Injury prone is an odd overused term. If his injuries were of the reoccurring nature I'd be worried but they're all completely unrelated. His latest was a shoulder dislocation, another one was just bruising around the knee, he had a hamstring injury in his first season along with a hairline fracture on his ankle.

There's no long-term concerns there at all, only one was muscular. Certainly nothing to suggest he's going to have an injury ridden career.

 yeah the twins aren't injury prone!

Twin starts game - 65minutes later - Twin goes off injured. Repeat for every single game.

I've met more durable daddy-long-legses.

Injury-prone doesn't necessarily mean that he has a weak ankle or a bad shoulder like Robson did

But even Ferguson has said that their playing style is contributing to their injuries - they are throwing themselves into tackles and they often end up with a yellow card or an injury. This makes them injury-prone - and they will probably learn at some stage - but it might take a while!

Yeah I agree with that, I just disagree with labelling rafael as someone who can't be relied upon in the future as he's susceptible to injuries. There's been a snowballing myth that rafael comes off every game or get's yellows all the time, neither are particularly true. He started 26 games last season and he got 2 yellows and 1 red.

The claims are much more true of his brother who has a worse record coming off injured as well as receiving more cards. In fact I think it doesn't help they kind of mould together a little

Twins in general, including our Da Silva variety, are genetically prone to injury as when the zygote splits into two embryos, only half of the cellular regeneration properties are transferred to each embryo. This results in more injuries for each twin in their lives (as well their hair, fingernails and teeth will tend to grow slower). It's a scientific fact, and the main reason I was so vehemently opposed to signing a set of twins in the first place. Please note that I am not a doctor and the book I obtained these facts from may or may not have been legitimate. Nothing about this on the internet. Pseudoscience.

@ForeverUnitedRI has said on twitter we have agreed a deal in principle to sign Nathaniel Clyne:

"We have agreed a deal in principle with Nathaniel Clyne for him to join United in the Summer. Out of contract with Palace, fee around 2/3m"

does anyone know how reliable this guy is?

Sensible signing IMO.

Seems like such an apt signing right now given our recent transfer policy. Hopefully he is another player in the Chris Smalling mould who will seamlessly fit in, assuming he has actually signed.

Got a friend who's a Palce fan who has been raving about Clyne for a couple of years, he's convinced that, long term, it's between Walker and Clyne for England

Why should there be a fee if he's out of contract?

This guy on twitter has went onto say that 'Jordi Alba is the next target to replace Evra'. I am curious to know how much ITK he really is?

Is our type of signing but yeah - looking at the Twitter account doesn't sound 'itk'.

A few Palace fans I know, seemed to think that we had agreed some sort of deal in January for Clyne.

If we are in for him, it would be a good signing even at £2-3m. He has played in 130 games and he only turns 21 in April. He also fits it with the sort of players that we have been signing recently.

We are definitely looking at signing a right back this summer, but I'd think we'd be after someone more experienced to compliment rafael's youth and potential.

Exactly. Whenever we've been in Palace's situation we've got £300,000 - £500,000 for our players.

Is there not something about their status within their particular club too though? Clyne having made so many appearances would presumably raise his figure higher than if it was a 20 year old kid knocking around their reserves. As it's a compensatory payment I think appearances and the players status are taken into account. Pretty sure I read this at some point, with regards to compensation for under-23's. I could be wrong about the appearances bit, but there are definitely things that raise the compensatory fee. Is there not a panel who decide on the amount of compensation?

Would that really be as much as 2-3 Million?

I think that they United aren't even allowed to approach him until May. Something to do with the FA. But teams outside the country can.

The fee depends on the contract he's on I think. Sounds a bit much.

According to himself the Clyne bit was from a guy who knew a guy who knew Clyne. So if he's talking about Alba he's propelling shit by using his online mouth.

Might be true. Most players in Iceland sign contracts with clauses in them that say if a team abroad approaches them they are allowed to negotiate. It's not exactly known to people that aren't dealing with transfers directly. Breiðablik (an Icelandic team) got a lot of money, by Icelandic standards, when Gylfi was sold from Reading to Hoffenheim. He joined them when he was 15 and by definition is a home grown Reading player and trained in England yet I know for a fact that the transfer got Breiðablik more money than any other transfer has directly.

Yep. I've read the same.

Crystal Palace co-chairman Steve Parish talked about the issue of Nathaniel Clyne and compensation a couple of months ago:

EAGLES chief Steve Parish admits Nathaniel Clyne could leave Crystal Palace before the end of the month as the defender is still refusing to sign a new contract at Selhurst Park

Manchester United, Newcastle, Fulham and Aston Villa have all been linked with the England U21 international this month and Parish says the club would not be able to turn down any offer that met their valuation of the player.

