Can't believe we kept him and sold Evans and blind. Ed Woodward is mental.

Ah football fans.

In 10 years, when Jones is finally shipped out, there will be someone saying
"Can't believe we bought xxx and let Jones go"

It boggles the mind when someone can talk of Bailly as a disaster and not say the same for Jones. Jones takes the no nonsense approach so far that he comes off as fearful. Bailly does the opposite, he has no fear and takes ridiculous risks. Both play without control but in a different state of mind.
Bailly has been far worse than Jones since the start of last season, as seen by the fact that both Mourinho and now Ole have quickly moved Jones ahead of him.

Jones has been good for the majority of the games that he has played in that time, with an unfortunate amount of decent matches with one or two big mistakes, and the occasional shocking match. Bailly has been (and I'm being very kind here) 50/50 between good and atrocious.

I think its pretty clear that the club rates Jones a lot higher than posters here, assuming he had a pay rise with his new contract

And that's a problem. He's being rewarded for being a professional patient. I'd rather keep Bailly and sell the joker

Bailly a deer in headlights? Bailly can be many things but that "deer in the headlights" is a spot on description for Phil Jones type of defending. Bailly hasn't managed a run of games due to whatever reason, but has demonstrated that he can be very good CB and I'd rather keep him than Jones who's been here forever and always managed to stay the same calamity CB. I sincerely can't remember as much high profile mistake by Bailly. I do remember his own goal against Pool last season, but in the same time he was great in everything Pool threw at us. Jones on the other hand, Christ you can make a movie of his howlers.

:lol::lol::lol::lol: Yes, Deer in headlights.

As I already said, that's a perfect description for Phil. He barely manages to do anything without slipping and falling, and everything seems such an effort for him. Bailly can be headless but mostly is very determined and looks confident in what he is doing, whether that is right or wrong.

It is also pretty clear that the club have gone for the much easier and far CHEAPER option of renewing a very average footballer player's contract (on a ridiculously long contract considering his ability/availability due to lack of play/injuries), instead of having to go on the open market, spending endless millions for a new defender, plus increased wages.

I am sure he is a nice lad and all, but Mr Phillip Jones should be nowhere near the front line of a club like Manchester United.

He will retire a multiple multi-millionaire many times over, and this alone shows the stupidity of money available in today's game, even for very average players.

He is only here because he is a loyal servant, doesn't kick up a fuss (partly because he knows he is not good enough, and would have to move down in terms of club choice if United were to let him go). Happy to take home his pay and be a squad player. Nice guy basically, keeps his head down most of the time.

Essentially he is just like your average Everton player. Mid-table, is alright, but nowhere near the quality required to be a Manchester United first choice centre-half pairing.

Spot on. Some of our players must say a little pray before bedtime and occasionally pinch themselves that they are at the club during this era that allows them to still be here. If he was wearing an Everton shirt and out of contract this summer, there is no way we'd be signing him so why the feck did we give him a new contract....

He isnt at the front of the line though. Smalling and Lindelof are. He's first alternative currently because Bailly has performed so poorly.

And it doesnt mean we wont sign a defender. Surely we're letting Rojo go since he's even training with his former club in Argentina so we have space for 1 more in the squad. Not sure it'll be what people consider a top, high profile CB though given our wage situation

Bailly hasnt been very fit either and Jones has played better

Played better? He plays 1-2 good games, plays like shit on the third, scores an OG or contributes towards a goal for the opposition in some kind of way on the fourth, and then goes back to his sick bed or rightfully gets dropped. He hasn't shown any improvement in over 7 seasons here. Bailly is still a young player, Jones has ridden that card for way too long.

Yes Jones has played better. Thats why he plays more often, gets a new contract and higher wages. What more proof do you need?

Jones has been good with some cock ups mostly in big games where ideally we'd pick our first choice partnership instead.

