Mikel Arteta | Lego Pep watch

United fans are really in a terrible place. Superb team under a genius Manager sold fans dreams. Then lack of success since SAF retired and now they're happy that they can never be accused of choking league titles because they haven't even challenged for one in over a decade. They've won four trophies since SAF left, including a European competition that top teams don't even play in, plus one their own fans nicknamed "the Micky Mouse Cup". Even Arsenal have yielded 4 x FA Cups in our worst period in 40+ years.
Actually, I'd say United fans are currently in the giddy phase of their regular managerial replacement process. There hasn't been enough time for reality to kick in yet.

Give it another couple of seasons, after a few more shit transfer windows and once their players have downed tools again, and they'll be back to the despair they usually associate with watching their games

You’d know how this felt much better than anyone. Experts some may say!

Oh absolutely. You haven't reached the depths we had, so maybe that's why your fans don't understand why we're happy with our current level

He needs to win something soon surely? Funny that he is not being judged much on what trophies he has won with Arsenal, he deserves more scrutiny.

I suppose the standards from Arsenal fans is even lower than United fans standards.

Funny that United have won the same amount of trophies as Arsenal since 2013 and yet United have been disastrous in that time, and the fans are rightly unhappy. Contrast to Arsenal fans who are happy with their club even though they have nothing more to show for themselves than United in the last 11 years.

In the last 8 years, Arsenal and United have both finished 2nd twice.

Remind us again why Arsenal are in such a better position than United? If Arteta wins no trophies this season, then Arsenal have gone trophyless for 5 years, Arteta has spent a fortune, and in the long run, has nothing to show for it. History won't look at the team that 'almost' won the Premier League.

Sold fans dreams? We were winning league titles for 20 years. We did absolutely everything and achieved success all other clubs could only dream, it was bound to end one day. Yet as I say even after it’s ended we’ve still won more than Arsenal.

Hilarious you bring up the European competition, I forgot to mention that not only have Arsenal failed to win the top European competition in their entire history, but they’ve also failed to win the Mickey Mouse cup as you call it. I mean what are you actually playing at calling it that when your club has failed to even win it? Also you should check your history if you’re think Arsenal have had their worst period in 40+ years anytime recently.

Rubbish comeback to a complete home truth. Arsenal fans are in a worse place than I thought. I’m regularly seeing worse delusion than mid-2000s RAWK.

That level of bitterness is normally reserved for City fans. Though it could be the delusion of a dipper. Know your role in the food chain kid.

I wanted Arsenal to win the league this year over Liverpool or City.. but after seeing all the reaction from the Arsenal fans, I do not want them to win the league anymore.

One of the weirdest fan bases seriously. I hope they dont win this title.

Still better than Liverpool winning it. And for me, a ton better than City winning it. I’d like the City “project” to fall apart. 8 out the last 13 titles and 6 out of the last 7 is a joke for the PL.

Arsenals fans are hilarious.

The last time you won the league was before we had the iPhone, the US hadn’t had a black president yet, Facebook had just been introduced, the PS3 was still a few years away, Netflix was still shipping DVDs instead of streaming, and USB sticks hadn’t fully replaced floppy disks yet.

Next time you see a funny meme about Antony or whatever on social media posted by an Arsenal fan, remember that the poor kid most likely hadn’t been born the last time his team won the league.

Until Arteta lands anything of actual value, in the words of the big ugly Nordic tree, “Stay humble, eh.”

I just rewrote the post from the perspective of United with the timeframe of SAF's retirement, rather than the fairly arbitrary 8 years that was originally chosen.

Remove the names Arsenal and United.

Team A's immediate concerns are reducing the frontrunner's lead in the title race and qualifying for the latter stages of the Champions League where they are currently in the top 8 automatic slots. Team B's immediate concerns are getting out of the bottom half of the league and progressing in the Europa League and are currently in the playoff positions. There are literally 10 positions between them in the table. If you honestly think that one isn't in a better position than the other, then we can agree to disagree.

I'm not sure why you decided to give me a United history lesson, nobody is arguing that you aren't a hugely successful club. I was talking about since SAF retired.

The Mickey Mouse Cup I was referring to is the League Cup. And it's not "as I call it", it's what the United fanbase called it for years.

The last 12 years have been our worst 12 year period in the last 40+ years, I know my club's history fairly well, thanks.

