United in chase for £20M Veloso
28/11/2007

Manchester United assistant boss Carlos Queiroz has admitted that bringing Sporting Lisbon wonder-kid Miguel Veloso to Old Trafford has become a "priority".

Portuguese midfield starlet Veloso, 21, is on United's wanted list - but Real Madrid, Arsenal and Inter Milan are all monitoring him closely.

Queiroz says Veloso is among the top young players in the world, and United are considering making a move even though Sporting have stuck a £20million price tag on his head.

"It is impossible to ignore good players and we are following the evolution of some top players," said Queiroz.

"One is Veloso. He would be hard to ignore.

"Big clubs such as Manchester United, Barcelona and Arsenal have a scouting system that looks at players throughout the year.

"Players like Miguel Veloso, Joao Moutinho, Ricardo Quaresma, Bosingwa or Bruno Alves are on the list,

"We have good midfield players like Scholes, Carrick, Hargreaves and Anderson.

"But it is true that if someone was to leave the club then Veloso would be a priority.

So does that mean we're interested in Quaresma etc?

FFS, if the club is willing to drop 20m on another midfielder, I'd rather SAF try to unsettle Essien. Perhaps Essien will go on strike at Chelsea until they transfer him to United, and if they refuse, he could take them to court. According to Liverpool fans, a situation like that would be a slam-dunk court win for Essien.

Ronaldo tells Man Utd: Don't forget Moutinho
tribalfooball.com - November 28, 2007

Manchester United ace Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted of their interest in Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Moutinho.

Asked about United's interest in Miguel Veloso, Ronaldo replied: "He's a great player. But so is Moutinho and Manchester United are always interested in great players."

On last night's 2-1 win, Ronaldo added: "In the first game, in Alvalade, I scored and now I've scored again. It hurts a little to score against your old team, but I'm a footballer and this is my job.

"Sporting were very good in the first-half, United were a bit too relaxed. But in the second 45 we dominated and were worthy winners.

"I think if it wasn't facing Manchester United, Sporting would have won tonight."

feck me, why don't we just buy the whole of bloody Portugal.

:) just wait until Querioz takes over...

Personally I thought Veloso was quite invisible last night.

Striker is surely a priority but have a feeling that will happen in Summer.

A lot depends on how SAF views Anderson - is he going to be mostly a CM who puts in the odd stint 'in the hole' or vice versa?? If he is viewed as being more a part of our striking set up in the long term then that combined with Scholes retirement means there is definitely room. One things is sure though.... if Veloso arrives Fletch is toast.

well like i said before, portugal are producing some of the best young talent who will rule world football along with some of the young dutch, argentinian, and spanish kids. so i wouldn't be too disappointed if we had 3 or 4 of these future world class players.

I think everyone is just concerned with being a team like Arsenal or Liverpool... I have no problem with the nationality of a player, if he's right for United then I welcome him with open arms. I however, don't think Veloso is right for us... Not at this moment in time atleast.

The rumours involving Portuguese players like Miguel Veloso, Joao Moutinho, Ricardo Quaresma just don''t seem to go away. A lot of talent but they are all midfielders. Surely we need a striker more than another midfielder or two.

The only way it may make some sense is if Carrick is going back to Spurs for some type of deal involving Berbatov. And I am not sure if that would be good for us or not.

well I was thinking the same...if we are looking at midfielders...and our need for a striker an all...yeah Carrick switch for Berbatov...

also Carrick has looked out of sorts and unhappy...what with Anderson coming along so well..

with Scholes injured Carrick would have expected to be automatic choice...which has not been the case...

feck Berbatov. Would have been good if we singed him summer of 06, but now I don't want him. Surely theres another viable target besides Berbatov out there...

Dude stop been a muppet, we have sorted our midfield for the future with Carrick/Anderson/Hargreaves and Fletcher when Scholes leaves

If we are gonna get Berbatov is has nothing to do with Carrick. Apart from Berbatov there are many other options we can take.

None in the same direction :nono:

Totally agree.

Fergie tells Veloso to feck off:

Queiroz had already confirmed United had no interest in signing Veloso, a view backed up by Ferguson.

"We are not interested in him and we never have been," said the Scot.

"But our relationship with Sporting Lisbon has been very good for five years now. We approached them about Cristiano Ronaldo, we sat down and we did a deal. We did the same with Nani.

"Why should we bother about tapping a player we are not interested in?"

It was never on tbh,we bought hargreaves so there was never any chance of us buying another defensive midfielder, but i do think veloso is a better player than hargreaves, not that hargreaves is a bad player its just i think veloso has more quality than hargreaves possesses...

honestly, after paying and odd 50 million quid for Anderson, Carrick and Hargreaves in 2 years, it just doesn't make sense to splash out another 10-15 million in the same area.

O... So we were just teasing people with our comments of interest! We are more likely just cooling our interest seeing any move for him wont happen untill next summer!

The comments were that A) He was being scouted, just like ALL good Portuguese prospects (Mr. Q listed them) and B) We had no room for him. He is simply not a priority.

Understand that in no way were the comments teasing. They were clear. And Ferguson has been even more clear. We aren't intersted in Veloso (right now.)

In the future a player could leave or Veloso could improve and look a more attractive transfer target. Right now however, he isn't coming. :nono:

Exactly... but what i'm saying is you can't put some much time into watching a player and they say you was never interested!! It's just a way of cooling interest (Plus Fergie says it all the time i.e. most recent Anelka), whether there's room or not, what would be the point of looking at someone you know you have no room for? But like i said this could be a possible move next year when the likes of Fletcher move on....

So we're intending to sign all 6 or so players Querioz said we were watching?

Come off it. None of them were even a striker.

He simply listed all the major players that were being scouted. And this kind of scouting is what landed us Anderson, Ronaldo and Nani - many more will have been looked at, but not signed.

It's just a very good scouting system in the Portugal making sure we don't miss out on their best young players should there be space for them in the squad.

Right now there's no space and no need to sell and buy a player like Veloso.
