Les Sealey - Luton
Mal Donaghy- Luton

depends how you classify a 'small' team?

Amazing to think they formed the best defence of the 90's

Sealey: 6'1
Donaghy: 5'11

No really tall folk outside of Pallister, but I wouldn't call them small, either.

best fullback in my lifetime

Denis was an absolute class act without ever appearing to be great. I mean, if you saw him playing for the opposition you'd hardly notice he was on the pitch. Not many United fans understood the wisdom of his signing at the time. What a gem SAF plucked out. One of his very best signings.

I am not saying that we aren't gonna buy Nathaniel Clyne - but historically, we aren't exactly known for buying players from the lower divisions are we ?

How many have we signed since the P.L started almost 20 years ago ? Dion Dublin, Jon Greening, Luke Steele, Ben Foster, Roy Carroll and Graeme Tomlinson ... anyone else ?
Not counting players we signed whose team got relegated like 2 weeks before we signed them (like Alan Smith)

So if I haven't forgotten anyone .. (I probably have) - we have signed one established outfield player from the lower divisions in 19 years. So historically - we are not signing Nathaniel Clyne

Lee Sharpe (Torquay)

Never have a bad day. Probably the most consistent player ever.

Best United fullback in my lifetime. But not THE best Ive seen.

Well the likes of Cafu and Carlos definitely have a case here, out of modern day players Alves is probably the best but he plays so high up the pitch that you can't really place him next to Irwin and compare both. I quite like Lahm too and he is equally good on both flanks, Evra is top notch when he is on fire. Zambrotta used to be very good five or six years ago.

defo the best United fullback i've ever seen (and we've had some great ones!)

and i'll tell you what, people probably underate Irwin when they mention the likes of Cafu etc

Irwin had it ALL
consistency, play off either foot, comfortable on both flanks, could head, could tackle, had pace, had defensive discipline, knew when to attack, a brilliant crosser of the ball, deadly accurate on penalties and as good a free kick as Beckham

and Fergie picked him up from Oldham for less than a mill!

Cafu was amazing, he was still top notch at 35 when he played for Milan, he was top class.

Another left back that was probably underrated was Serginho, a bit of a late bloomer as he enjoyed his best spell at Milan well after he turned 30 but he was really good.

You think Serginho stands comparison with Cafu and the likes? surprising

He doesn't, he was the class below but still a very good player who was never recognised as good as he was. He was a winger turned into a defender from what I remember.

Yeah, he was, but I don't remember him being anything more than average as a full back.

Thank God. Hopefully this will put an end to the Smalling/Jones filling in at right-back (not that they aren't good there).

Does seem like a Fergie signing. Young, talented and still can improve a lot.

Not great news for the twins mind.

Next season... Clyne/Rafael fighting for RB, Fabio/Evra LB, and Jones/Smalling/Vidic/Evans (with kids in reserve) for CB.

Rio to be put out to pasture.

Not so happy about this signing, for one thing I don't think he's as good as Rafael potential wise. Can see why the club is signing him though, makes sense.

A quite good mate of mine is a lifelong Palace fan. I asked him about Clyne and he reckons that he's a bigger prospect than Zaha and could go on to be England's starting RB. His main weakness according to this mate is his lack of height.

Based ENTIRELY on this (I can't remember whether he played against us or not in the CC) if we can get him for whatever compensation the board that does this kind of thing awards Palace (it's usually < 5 million) it would be a good but of business.

One thing I'll say is that our record of signing English Players has been brilliant under Fergie.

I've heard the same, and he's a rational lad rather than a blinkered fanboy supporter.