Rubbish comeback to a complete home truth. Arsenal fans are in a worse place than I thought. I’m regularly seeing worse delusion than mid-2000s RAWK.
My "rubbish comeback" was entirely factual, unlike your post that says you've won more trophies than Arsenal in that period which is untrue.
  • The Europa League is a competition the top teams don't even play in.
  • United fans did nickname the League Cup the Mickey Mouse Cup
  • Arsenal have won 4 x FA Cups in that time (plus 3 x Charity Shields as a bonus)
It's funny that there's been a bunch of retorts but none actually engage with the points I made, but hey ho.

We’ll see if that actually happens.

You don’t understand Europe really as you haven’t won anything in it

Surely you would take that Mickey Mouse cup as a bit of variety? FA Cups only for 20 years now. You didn’t make any points, my original post still stands. The fact you’re pointing out it’s actually 4-4 on trophies in the last 10 years is quite amusing.

You’re inferior to United as a club in so many ways, and the last couple of years where this hasn’t been reflected in the table are irrelevant when you still haven’t won anything where as we’ve been complete shit and have. Shouldn’t you be demanding something soon? Nope, going crazy over a string of extremely defensive big games wins while dropping points in other games and 7 points off the top behind a team who you finished above the last couple of years.

I dont know what some of you.want to see written...Arteta is garbage and we should dump him? If you want to see that go on AM. Of course we have room to improve. We are not City.

You cannot play for corners. The other team has to knock it out. Yes, it is that simple. If the other team is repeatedly putting it out...then either they dont know how to defend or they are under pressure. I dont know why this is an issue.

If scoring goals was so easy from corners, all the other teams would be doing it already, and we would have a bunch every game. Teams should be warned by now, not to give us corners. If you are giving up 10+ of them, you are asking for trouble, and you should be defending further up the pitch.....or learn how to defend them.

Oh... And that could also mean no low block against us..
Excellent! I have no problem with the goals from corners. What I do have a problem with was the almost total lack of invention when Odegaard was out

That Arteta needs to step up and actually win a trophy. Who cares if Arsenal keep finishing 2nd or 3rd and winning no trophies, at some point he needs to get the team over the line.

He has spent £500m on his squad, 2nd or 3rd and no trophies is not enough after almost 5 years.

The first part is fair...we also want to see something more tangible than a second place finish.

The second part is not...all the top 6 teams have apent a bundle..and it's probably top 8 now...that doesn't mean very much.

If Man Utd could add a whole wack of goals coming from set pieces, would their fans say....sorry take those goals of the board, it's not the way we want to score?

Most of the top 6 teams have only spent that sort of money as a club and not for a single manager.

How long are you going to give him for continuing to finish 2nd and 3rd with no trophies though? Another 5 years?

Until there is a better option. Really only one team has really done a whole lot in the last few years.

But other clubs such as United and Liverpool are still winning the odd trophy here and there.

The excuses for Arteta are bizarre. Who cares if you finish 2nd and 3rd every year if there is nothing to show for it. He has been backed significantly with his own squad and can't even win a trophy.

He won an FA Cup btw. I am personally not looking for that a whole lot. It would help a bit...but FA cup isnt much at this point for me. League cup even less. What I want is the CL or the league.

Yes he won the FA Cup in the first 6 months of his tenure. In the 4 years since then, he has got rid of that entire squad, spent £450m on his own squad of players to fit his play style and has not even won a thing since.

You take them trophies for granted because you are using 'them trophies are not important' as an excuse for Arteta not being able to win anything with his squad.

You want Arsenal to win the PL or CL, but you just said you are happy to keep Arteta until a better option comes along. So are you saying you are happy to not win the league for another 5 years if no better options become available? Pointless all that money spent to just be a maybe club.

You have been a maybe club since 2004, are you not tired of mediocrity yet?

Not at all. We're not the fanbase who would wank themselves into oblivion over the triangular passing patterns under previous managers, brag about playing the most entertaining football in the league, only to then settle for a manager who relies on set piece goals more than anyone else in Europe.

I think overall we're not as snobby about winning ugly as Arsenal fans were under Wenger and Emery. Rewind to 2016, would Arsenal fans have been as willing to give Mourinho a chance as their manager as we were?

Obviously nowhere near as bad, but we've gotten close under LVG and ETH. Something about Dutch managers brings out the worst football hipsters.

Nah, I'm good. If we make the final I'd rather win it than not, but that's about the extent of it.