"Nathaniel won't sign a new contract. I have offered him a very lucrative one and I can't force him to accept it," said Parish. "His agent has got Nathaniel running his contract down."

Should Clyne leave in the summer, Palace will get compensation as he is under 24 and came through the youth ranks. Parish will demand as much as possible for a player who has been tipped to go on and play for the senior England team.

"The situation is out of our control because we didn't give him his last contract as it was before the new consortium bought the club," said the chairman. "The thinking before was to give him a three-year deal and then they'd be entitled to compensation.

"That is something we will have to look at as and when someone makes us an offer this month or in the summer. We will expect to get a good deal in compensation. He is one of the best young players in the country and we'd expect to get something from a tribunal that would reflect that for a young player, plus all the add-ons.

"Nathaniel plays fantastically for us and we will get good money when he leaves. The way things have been done is not great but right now he is in the form of his life. He gives 150 per cent for us and if he sees out his contract, there is not much more you can ask for."

Not sure if it'd be as much as £2-3m but it would be a decent amount.

In 2010-11 he appeared in every single league game. In total he has over 100 appearances for them which is impressive considering he's just 20 years old. He signed his first professional contract in 2008 but I don't know whether he's been there longer than that or not. That will have an impact too.

He's appeared for his country in the U19s and U21s, is expected to challenge Walker for the right back slot in the long term and is also on the long-list for the GB Olympic Team squad. He's achieved so much at such a young age and that will all be taken into account when compensation is decided.

I don't understand why we need a right back. We have Rafael and between him and Fabio they should be able to make that slot their own and if both are injured we have capable cover. If we are looking at any defenders they should be LBs, Evra hasn't been his usual self, is getting on and I don't see Fabio on the left TBH.

Probably because we have Fabio to play on the left and the left is way harder to come by so it's easier to get a 2nd right back. IMO we only need a 4th full back and our defense is fine.

Rafael is a right back, Fabio has played more often on the right than left in the last 18 months, Jones had his best spell on the right or in midfield. Smalling can cover the position but is clearly better at CB. If Evans can play left back he can certainly play right.

With Fabio being the most injury prone and Evra's form, clearly the left should be priority. But I think I read before that Clyne can play there, even if he's clearly more of a right back.

Does he play left-back too? *I'm pretty sure I saw him play left-back for one of the England youth teams at some point, and can vaguely remember reading something where he said he was comfortable playing there too*. Maybe he's one of these players who can cover either side, a la Denis Irwin. Would be good having a couple of full-backs equally adept at playing either side in Fabio and Clyne, as cover for our first choice full-backs.

*I await your confirmation of this Damien.

He'd be a good buy and from what I (well okay from what FM tells me) he can play on both sides, which is a very good trait imo. Definately has a bright future.

Yep, Soccer Manager also says the same thing.

But as for something a bit more solid...

You are correct. It was his first U21 cap in fact:

Clyne, who regularly plays at right-back for his club, was given a chance a left-back following injuries to Nathan Baker and Joe Bennett, but says he’s happy to play anywhere as he eyes another cap against the Belgians.

“I didn’t really expect to start, but due to injuries I got myself in there,” said the former England U19s player. “I worked hard in training to try and get myself into the team and I grabbed it with both hands. Hopefully I have done enough to secure a place for the next game.

“I can do a job at left-back but I am predominantly a right-back. It’s always good to have another position under your belt and if called upon I can always do a job at left back, no problem.”

Last paragraph is key and corroborates what you remember reading. He's predominantly a right back and prefers to play there, but can also play at left back too.

And I agree it is useful to have another versatile full back, just like Fabio is, and Rafael has played at left back once or twice too.

I would doubt if I saw England v Belgium under-19's on the telly, so I must have just read it somewhere. Cheers Damo.

Edit: it wasn't the Belgians he played there against I see, reading it again. Who was it against Damien? Could I have seen it on the telly or did I just read it somewhere?

It was Iceland U21. Mentions it in the article.

Crystal Palace fans talk about his performance here: http://www.cpfc.org/forums/archive/index.php/t-226467.html

They talk about both the Iceland and Belgium game there. He played left back in both. The match you saw may have been another one but not sure if he's played for the U21s other than those two matches so the match you're thinking of may have been for the U19s.

Good man Damien.

If he can play both left and right back then it sounds like a good move to me. He's looked handy when I've saw him, is young and English. And for £2-3mil he's a decent price too.
