Miguel Veloso

No we failed to advance "further" than the semis of CL because the team was worn out after coming back against Everton on the weekend, then having to travel to Milan (who were all rested at their weekend game), plus our Defense was in tatters and just recovering (Vidic first game back and he was definitly off the pace), and we had no squad depth while competing on three fronts. Certainly a quality DM would help but please do not over simplify it either. Fair?

Thats exactly what happened

veloso, from what i've seen is a CM who can play defense and attack equally as well. after scholes retires, we'll have 4 midfielders in carrick, hargreaves, anderson, veloso which is imo adequate. and fletcher if he's still around. yes i'd prefer we buy a CF and RB, as brown is naturally a CB and simpson is a question-mark... but when you get a quality young player who WANTS to play at united, then i think you jump at the chance, which i hope SAF will. i dont like having to pay a ridiculous fee for a money-grabbing whore who's only in it for the $.

yes if we get him now he'd be surplus.. but hargreaves will get injured throughout his united career, and scholes will get suspensions and will retire in a few years, so i think miguel will get games and if not, he will in the coming years.

To be honest I'd be shocked if we never bought Veloso in the january transfer window.

Manchester United target Miguel Veloso will face the Premier League champions for Sporting Lisbon at Old Trafford on Tuesday night having declared that he would love a move to the club.

Holding midfielder Veloso has been earmarked as a potential long-term replacement for Paul Scholes, with United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz last night admitting the player is on the club's hit-list.

And although a deal for the 21-year-old is not likely to be formally discussed until next summer, the Portugal international has admitted he is ready to follow the path trodden by compatriots Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani.

Veloso said: 'My dream is to play in the Premier League and, if possible, for Manchester United. That is not a secret, even though I'm 100 per cent a Sporting Lisbon player at the moment.

'I will wait for the end of the season for any solution to what has been happening and see if an offer finally arrives. But to play for this club would be sensational. It would be nearly impossible for me to reject this option.

'I've been made aware of the presence of the scouts from United. I'm ambitious and want to do more in my career.

'From my time with Portugal I have heard from Cristiano and Nani about what a club United is. Any player would be happy to play there.

'I am still young and I believe that I will arrive in the Premier League one day.'

United scouts have watched £20m-rated Veloso almost constantly over the last two months. Inter Milan and Real Madrid are also in the hunt.

Queiroz admitted United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is a fan of the player but suggested there may not be a place for him in the team who have already qualified for the second stage of the Champions League with two games to spare.

Queiroz said: 'It is impossible to ignore good players and we are following the development of some Portuguese players. One is Veloso. It would be ridiculous not to. Players like Veloso are on the list but maybe not a priority at the moment.

'If Scholes, Michael Carrick, Owen Hargreaves or Anderson leaves the club one day then it is true that a player like Miguel Veloso would be a priority.'

United's preparations were interrupted when Ferguson was charged with using abusive or insulting language towards referee Mark Clattenburg during Saturday's Premier League defeat at Bolton.

Ferguson is likely to be fined for his outburst but yesterday merely underlined his stance that his players should receive more protection from officials.

He said: 'The key point is that referees control what happens on the field. He is the arbiter of the laws and on Saturday we felt aggrieved about that.'

United will field a relatively strong side at Old Trafford this evening as they seek the win that would send them into the next phase as group winners.

Victory would also enable them to rest key players at Roma next month for a final group game that comes before the Premier League visit to Liverpool.

Ferguson said: 'It would give me a perfect opportunity to rest players against Roma if I wanted to. I'd like to field a pretty strong team against Sporting because it's also an important game for them and for Roma, who are trying to qualify with us.

'It won't be easy. Sporting were very unlucky in their last game against Roma and will want to put that right against us.'

Veloso will take his place in a youthful Sporting line-up keen for some kind of revenge for their 1-0 defeat by United in Lisbon back in September.

He added: 'This match is decisive for us in terms of our future in Europe this season.

'From my personal point of view, I do not need to prove anything to the English. Veloso is the same player in each match and I do not try to reach a superior level in one particular match.

'Queiroz spoke about me in the papers in a good way and that is important, but at the moment I'm at Sporting and the question about a move to United is only a possibility.'

Tbh Veloso looks a better player than Fletcher but there is no chance he can make our first 11 so would be the same thing that is happening to Fletcher.
Apart from that he is cup tied for Champions League this season

If we are gonna buy him then Fletcher's future at United is over.
Right now we need a striker and thats the only thing we may add on the january transfer window.

From what I've seen of Veloso it looks certain he will become a more complete player than both Carrick and Hargreaves, so when Scholesy retires I would like that player to complete our central midfield quartet.

