Muppet Watch 2013 Edition

With Mancini being given nothing to work with last summer and inevitably getting the sack this summer, I wonder if they went down the path of "Well he's got a good enough squad to win the league, if he can't do it without spending a fortune he's not a good enough manager for us anyway".

With that in mind and City's shite season I reckon they're going to look to spend a few quid this summer and I think that could cost us a target or two when City will take their old route of both strengthening and stopping us from strengthening.

I reckon Bale and Gundogan would choose us over City though. It's only the money whores like Nasri who choose City over us.

Would Bale choose us for £200,000 over City for £250,000+? I agree that he would.

Would we pay anything over the £40m Levy would demand for him? Not likely.

Would City pay over £60m for him and closer to what Levy wants? They probably would, yes.

I think for somebody in the class of Bale we would pay close to 60 for him.

He is still young, has his whole career ahead of him and will only get better.

Fergie kind of hints he would pay huge money to get Ronaldo back, and while Bale isn't in the same class he's still a special talent and one Fergie may feel similar about.

I can't see us nearly doubling our record payment for a player. I think we'd go up to £40m for a player, anymore we'd set the same precedent we set years ago and start paying a premium on every future signing again.

I think we've been good in the market in recent years and paid much closer to a players true value than in years gone by.

New TV deal next year, new sponsorship with Chevrolet coming into place and a new Nike contract to negotiate things are looking very good at the moment. I have a feeling if a special player comes available we wouldn't mind splashing 50m+ for him, wasn't we gonna pay around 37m for Lucas? I guess we'd be willing to pay 50 for Bale a year later in a better financial position. I could be wrong but I just have a feeling that a big player will be signed this summer.

Exactly.

Sure 60 sounds alot but when dividing it across a few years, and weighing up the value he could bring to the team, I really do think he would be worth it.

Anyway the money is only going to go into the Glazers back pocket anyway.

If we are ever going to spend that amount, we are getting closer to the point surely...

Unless you've got a spare flux capacitor then, yes, that sentence makes sense.

:lol; I have been dire recently, I meant that if we were ever to spend close to that amount, it is more likely now-a-days than say, 5 years ago IMO.

I don't think SAF would have a problem spending that money if he felt the player was worth that...

Last night I dreamt I was hanging out in front of OT with some other supporters. This car drove up and Gundogan got out. We asked why he was there. His answer was that "He was here to sign his new contract."

I am about ready to go into full Transfer Muppet Mode, I can feel it coming on.

I'll be right behind you. I can't wait.

Ferguson believes that United may need only two players to strengthen this summer. "I don't think that we need to rebuild at all – possibly two players, if possible. It depends of course. If a player came along that we felt met our criteria, I think we'd push the boat out and get him irrespective of how many players we had," the Scot said.

So......2 players yeah.

Nothing more than the usual vague and non committal rhetoric we hear every year. I am far more interested in SAF clarifying exactly what 'our criteria' actually is?

Maybe if we had a better idea of what the club is actually looking for, it would be a little easier to determine potential targets. SAf is not making it any easier for the muppets amongst us! :)

I'm reading 2 players but it keeps becoming 4 by the time it gets to my head.

At least one new CM for sure, as would be surprised to see Scholes and Anderson still in our squad come August. Depending on if any of Nani/Rooney/Hernandez were to leave, that's probably the defining factor more than anything else.

Said in another thread that I hate transfer windows, but what with the lack of an international tournament, I might be a muppet this year.

There is confed cup and euro u-21 so Isco will probably need to wait unless I'm mistaken.

Two players, eh?
Then. . .perhaps
Lewa & strootman/wanyama
Or
Strootman/wanyama & bale

Depending on whether roo goes to cm or not

Wanyama said he's staying at Celtic mate.

If we sell Ando and Scholes and Fletcher retire, than I highly doubt that we will sign just one midfielder (unless there are special plans for Rooney). Ideal would be if we sign two great midfielders (like GUndogan and Moutinho) but I wouldn't complain if we sign just one if them and the second one being a young one (like McCarthy or Wanyama or someone I don't know).

One established playmaker and one young backup to Carrick makes sense, if that happens.

Won't be surprised if we only sign 1 though with plans for Rooney and Jones in midfield.

I'm the carrier

Feel free to infect more, I'm sure to catch it so the more the merrier.
I've seen Strootman play quite a few times this season after I heard rumours he'd be coming here. He's a strong player, tackles well, gets quite a few cards though. He has good technique, and passed well. And he has a proven track record of playing well as a CM.
Therefore as logic goes, will we sign him?
My money is actually on yes, we will.

We haven't even been linked to Strootman anywhere either. Have there even been reports of our scouts watching him?

Van Der Sar said he would be a good signing for us a couple of weeks back. There are reports we've sent scouts to check him out but I have no idea how true that is.

What really gets the muppet juices flowing is this statement.
"Having spoken with the Glazer family, I think there is every intention of wanting to kick on," Ferguson said.

He's said that he really only needs 2 players, but having this kind of statement means the Glazers really are backing him this summer?
