MLB 2014

Why would the Cubs be going under slot? I thought they had gobs of money?
So you can spread the slot money you don't spend there on later picks of players who dropped because of money demands. Slot value for number 4 pick is $4,621,200, if they can get him for, say, $3.5m, that's a million and change more that they can spend on overslot players.

Why skimp at the top though?

Because that's where you can save the most money. Their next pick has a slot value of $1.25m. They obviously thought the 4th best player wasn't better enough than Schwarber than the difference between the players they can get later over than those they would have been getting with slot picks.

Nick Gordon, Dee's brother, went 5 to the Twins. Nola at 6 I would think. I love Nola. Jackson is gonna be a steal too.

EDIT: Jackson at 6, Nola at 7.

Don Zimmer passed away..:( RIP.

Unfortunate that the last image I would remember him by was when that cnut Pedro grabbed him by his head and threw in him to the ground in the 2003 ALCS.

Heard something about his chewing tobacco habit a while back, but didn't know it was at an advanced stage. This has completely blindsided me.

Clayton Kershaw pitched an absolute lights-out no-hitter last night. Only a Hanley Ramirez error prevented it from being a perfect game. He had 15 Ks without a hit or a walk on only 107 pitches. Incredible performance.

good to see kershaw back to his brilliant best., had a fe dogy starts since his injury.

Gotta say Tanaka has exceeded all expectations so far, I really rated him in Spring but I don't think even I could imagine these numbers.

11-1 Record
1.99 ERA
10.2 K/9
1.4 B/9
WHIP of 0.953

Rookie season in a new country aged 25, its brilliant.

His numbers don't even do him full justice either, he's a brilliant thinking pitcher who really knuckles down when he lets runners on, his batting average against with runners on is something ridiculous like .183. That splitter is absolute filth.

I admire your dedication for such a piss-poor team, lol. Unfortunately, I don't see things changing anytime soon unless Wilpon sells the team.
well im hoping next season we can just out pitch everyone one. As on paper our pitching staff will be incredible, Harvey, Niese, Syndergaard, Gee, Colon,Wheeler, deGrom, Montero.
So hopefully it wont matter that our offense is utter sh*t! and we might even be able to improve our offense by trading a couple of starting pitchers as it looks like where gonna have a surplus.

so it not all doom and gloom, even with the Wilpons Lack of investment.

Met fan. I was 7 in 1969 when they won--beside 1986 it's been a painful ride.
im 29..... its just been painful lol

still seems like we have remembered what a bat does in the last few days, the oakland games wer a great watch, even with wheelers dodgy start.

but colon has been somthing else recently, its mesmerizing watching him pitch.

Tanaka on the DL with elbow inflammation, given he is the only decent starter for the Yankees I reckon TJ surgery is on the way with our luck.

Sell, Sell, Sell.

bit of a shame just before the all star game... but yeah yankees in trouble now, this is the season for new york sides

If Tanaka is out for the year then they would be mad to not be sellers at the deadline, this team isn't even close to being a winner yet.

Could get a little something for the future for players like Robertson and Kuroda (if you can get him to waive his NTC). Maybe you could shop Ichiro, Thornton and Cervelli and get a little something back too. But yeah if Tanaka is out the season is over, its just a case of the Yankees management realising the reality of that.

Btw, halfway through the season and it looks like Max Scherzer knew what he was doing by turning down a 6-yr $144 million contract with the Tigers. Thought he was nuts at the time, but looks like the right move if he can stay healthy.

Yankees will be all over Scherzer, they will panic in the offseason with their rotation in bad shape, short and long term.

Tanaka - Rehabbing but TJS still a possibility.
Nova - Rehabbing from TJS and won't be around until mid next season.
Kuroda - Probably retiring.
CC - Out for the year with a degenerative injury, quite possible he won't pitch again or be effective (not that he was anymore).

Yankees don't have anyone in the system ready to step up and fill rotation holes, not legitimate front end pieces anyway. Max is gonna get mad paid.

Pretty fun trade deadline day to follow.

Price to the Tigers
Jackson to the Mariners
Franklin & Smyly to the Rays
Lester to the Athletics
Cespedes to the Red Sox
Lackey to the Cardinals
Drew & Prado to the Yankees

Can't believe the Phillies didn't move anyone, Ruben Amaro is the worst GM in baseball.

I liked Jackson and, especially, Smyly, but Price for a year and a half, at least? I'll take that. Wouldn't have happened if the Tigers still had Fister (awful trade), but it's a shiny new play thing

Also, getting Lester is a quality move, and Cespedes in going to flourish in Fenway

Amaro Jr is on borrowed time. Definitely deserves to get shitcanned. His strategy of trotting out the same players on bloated contracts and hoping for a different result will finally cost him his job.

One could easily argue the Cubs got more back for 1 1/2 years of Samardzija and 1/2 a year of Jason Hammel than the Rays did for 1 1/2 years of David Price.

Cubs are gonna be perennial contenders from about 2016 onwards.