Miguel Veloso admits he will wait until the end of the season before thinking about a 'sensational' move to Manchester United.

The Sporting Lisbon midfielder has been watched by the Premier League champions, with United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz confirming Veloso is on the club's radar.

An imminent move for the Portugal international is unlikely and Veloso is happy to put his future on hold until next summer.

"My dream is to play in the Premier League and, if possible, for Manchester United," said Veloso in the Daily Mail ahead of Tuesday's UEFA Champions League meeting between the two teams.

Impossible to reject

"That is not a secret, even though I'm 100 per cent a Sporting Lisbon player at the moment.

"I will wait for the end of the season for any solution to what has been happening and see if an offer finally arrives.

Competitive

Another Sporting player keen on a move to the Premier League is Leandro Romagnoli, who would be willing to 'listen to offers'.

Romagnoli said: "If an English club was interested and a move works for both myself and Sporting then I would listen to offers.

"For me, the Premier League is the best championship in the world.

"The top players are there and it is more competitive than La Liga, where Real Madrid and Barcelona are the main clubs."

Seems to be ours if/when we want him..

Agreed. He's basically he said he'd prefer to come to us than any other team in the world. We don't need him at the moment, but if a midfielder does leave (probably fletcher) and he is as versatile as what has been suggested then i wouldn't be suprised to see him here by the summer at the latest.

Who cares if United are great and most of the team remains British, that said Anderson is Brazilian

I would like to see British players at United obviously. We ourselves accuse Arsenal for not doing so.And importantly from what i have seen Veloso isn't so special that we have to buy him.Lets see how he does today though.

I like an English spine, but I much prefer a quality United. As such don't care where they are born if the have the heart and ability to play for this great club.

That all said Anderson as others have noted is Brazillian ;).

i also would want a british spine at united. one of the reasons why i became a fan of united is because they held on to that principle of having british players and not a bunch of foreign mercenaries. but we'd still have rio, brown, neville, simpson, hargreaves, carrick, giggs, eagles, rooney. though i am more okay with foreign players now than i was before. like i said before, the future is in these portuguese, argentinian, dutch, and spanish players.. they're technically more sound, tactically disciplined and intelligent, and half the price of the same quality british player..

If and that's a massive if, we did buy Veloso, I think that would signal one of two things, 1) We will be selling a midfielder, that being probably Fletcher but possibly Carrick or 2) SAF is actually regretting signing Hargreaves as he didn't realise at the time how injury prone he was and is now buying Veloso as cover.

If we buy Veloso our central midfield will be:

Scholes-Anderson-Carrick-Veloso-Fletcher-Hargreaves

Two would have to go, so lets say Fletcher is sold, we still have one to many, so does that mean we will just wait for Scholes to retire, or sell Carrick ?

There are so many ifs and buts regarding this transfer, so I'll stick my neck out and say we won't sign Veloso, it just wouldn't make sense to sign a another midfielder when we are in need of a striker.

Eh? that would leave us a bit light IMO ....

Dunno if we'll buy this lad, would love to know where all this money would be coming from though. I think he we have more important areas to address right now.

I am worried about Hargo. Carrick was great last year and I think current form is a blip. Anderson is clearly the future.

The future doesn't exist. So you're saying Anderson doesn't exist.

Interesting.

£10M tops for him. He has a great range of passing, quite a big physique although not the fastest. Would LOVE to see Modric.
Scholes retires - Hargreaves, Carrick, Anderson, Fletch, Veloso - 4 of these players are average going forward, even Anderson looks more like a DM than an AM, but hes hopefully good going forward, thats what worries me. We need a player who likes to play behind the front 2.

Riquelme?

What Anderson was doing in Portugal should ease your worries. He was a brillant attacker. I am amazed how well he plays DM to be honest.

What about Hargreaves moving to RB to succeed Neville... any possibility in that? His pace, defensive awareness, and ability would make him a damn good RB. Although he is an injury liability.

Maybe although he would frustrate the hell out of me going forward, i could imagine him having poor crossing and touch.

Did you ever watch a young Hargo playing the wing for Bayern the year they won the CL? He was amazing then playing wide. Don't know if he could replicate that form now, but he at least *had* the ability.

But the problem is that our front 2 actually don't stay in the front.Tevez and Rooney both occupy the attacking mid position.Thats the reason why Scholes started playing deeper imo.

Hell no!

We have time to make the the Neville replacement.Either Simpson will take over or we can certainly afford another world class right back if he doesn't succeed[which looks difficult].

Hargreaves won't become our new right back, it just won't happen.

This thread has started to plunge into muppetry ... somebody do something!

i'd also welcome an attacking midfielder that plays behind the strikers, but imagine all the hate he'll get for "not tracking back" and not helping defend.
