Would be great if Mourinho brought Gary and Rio here even in a minor role of his team. Their presence would be enough. :)

Rio and Gary aren't stupid enough to be standing on the 'wrong' side when Ferguson's vitriol hits the fan (tbc). Shrewd move by Jose to start building a buffer zone now though.

Shrewd move for Rio if true

Yeah, but I have my doubts he'd take it for perfectly valid reasons. The pundit job means he isn't away from his children for a lengthy spell. I guess he has to keep that in mind and perhaps we'd see him get into coaching when they a bit older.

Sorry, could you explain that bolded part.

Why would he be away from his kids if he was to join the coaching staff at United?

Are they not settled in Manc area, or have they moved to London?

I love Rio. Such an inspirational character. Would be a great influence on everyone in the club if joined.

He is a single parent.

Still devasting when I think of what Rio has been through the past year.

Aye, I knew about his wife passing. Weird to be so sad for a guy you've never met.

I thought you meant about the commute. Aye, I suppose coaching would be a bit more time consuming, but I mean he's going it at 9 and leaving at around 3 I guess? His kids would be in school then.

I think it would be a no-brainer for him to take the job. But like someone less mentioned, I don't remember him getting his coaching certs. So could be bullshit all together.

What? I'm talking the treatment Neville brothers gave to Reyes and Pires specifically.
What I was very obviously saying was you can name any match and say one team was more physical than the other. Arsenal, keown and viera in particular were no saints and we're the hard men in a team full of flair. Don't go thinking all the arsenal players were fairies.

Just like we had Keane / vidic etc mixed with flair like Ronaldo

great to see that JoMo can see beyond Giggs to help him connect with the club and insert Fergusonian values into his staff.

I think Rio would do very well as he'd 'a lad' who also knows how to train and compete at the very highest levels.

I like the idea of Jose having some senior/former players actually on his side and not having them all trying to undermine him in the press. Get Neville in as well.

Why the feck would we need Rio on a salary to teach our players how to defend? Just get some videos of Jagielka.

I had a long debate with a few United fans who were calling him defensive and I didn't believe that to be the case. So i looked up his stats:

Actually those goal numbers in England are nothing outstanding. His average at Chelsea is about 70 goals per season. Under SAF we were regularly scoring in the mid 70s and often well into the 80s. The best United teams under SAF were scoring well into the 80s whereas the highest a Jose managed team in England has managed is 73.

I mean I don't see what's so controversial in saying that Jose is a defense first coach. Its his style.

Good thing for Jose is that after watching VG football, even Jose football will seem like free flowing attacking football to the fans.

Rio is a winner and would be able to relate to young and old alike, and his playing days are still fresh in the mind to most players.

Having said I can't see this happening. Rio seems to have plenty on his plate away from football and he turned into an enjoyable pundit. I don't think he'd that up just to be another one of Jose's coaches.

Yes that was the point. Jose is a defense first coach (more so against better/big teams). But he's not as defensive/negative as he's made out to be.

Rio would automatically raise the morale of the dressing room and be a guiding light for the youngsters.

Maybe he could teach Rojo a thing or two about defending as well.

The way United parted with Rio was discusting. He'd want an apology from Woodward, but I'm sure he wouldn't let bitterness get in the way of an unbelievable opportunity to work under Jose.

could say the same about ibrahimovic coming in and swap rojo for Rooney and defending for attacking.

Yeah. Also just the amount of goals doesn't tell the whole story. Of course his teams have scored goals, otherwise he wouldn't have had that many titles.

But in his case it's not just Barca he has been defensive against. Especially in the last few years in the league alone he has been playing ultra cautious against a few teams.
I mean City and Liverpool came to us under Moyes and hammered us 3-0. Jose came for a draw. Yes, it was the beginning of Moyes ' United career but Jose knows exactly that Moyes has never been an attacking coach. Still so much caution? Why?
Also I can't imagine United fans being happy if at OT in a CL semi when we need to score we start with 6 defenders. He drew at the Calderon 0-0. Any score draw would have put Atletico through. So what was he even trying by starting so defensively? It backfired completely and he lost 1-3.

Then I can also not imagine OT being happy if PSG come and get a player sent off in 30 something minute and all our team does after that is just try to defend.

Same happened when he played City in the league and Zabaleta got sent off with half an hour to go and he went defensive and ended up conceding the equaliser.
There are no stats which will show stuff like that. I can accept it against a couple of teams every season, but playing like a complete underdog against any half decent team when you are Manchester United would be just too much.

I am of the opinion he would have won a CL or at least come closer since 2010 if he had shown a bit more attacking intention every time he faced a good team.
