinking our coach recommended targets 'no better than them'.

Furthermore, anyone who believes any talented young center halves like Bailly or Lindeloff can ever look good consistently alongside the likes of Smalling, Jones, Rojo and inept fullbacks like Valencia is just engaging in willful stupidity.

Because even at City and Pool who people envy their young defenders like Stones and Gomez didn't start looking good until either the fullbacks and or their center back partners were upgraded.

Why on earth would Woodward refuse to sell Rojo or Jones for feck sake? You're talking shite. I can buy Woodward saying no to Mourinho wanting to get rid of Pogba and Martial, I can't see him refusing to sell Darmian.

And if Mourinho had done his homework he'd have known Jones and Rojo and Darmian weren't good enough when he first took the job. They should have been moved on years ago.

Woodward thought defenders Jose wanted are no better than the ones we got.

Out of all his own goal highlights, this one is probably up there as the best. If you catch all the angles of that beautiful finish you realize that the ball was pretty much all the way over in his side of possession and he could have easily just taken a touch with his outside foot and turned it casually. Instead he slots it home nicely.

Well done mate
He does that always. And in some games he gets praise from fans for great game just because of that( "Jones- our warrior"). If you watch better, most of his tackles look much more difficult than they are. Lots of times he is first on the ball and can shield it and pass it. But he throws himself in tackle. Awful defender. But great survivor. He will get new contract. Again.

The funniest thing is all the posters who keep saying there is a good defender in there and injuries have ruined him. The guy is not a good CB. He has a gaff in him most games. He did the same against Fulham at the weekend, switched off towards the end. Overrated and overhyped. The only player I have ever seen who has been at a club for many years and the jury is still out. The club have the ideal opportunity in the summer to get some deadwood off the books. He is one along with Young. Saying that we did give Fellaini a new contract when his expired which was quite scary. All these players have had their opportunity for years. Get them off the books and blood some youngsters

The reason this utter donkey is still here is because of the moronic managers we’ve had who can’t seem to bin him because they don’t have a clue what they’re doing. The only reason our current moron of a manager is in charge is because the guy above him is even more of a complete clown. Then the owners above him couldn’t give a flying feck either. We are rotten to the core.

My point is that Phil Jones is an accident waiting to happen and a couple random good games does not change that.

And your next point will be waters wet or something as stimulating?
Yes he's not good enough to be a nailed on starter at United, but he's a decent squad option and gives his all. People just doing the boring usual stuff and going on and on about an error. It's very tedious.

He's not a decent squad option because we can't even rely on him! Tuanzebe would be a better squad option.

Another one for the album:

Phil Jones can become Manchester Uniteds greatest ever player...

You also need a buyer. I can't see clubs lining up to take him given what he would cost and how often he is fit.

He can leave on free at the end of this season. No need to search a buyer club. He can retire or being a comedian which i dont care as long as he feck off from this club.
Its our lovely incompetent Woodward who will give him extension thats more scarier.

Yeah let's hope not. I don't think Woodward will be in charge of renewals though. Would hope not anyway! Feels like he should be looking at bigger picture than employee contracts.

He is the one in charge because no ones more higher than Jose other than Woodward.

Phil Jones is a very good player on his day. Hopefully can avoid too many injuries and pick up world class form which he can find.

You what? I pissed myself laughing. We are a circus after all.

I gave up laughing at these incidents with our defence long ago. The fa cup final with his challenge against Hazard made me angry but I honestly felt nothing this time or against Spurs early in this season. It’s gone past funny now. The guy had some good qualities and obviously had potential once but it’s beyond a farce now. For his careers sake he needs a new club and we need a new centre back.

Love the fantasy some have created to pin this all on the manager, and the justification is that he's 'better when fit' than Jose's buys which is ludicrous. Jones is a disaster when he is fit, regularly costing us games.

Lindelof and Smalling were building some momentum, only for both of them to get injured. That is the only reason this liability is playing (and of course the board's refusal to bin the likes of Rojo and Jones and get in a new defender).

Our hierarchy thinks Alderweireld isn't an upgrade on this clown. Feck me.

I never mentioned Tuanzebe or Blind, and I never discussed them with the poster you quoted. You responded to my post, where I lay the blame on Mourinho playing Jones. And you responded by saying "none of them are good enough"

You're confused it seems... @haram

What does that have to do with everything?

I said your comments didn't appear lately, but during his good form which was almost one year ago, and then I searched for your posts praising him and those were coincidentally from that period, and would eventually happen again once we face shit opposition, you will come here saying same shit again how he is usually good when fit and better than our other CBs.

Awful player nowadays. Injuries ruined any chance he ever had at developing and for that, I sympathize with him.

Need to cut ties with him asap. Although, it is likely that all of himself, Smalling, Young, and Valencia get new contracts as that is just how bad our club is run. In which case we may truly be finished. We hang onto players that are not good enough for years after their expiration date.

Every year we say well they will only be squad players and every year they continue to start and cost us games. Similar to the Fellaini situation. We could have let him go yet everyone argued he is a good Plan B or C, which is true. However, he always weasels his way back into the starting lineup and then is played as a midfielder? It is insanity.

Anyways, back to Jones and there really isn't much more that needs to be said. He is simply not good enough. Cost us the FA cup final last season as well. Really think we ought to tell these players to they got 6 months to find a new club cause Manchester United isn't for them.

Every time he's on the field i expect him to make atleast 1 or 2 mistakes. How is he at our club i cannot fathom. Shows the ambition of the club.

If we are all agreed that he is done here, then, looking back, was he (a) ruined by injuries or (b) physically precocious as a teenager and never actually that talented?
