Nathaniel Clyne | Signed for Liverpool

we have very very rarely ever signed a "proven world class talent", so if that is what turns him on, he really should consider switching support to City or Madrid

United have always been about developing young players

Erm that's out of point isn't it? What I said is that since Clyne falls under the value category Id rather believe this rumor then some rumor linking us with Higuan or another estabilished world class player.

. But I think it genuinely annoys him as well to see us sign a Jones instead of a sniejder.

Honestly? No. I think that this year we made some shrewd signings. De Gea and Jones are two future great players with ample potential while Young is very versatile and would close the gaps. I would also like the club to sign Clyne because we need a promising full back to keep the Da Silva + Evra on their toes.

What I am pissed off is our insistence in not addressing the CM problem. However that's a separate issue which shouldn't be discussed in this thread.

Not to forget that an unknown Brazilian kid who was frozen out from Flamengo's team had a fantastic debut season with us scoring against Arsenal in the process

Whos is this mystery player that you speak of?

Rafael, who came from Fluminese? Why would he have played for the first team, he was 18 when he joined us and the deal was put in place for the transfer a year or two before that. I reckon that it is rather normal for a 17 year old not be playing for the first team, but forzen out? That is a bizarre claim.

Him and Fabio was denied playing for the Fluminense first team, because of the agreement with United. The brazilians didn't want to use players who'd be gone in a year. It was widely reported.

Ok fluminese my mistake.

I remember an old SAF interview saying that Fluminese gave the twins the cold shoulder after they signed a pre contract deal with us.

I am not saying that we aren't gonna buy Nathaniel Clyne - but historically, we aren't exactly known for buying players from the lower divisions are we ?

How many have we signed since the P.L started almost 20 years ago ? Dion Dublin, Jon Greening, Luke Steele, Ben Foster, Roy Carroll and Graeme Tomlinson ... anyone else ?
Not counting players we signed whose team got relegated like 2 weeks before we signed them (like Alan Smith)

So if I haven't forgotten anyone .. (I probably have) - we have signed one established outfield player from the lower divisions in 19 years. So historically - we are not signing Nathaniel Clyne

Since the emergence of Smalling and Jones, being linked with young defenders excites me greatly. We could really do with a natural right back nailing down that spot. Would really like if this signing went through.

Didn't we try to sign Aaron Ramsey? If the scouts reckon they are good enough, or have the potentail to mkae it here, we will enquire about signing them.

Sign him for 2m, and loan him out next season to another PL club. If he does not work out, I am sure we would get our money back.

Seems a no brainer to me.

My only concern is the impact it might have on one or two of the reserves, such as Michael Keane.

No way are Palace going to sell him for £2 million more like 5 or 6.

EDIT: I didn't realise that he had less than a year on his contract left.

correct me if im wrong, but didnt (arguably) our best ever full back come from Div2 football (Oldham) to United? I am off course referring to Denis Irwin

Other than Keane we havent really gona any natural right backs coming through.

Im in!!!!

We don't have enough choices. We have 5 center backs and three full backs. 2 full backs are injured and the nr. 1 center back. Smalling and Jones aren't full backs. They're emergency covers.

Rafael and Fabio frankly can't be counted on at the moment. Their health hasn't been the most stable since arriving.

Smalling frankly looks a bit tired. He's never played so much at this level before.

An interesting direction, but a necessary one. Ideally I'd opt for a person who could play either fullback position myself.

Also technically any new right back is an O'Shea replacement. ;)

Had another good game for Palace tonight, wouldn't mind taking him on the cheap.

Manchester United want Nathaniel Clyne Crystal Palace | Mail Online

Apparently we're ready to offer 3mil for him.
Could provide some cover at RB, as Fabio and Rafael will inevitably injure themselves soon again, probably at the same time too.

Anyway, this Clyne lad is indeed highly rated (by Palace fans, admittedly) and represents smart investment.
I know he played against us but can't really remember him myself. Kept Diouf (or whoever played left wing) quiet though, that much is clear.

Im sure he's talented and all but the bolded isn't a ringing endorsement by any means. It's like saying to a job interviewer; "sure I always turn up". It's expected.

Maybe you could back up your point by reminding us all of the players we used to sign from bigger sides (than ours)?
There aren't many sides that are bigger than us, but we have signed some players from big sides: Silvestre (Inter), Cruyff (Barcelona), Blanc (Inter), Veron (Lazio)... (I don't mean to side with Devilish in your discussion, you're clearly right about our transfer strategy, the comment just got me thinking.)

The only big signing from that lot was Veron. It was a major capture for us.

Inter were happy to sell us Silvestre, they had also agreed a fee with Liverpool for him

Barcelona had Cruyff on the transfer list

And Blanc was very old

I know. It's just a list of players signed from "big" clubs. Berbatov was a bigger signing than Blanc, Silvestre and Cruyff, despite coming from a midtable club.

It's a bit of a disingenuous question as how many clubs are bigger than Manchester United anyway?

I guess Hargreaves would also belong to that list of players signed from "big" clubs.

Still, my point was more about the fact that a lot of our new signings come from "small" clubs is nothing new.

It makes sense. First of all, being a big club means that we are in direct competition with other big clus who might prefer avoid 'helping' us strengthening the squad. In fact if you look at the big clubs in the uk, we only seem to do deals with mainly with spurs.
Secondly, it seems that (lately even more) we sign three type of players - promising players (like vidic, rooney, jones, dasilvas, degea, anderson etc which rival big clubs will never sell to us ) and
- players who were great but performing below their all time high (like evra, blanc, vds).
- established players at the peak of their career like berbatov amd carrick, tevez and hargreaves.

Recent trends suggest that we sign most of our players from the first category which do not generally come from big clubs- with the exception of pique perhaps.

When was the last time we signed a player from a lower league side for the first team? I cant remember any...

Alan Smith :)

Well if we ignore clubs being relegated in the same season - I can think of the following during Fergusons era

Ralph Milne (!)
Lee Sharpe - he was a talent but broke in the first team within a few months
Dion Dublin - signed from Cambridge

who else ?

Yeah ignoring teams that had just been relegated as I think we signed Bellion the same summer Sunderland went down as well