You didn’t make any points, my original post still stands.
I was replying to a post about how terrible it must be to be an Arsenal fan that was greeting with the likes of, "Damn, that's a truth and a half. Really funny when you put it that way" and "Ouch." I just pointed out that the same is equally true of United fans if you don't arbitrarily choose a cut-off point of 8 years. It could be argued that it's more true as United fans themselves have historically been disparaging of the competitions that comprise half of said trophy haul when, for example, Liverpool were winning them.

The fact you’re pointing out it’s actually 4-4 on trophies in the last 10 years is quite amusing.
My point is that United fans posting about their sympathy for Arsenal fans is laughable, seeing it's at least equally true of United seeing as we've won an equal number of trophies in recent times. And as any analysis of Arteta and/or Arsenal quickly descends into "Where are the trophies, United have won more recently..." it seemed kind of relevant to point out that since SAF retired that isn't actually the case.

You’re inferior to United as a club in so many ways...
The fact that you feel the need to keep mentioning United's historic success that literally nobody is denying is kinda telling.

...and the last couple of years where this hasn’t been reflected in the table are irrelevant when you still haven’t won anything where as we’ve been complete shit and have. Shouldn’t you be demanding something soon? Nope, going crazy over a string of extremely defensive big games wins while dropping points in other games and 7 points off the top behind a team who you finished above the last couple of years.
It somewhat becomes gobbledygook nearer the end. I'm not sure who you think is going crazy over our "extremely defensive big games wins". If you're counting our win against United as one of them, our focus moved on almost immediately to cutting the Liverpool's lead in our upcoming match with Fulham. United fans are the ones with a thread called Best way to defend Arsenal’s sh*thouse corners? that is four pages long.

Anyway, you don't seem at all interested in actually engaging with what I'm saying. I'll expect yet another reply all about how big a club United are, as though anyone had made any arguments to the contrary.

Our corners are disgusting. It's like a penalty. Well played to Arteta, the coaching staff and the players.

We also finally have some arseholes in our team to play physical and dirty.

The soft cock mentality is done. It took years to rid the dressing room of the toxic players.

We need to win a big trophy or it's for nothing.

Depends what you consider mediocre. Is an FA Cup suddenly the barometer for not being mediocre?. I think we were a just above average club for almost ten years before the last two. Finishing in 2nd with 80+ points...is not mediocre. I know some if you will use the trophy thing as either you are it or you are not, but challenging is the first thing I expect now. I consider Man Utd to be very close to mediocrity.

We could let Arteta go....but who you going to put in that will guarantee you that CL or League title? Go to some wild card option?

Anyway...we will see if we are out of the running this year. It looks difficult, but this Pool team isn't City. Salah is on another level again, and if he keeps up, he might carry them

I wonder what you say about Chelsea. They should have won everything under the sun if you consider spending as the main criteria.

If you fired Amorim a year from now and Arteta was available....would every Man Utd fan say....."no way..not him!" Just answer that one please.

i dont know if Arteta can cross that last hurdle. I suspect he can. He has come very close the last two times against a very good City team. Giving up on him now, would be stupid and impulsive in my opinion. Now if we could get Pep...maybe i could change my mind.

Arteta is 42 years old. Ferguson didn't even become Man United manager until he was 46.

There are no excuses for Arteta. We Arsenal fans know how shit we were when he arrived, and we know how hard the competition is with regards to Pep and Man City. We know we have a brilliant young manager. We also know sacking him and replacing him with De Zerbi or Frank would be outright dumb

I do find it hilarious watching rival fans disingenuously suggest we need to get rid of Arteta. Its a common theme among rival fans, they are daring us to sack him. Hoping we sack him. They masquerade their genuine intentions though. They dont say Arteta should go because they view him as a Ten Hag/Graham Potter figure, the want him gone..............because they see him not as a Ten Hag/Potter figure.

Just be honest. You hope Arsenal nosebleed an Arteta sacking and De Zerbi appointment. Stop pretending your genuinely concerned for Arsenals wellbeing in thinking Arteta should be moved on. I see right through the BS

To add, we all know City have cheated. Everyone knows this. This would have been our years had it not been for them and Arteta would have been in his 3rd league title in a row hunt, something not even Wenger had done.

I agree re: Arteta's job too, Klopp only beat these cheats once. Despite having an ATG attack and backline. And he was very experienced as a manager too compared to Arteta. One of the best managers of this modern era could only beat Pep once, that's how good Pep is, aided by cheating ofcourse. If there's anyone who's better than Klopp then yes let's get him in. But we know there's not. Only Klopp has beaten Pep to a title (and Jose with one of the best Madrid team in history) and we know how Jose fared at United against Pep.