Bailly has been cocking up in even the easy games. He hasnt proven useful for anything

Bailly is 24 with an upside, Jones is a permacrock who wouldn't get into any top 6 side in the PL. He's a parody of himself and a joke among many football fans, United and opposition alike. He's only here because the club are fond of him, one of Fergie's remaining signings. LVG should've gave it to him straight like he did Rafael. He's done a great job stealing a living i'll give him that

Jones isint a great player, but is a darn sight better than Bailly - who seems to live off the fact he’s athletic. If that was the only criteria, we might as well have signed Usain Bolt.

He gets into our side when Smalling or Lindelof are unavailable.

Bailly doesnt get into our side without Jones also being injured. The up side is we have better CBs we can rely on more than him. Maybe one day a light bulb comes on and he isnt crazy and reckless.

Bailly is more than just an athletic player, his technique, overall footwork and passing ability is better than Jones. He just needs to get his shit together but when United signed him he had very little first team experience.

All Jones injuries make people forget how good he can be when he plays. He is good with the ball and can tackle very well. Fairly strong in the air although not as good as smalling. Has often played in our better runs of form during the last few years. Like all players he has made some errors, but people here tend to only remember them it seems. While they let it go with other players very quick.

His injury record is a problem though, but I see no reason not to keep Jones. Many other areas we need to improve rather than central defense for us. I would sell Rojo and keep the other 4 and look to bring in some fullbacks.

Jones is the better passer

It doesn't show the quality of the passing though. Although Jones is generally quite good with the ball so I don't understand why people complain about him in that area. He doesn't do the David Luiz cross passes though, but those balls often don't work anyway.

Yeah of course. Ramos is another who will ping long passes out to a right winger. None of our CBs do that.

Now that you mention it... Dont they both play those passes from the LCB position to the right winger near the touchline?

We dont play a right winger. I was going to say surely Lindelof should be adding that to his game but... Yeah we dont have a right winger we have an extra central player so he probably cant do that and neither would Luiz or Ramos for us if we dont have one.

His passing ability is certainly not better than Jones’.

Fair enough, I haven't given Jones enough credit for his passing, but I still think Bailly has the better technique and overall ability on the ball. Bailly's passing stats were much better in his first and best season

Yeah I think Bailly's strength on the ball is his dribbling more than his passing. Both are useful.

Phil seems like a nice fella but it's a road to nowhere with him at United. We have seen the good, the bad and the injured. It's a cycle, whatever your thoughts on Phil are, you can't deny that he can't relied upon for a long period of time. It's been a cycle at the club with him, maybe a different level and new start would suit all. I just don't see any growth going forward, it's mad Fergie had the choice of him and Varane at the time. It wasn't obvious at the time but time hasn't been kind on that choice.

Man Utd 2:1 West Ham
Good today. Mistimed one header but given the shambles around him in terms of shape, the inadequacy of the full backs, the lack of protection from midfield, I thought he did ok, battled throughout, flaws and all.

Played brilliant. He’s not the best and has his faults but he’s a warrior and puts his head or foot in where most don’t. Played well today very solid

Did well today for most of the time although it was not his best game. Sometimes him and Smalling did try to go for the same ball which could have hurt us more. Warrior in the end to try to keep on playing with blood in his face.

Normally Jones is very good with the ball, but he didn't really do much with it today. Maybe due to our attack and midfield not working well too . I guess we just didn't play well in attack from any areas at all.

Good performance and showed a lot of character when he got that gash above his eye and we werent putting the ball out so he could get treatment, so despite leaking blood all over the place he got up and won the ball and cleared it so he could get his own treatment. I feel like most of our CBs would have just stayed down, playing the opponents onside, until the game is stopped... And that could have had bad results

He literally calmly popped the ball over one of their heads to play it out of our box, if another player did that the internet would break. It is also hard to play the ball out when we play with only one midfielder.

Agreed. They're not Rio/Vidic but don't get the stick him and Smalling get on here.

Good performance from him today, especially the clearance in front of Balbuena. Smalling and Jones have looked much more assured under Solskjaer.

They have been here the longest, the tail end of the good and all the bad years. Fans always looking for players who would improve on them, which is why over the years Blind, Rojo, Bailly and latterly Lindelof have all been called our best CB at various stages, people want it to be true and when it isn't it is not just the failed upgrade that inspires ire.

Familiarity breeds contempt basically.
