Mikel Arteta | Lego Pep watch

What are Arsenal getting in Arteta?
Pep: Arsenal people know him, lovely person and a a great manager.

Oh, I do hope they appoint Arteta. Will only waste another year of Arsenal revival and help us, next year :)

If they do appoint him, it will clearly be banking on "he's worked under Pep, must have learned a lot". But that is a very flawed logic - there's a huge difference between duties of an assistant manager and head coach, and you don't just become great by observing somebody else's talented management. Whatever he may or may not have learned from Pep, he is absolutely not ready to manage a massive club like Arsenal, especially during their major decline. Huge gamble.

Yeah I'm sure that is how the interview went.

"I worked with Pep"

"You've convinced us!"

I'd be a bit worried for he and Arsenal if reports Steve Round will be part of his backroom staff end up being true.
What? The same clueless guy who was Moyes’ assistant?

 I originally read 'Steve Bould' and thought Xaviesta's opinion was a bit unfair. But Steve fecking Round, what the actual feck are they thinking?!

Interviews go much easier if the interviewers are already predisposed to want you onboard. So that is where "Pep factor" matters a lot. Other than that - 100s of coaches can put together a powerpoint and bullshit their way through an interview. It's not a bullet-proof science, FFS.

1. You're not even in the room (wait.. are you?)

2. Going back to your original post, you seem to think Arteta just shadowed Pep at City. Contrary to Pep and players speaking on Arteta's role in training and coaching. Contrary to the endorsements he has received from 3 great coaches.

3. What is your rationale for saying he's absolutely not qualified to manage Arsenal? What, according to your standards, qualifies you to manage a club?

Has Arteta worked as a head coach nevermind a manager before?

Yeah not really sure you've thought about this one. Arsenal interviewed 8 candidates according to Sanllehi and Arteta came out on top. Him previously working with Pep I imagine counts towards about 1% of their decision.

they clearly want someone younger and for the longer haul, hence not going for Ancellotti. i'm all for new blood in the managerial ranks, and he was always a pretty classy player really.

I am sure you attended all of these 8 interviews and in general have ton of experience with interviewing coaches, which is why you think you can "school" me with such authoritative tone? You be you.

Tough start for him looking at the fixtures coming up for them. This should have probably been done after they lost to Leicester before the last international break, but they dragged it out and lost silly points to Southampton, Norwich and Brighton. Couple of europa games in there too where it could have given him chance to assess the squad before the proper work begins.

Going to be hard for him. Need to sort out the defending first of all. Given how City have struggled under Pep and him I would be suprised if he manage that.
He might be able to get Pepe going in attack though.

I think this could be a real masterstroke by Arsenal. He clearly has the feel for the game, was massively praised by both Wenger and Guardiola, two of the best managers of all time and clearly has an idea on how he wants to play.
He now has to be backed and supported by both fans and the board, because this squad doesn't have anyone that suits the style of play he would like to have. I know it's a cliche, but he really needs time and patience, and maybe he can succeed.

Very tough job ahead of him. I'm 50-50 on this one. Not sure at all whether he will fail or will be a good appointment.

Correction: ‘I worked with the bald cnut’’

True that

Is he on record as preferring a certain type of style?

I read on reddit that he said he wants to play high-tempo attacking football, which I believe would be similar to the Pep's style.

I'd love to know what the expectations are from the Arsenal board.
They can't really be expecting much from him now they fecked up the season by not acting swiftly enough. Getting fifth, more than 3min of good football per game and try to find a solution to our midfield. The defence is a disaster but could be fixed up with better protection.
He also have 6 months to prepare for life without Aubameyang. He needs to get Martinelli-Laca-Pepe working and sort out for good the Ozil situation.
I hope he can get Xhaka out and his replacement in this transfer window and that the board will support him in the summer.

There are many variants of high-tempo attacking football beyond Pep's methods. I'd hope he wouldn't be dumb enough to not tune his approach to the skills of his players.

It won't matter. They'll penny pinch him and fire him same as Emery.

Then he's their best option because no manager with experience would sign up for that.

Arsenal is lucky to have Mikel Arteta just because he has learnt a lot from Pep and he's been in charge of all the set pieces at City and many other things. He was also a former Arsenal player which means he would obviously want the best for Arsenal. I can kind of dig this Legendary players turning into coaches just because they know how the club functions and their passion for football. Ole at United, Lampard at Chelsea and now Arteta at Arsenal; let's see who can improve the team the most with their knowledge of the game. I feel Arteta will have an instant impact at Arsenal and Pep is one of the reasons Arsenal have chosen to give Arteta the job. He will get back to the 4-3-3 and get this team going again.

I am legit amazed, by the negativity here. I really see him being huge success to Arsenal and staying there for a while. They have a lot of promising youngsters who he can mould into great players.

Arteta would look so weird as a manager in my eyes. He would also be under huge pressure at Arsenal, the squad they have has kind of started to fall apart recently.

Just out of curiosity, any idea where are Pep's assistants from his Barca days. Are they successful in management? Tito is the only one I remember.
