Muppet Watch 2013 Edition

Sahin is the only one I really got my hopes up for that has massively disappointed, I really thought he'd be one of the worlds best by now. I still think Modric would've been a fantastic signing for us though and I'd still happily sign him this summer.

Charlie Adam, that's the one, that's all that needs to be said! I'm sure there's loads of them.

I think you're being harsh on Muniain. He's still only 20. No idea how good he is but maybe he is the next superstar. Likewise with the other Bilbao ones. That kid Herrera's just after having a great game against Barca at the weekend and still looks to fit the bill. Good passer, runs all day and likes to stick a boot in (6 tackles at the weekend, 3rd most passes on the pitch).

Yeah, the anguish over Sahin joining the dippers was amusing.

Munain was another player we absolutely positively had to sign or miss out on a megastar. Canales too. Whats he up to these days?

Thinking back, there as at least 2 others from that Athletic side we were apparently insane not to sign, although I can't remember their names.

fecking hell, remember when Charlie Adams was supposed to be the solution to all our woes?!?

Sahin is doing pretty well again for Dortmund. Never really got a chance at Madrid and Liverpool are idiots that didnt use him correctly. Think he's still a very good footballer. Scord an absolute screamer for Dortmund this weekend. Same goes for Muniain. Bags of talent.

Charlie Adam only very very few retards wanted to have here.

Tbf, only a select few actually wanted Charlie Adam, right? :nervous:

I agree on getting hopes up for Sahin but, he was never really available to us anyway. Wanted to go to Real when he first moved with his clause and then was only available for a temporary loan to Liverpool.

Modric would have been a very good signing for us but Levy wasn't selling for anything below a crazy price the summer before as Chelsea found out, and the next summer he only really wanted to go to Real explicitly.

I think this is one thing that people forget about too. Not every player is available at the right time for the right price/wages.

Not the thread for it but I'd love to see a list of all the midfielders the transfer gurus wanted us to buy in the last couple of years. You hear people talk about how we missed out on Javi Martinez or Vidal when they were clearly great options but you don't hear people talking about how we missed out on the likes of Tiote even though he was sure to be a great signing too...

Off the top of my head:

- Miguel Veloso a million times
- Steven Defour
- Axel Witsel
- Luka Modric
- Wesley Sneijder
- Mesut Ozil
- Lass Diarra
- Scott Parker
- Charlie Adam
- Cheick Tiote
- Maurouane Fellaini
- Victor Wanyama

- Gourcuff
- Ever Banega
- Joey Barton!!
- Jordan Henderson!!
- Adel Taarabt!!
- Samir Nasri
- Stephen Ireland!!

!! for some of the worst ones.

Every summer there have always been quite a large number of people who have wanted us to sell Carrick. Madness!

Not many people wanted to sign Tiote and hardly anyone wanted to sign Adam. In fact the Adam thread was mostly people praying he wasn't joining us. I'm ashamed to admit I was pro Scott Parker though... :(

I dunno I think Muniain will be a superstar, if he wasn't Basque he probably would have left for a top team by now.

I'd take Muniain and Herrera in a flash, those two are fantastic talents.

People are really being over the top here for the omg lols. Hardly anyone wanted most of those players, some idiot like Scholesy doesn't speak for all (my) muppets (brothers).

Wilshere or Gundogan, Bale and one of Isco/Neymar as a top level desire. Even just two of those players would make us formidable...

Realistically probably Moutinho, James McCarthy and one of Alexis Sanchez/Eriksen/Rodriguez. Can't see Bale becoming United property...Lewandowski is fantastic and I wouldn't be averse to his signing, but there is more pressing need for at least one complete midfielder and a versatile wide playmaker cum goalscorer.

I've always thought Muniain was a bit poor myself. Well, not 'poor', but not any boy genius. I think his touch is a bit messy and not particularly graceful. His output isn't great either.

Herrera, I would take in a heartbeat. Been a fan of his for about two years now. Great technician, and as you said, doesn't shirk the physical side too. He would compliment Carrick well and help form a solid base for the attacking players, while contributing going forward too.

Summer targets identified

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that work has already started on possible summer transfer targets.

In an exclusive interview with Inside United, the official club magazine, the Reds boss insisted he has a solid foundation in terms of his squad to ensure sustained success for the next five years or so as the younger players mature.

Although several clubs look likely to spend lavishly during the close season in a bid to compete for next year's title, the manager acknowledges that the champions will again be competitive in the transfer market after landing the likes of Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa in 2012.

Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool will all surely be on the look-out for big-name arrivals, particularly with a bumper new television deal coming into effect. It means that the task of retaining the title will be a difficult one but it is already a challenge that is being relished from within Old Trafford.

"You have to look at the structure of the club at present, in terms of the number of first-team players we have at 23 or under," Sir Alex explained in his monthly column in Inside United.

"David De Gea, Rafael, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Alex Büttner, Nick Powell, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck. Shinji Kagawa and Chicharito are 24. Jonny Evans is 25 and Wayne Rooney is hitting his peak at 27.

"Older players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand may be coming towards the end of their careers, but these younger players are the foundation for the next five or six years, irrespective of the players breaking through, like Adnan Januzaj, the Belgian boy, who's really looking very good.

"Hopefully the players we bring into the club in the next year or so will be of the quality we need. We're competitive in the market - we're not Chelsea or Manchester City in terms of money but we're competitive.

"We've been doing a bit of work on that over the last three or four months, targeting who the players are that we feel could enhance us, make us better or help us maintain the level we're at."

Perhaps the:

"Hopefully the players we bring into the club in the next year or so will be of the quality we need," Sir Alex told the club's official magazine.

Suggest that Lewandowski may come next summer on a free if we cant get him this year?

He'll go to Bayern over us if he has his way. Our only chance there is Dortmund not selling to Bayern and us convincing him this summer.

Still, i doubt with our striker situation vs Bayern he will come here.

I'd say the only way he's coming here is if Rooney/Hernandez go and the remaining player is happy to sit it out on the bench for quite a few games a year

It is a strange quote really....."hopefully" they will be of the quality we need doesn't sound particularly convincing. Surely if you are identifying targets they should "definitely" be of the quality we need?

I would hope Ferguson has a good idea of what is required....strengthening while on top is something he has grappled with since the mistakes of 1999-2000. City will attack the transfer market with gusto this year, they won't repeat the same mistakes of last season. Our Champions League rivals will also be active, it is a tough business to acquire your primary targets as United have found to their cost in the last few years.

Sounds like he is targeting players who can improve our first team based on that.

Aye one would hope so....the squad has depth and has been the main reason for our league domination.

In Europe, particularly the latter stages it is primarily about the strength of your top eleven. Of course you need squad players to cover for injuries but our first eleven could do with a couple more top additions.

For Fergie that's a pretty clear indication we are looking to strengthen our first team. Doesnt always come out like that. I'm in muppet mode.

We'll splash. I hope he doesn't restrict himself to almost exclusively buying from within the Prem though as he has appeared to do in recent years. I mean, if we can get the very best, but that isn't likely. I'd say we have done enough in recent years to form the British core, and now we should just try and sprinkle that extra quality to complete the side. Not saying these players can't be British, I'm just working on the assumption we will not be getting Jack Wilshere or Gareth Bale.

Good. We really need to sort out our problems up front.

I'm still got my fingers crossed that we get Strootman. I'm nailing my colours to the mast and saying we will win everything if we get him.

We can't know that. We don't even know if Pep wants him or not. Also, he probably liked United more than Bayern. Didn't his agent said some times ago that Lewa prefers Premier League?
