I agree - but Neuer has virtually the same defence playing in front of him most games.

No, he hasn't had that luxury due to injuries and Guardiola's tactical changes (playing with 3 at the back then changing it sometimes mid games to a back 4). Saying that he made more individual mistakes than De Gea this season isn't true either - the only match where he no doubt should have done better was Gladbach (I don't think he's to blame for any of the Barca goals). For what it's worth I agree that De Gea has been the better shot stopper this season (and probably is the better talent), mainly because he's had much more opportunities to shine, but I feel Neuer's shot stopping abilities are somewhat underrated by some.

Dante/Boateng/Rafinha have all racked up around 25 games this season. Alaba was also prominent until his injury recently. They've had nowhere near the problems United have had in defence. Smalling is the only player to reach close to that (22). We've also been forced to play a youngster for 15 games!

Tell me a mistake De Gea has made individually this season that cost us a goal? - like the Neuer/Gladbach goal.

That doesn't change the fact that he hadn't had the same defenders in front of him for most of the matches (which you implied); there has always been rotation.

There was one. I'm 100% sure.

Nowhere near the rotation United have had to deal with.

Are you going to give an example? I genuinely want to know.

Have been searching for it, sorry. :) I meant the one in the match against Aston Villa.

Fairly close range power shot from a corner? Granted he could have done better but i don't think its as bad as the Neuer goal.

Going to get heat but heres my 2 cents about his perfomance this week...

- he shouldnt be beat near post for the first goal
- Messi is chipping the keeper in 8/10 situations like the second goal. He could have made it a bit harder for him.
- he did nothing for Neymars goal, just stood there.

Its super critical I know, but hey if we are going to call him A GOAT then he needs to be better.

Totally agree.

Spot on.

Agree with this. Saw the first goal and thought "Keeper Error" but maybe I'm being unusually harsh.

Isn't Neuer the one who got slapped by a woman on camera? I remember seeing it a few years ago but not sure if that was him.

Oh, nonsense.

Messi has so much time and space for the first one, he'll score that every time. Hard shot, well placed, and Neuer's vision is obstructed.
Neuer's reaction for the second goal is textbook. He makes himself big to cover the most dangerous routes to goal, high to the near post and low across goal. Messi then beats him with a sublime chip.
And lastly, a top striker will score the third goal. The angles don't favour Neuer at all, he can make himself as big as he wants, Neymar will have a clear shot regardless.

I get that some people don't like him, but this is just silly.

I agree. I think Neuer's kicking was woeful against Barça as I said already, which gifted them back possession too easily. That aside I thought he was very good though, some great saves and nothing he could have done about the goals.

His kicking wasn't great but he was great coming off the line to cut off dangerous balls. Great anticipation and reading of the game.

I am watching football since 1990. To me Neuer is the best keeper I have ever seen.

Is he making mistakes? Of course. Kahn did. Van der Sar as well. Just as Preud'homme, Zubizareta, Zenga, Cech, Casillas, etc. In my opinion nearly no one was as constant as Neuer was over his last years, starting at Schalke. No one was as hard to beat one on one. And nearly no one defined goalkeeping the way he did, for example by bringing back the good old position of a libero.

I like him - but you are making excuses, he should have done better with every goal - in particular the 2nd and 3rd. For someone that is supposed to be great on one-on-ones, they both go straight through him like he was a ghost.

Claiming he's the best of all time after a 0-3 loss in a high profile game is rather odd though. He was excellent and not at fault for any of the goals, but it's simply the wrong time to start that discussion and it was always going to lead to silly criticism.

I don't get the need to call a player the greatest of all time (in his position or in general) before he turned 30 anyway. As if there's nothing more to achieve, makes no sense to me.

Love how Henry flipped out at him there. What an absolute cnut.

Another reason I rate DDG (and this might be the goalkeeper geek in me)...how often he holds shots and catches the ball.
So underrated IMO and puts DDG on a level above many of his rivals.
Alleviates all pressure and kills attacks.
The amount of goalkeepers for who punching and parrying is now the default even when they should just catch the ball is a joke.
One of the reasons I'm not impressed by that neuer one man show video from his Schalke days.
Any danger of holding a shot?

All 3 goals werent his fault. With a bit of luck he could have pulled of one of those magic saves. But he already used that account quite a bit when he kept us in the game.
How long do you watch football? "Just stood there" yeah right.
Redknapp made that comment at half time. When Man Utd was the miracle man. When you then get 3 goals because of your teams mistake and the greatness of Messi all praise gets attacked.
And thats just not fair. Neuer had a good game. No problems with the ball on his feet(some here just make stuff up).
15 minutes more with that 0:0 and the world would celebrate one of the great keeper perfomances(Im sure).

He is a great keeper, but DDG is in with a shout for best keeper currently. Neuer has it nice in Germany where most teams can't even get the ball into Bayerns half. Must be nice. "Another clean sheet"

To be fair, Neuer does that too. He's gotten way better at catching the ball (especially crosses) since his Schalke days.

They have actually lost four in a row now conceding seven goals.

Three, the loss to Dortmund in the cup counts as a draw. And to be fair, we fielded a B-team against Leverkusen and were with 10 men for 80 minutes against Augsburg and had already won the league before those two matches. No way we were at full strenght. We still conceded seven goals though.

A loss counts as a draw. Interesting. I think that England should apply for a share in some of those World Cups that we competed in!

Technically it counts as a draw when a team goes out on penalties. Or did I get that wrong?

I was being facetious! But I am not sure if it does or does not.
It does. In a knock out match, if the 120 minutes end with a draw, then the game is a draw. A team then qualifies or is eliminated, but the match will not be a loss for the team that... loses the penalty shoot-out.

Which is why there were a few WCs where England went out without losing a match :D

Going out in a penalty shootout in a knockout game is a loss. It's different in sports betting for various reasons and in FIFA/UEFA rankings, but if anyone tells me that we didn't lose the CL final in 2012, I question his sanity.

Dea Gea cant be as good or better then Neuer. He is 24, Man Utd is 29.
Neuer is of the highest talent class. So De Gea cant be as good currently. When he is 27, 28 we can talk.
Till then its a bit laughable to claim that he is good or even better.

GOAT goalkeeper? Nah. Still has the occasional error in him. Not saying the others didn't but Neuer, although excellent, hasn't yet reached the heights of a peak Buffon IMO.

Buffon is up there with the greats of greats of keepers though.

Despite the plaudits he has gotten over the years, I feel he is still underrated.

Agree. I was in school when he made his club/Italy debut. I'm Now a fully grown man and he is still playing, number one for best club in Italy and CL semi-finalists, as consistent as ever. Unreal.

I think he's the best ever. Already achieved everything he can as a keeper. Won the World Cup, was the best player at that World Cup, won the Champions League, multiple league titles, top three in the Ballon d'Or and most importantly has changed the standard of keeping both in the brand of keeping and quality of keeping. No one else I'd rather have in history between the sticks.

Agreed. But Redknapp said Neuer is the GGOAT iirc. Hence I mentioned, Buffon is an all time great & Neuer, IMO, hasn't even reached his level yet.
