Messi retires from Argentina.

The generation you mention let him down.

Maradona was the manager in 2010 ffs. Martin Palermo was taken to the World Cup. That alone tells you all you need to know about the AFA and their wisdom. Their selection process is always crazy.

For all this is a great generation of Argentines... they had Funes Mori, Rojo, Biglia etc playing. They're all garbage.

Do you think Argentina's selections and management were perfect in Maradona's era, or is it possible he just managed to overcome the very same "issues" that every national team has when it loses?

Come on now @Brwned , I agree that the issues with most coaches (Batista, Martino) are the same and nothing that Messi shouldn't have to overcome, but Maradona's tenure was a level beyond insane, calling up over 100 players to the NT in under 2 years? Nevermind the fact that he literally had zero experience as a manager or coach... Bilardo had been in management for over a decade when the 1986 WC came around and Diego had him for the 7 years of his peak (1983-90). Messi in his peak got Maradona (2008-10), Batista (2010-11), Sabella (2011-14) and Martino (2014-present) -- and the second Arg got experienced managers (the latter two) the team's results went up immediately as well.

Overall I feel your comment is right in that there shouldn't be too much focus on these things as eventually Messi should be judged on himself most of all, but at least Maradona's tenure is a notable caveat to that rule in my opinion :D

He'll never win with some people and those some people couldn't wait for this news. As if they need some news to bash him non stop.

With them to prove he can be in the same sentence with Maradona he needs to:
Win the WC.
Be brilliant from first game to the final.
Drag his team basically to the throne.
And also be lucky if he has a tough draw so he can prove he singlehandedly beat all the best teams. As if he can make his own draw cause even if he wins the WC and beats some bad teams he isn't a GOAT or can be cause it's just Iran or something.
He must score in every game. So they can't say he didn't score in knock out stages.

You can see how some think in the example of WC 2010. Argentina was in the final but some mentioned how he didn't score after group stage. Same would be said if he won the WC.

Even if he would do all that his detractors would mention how Maradona himself dragged poor Napoli to Italian throne and Messi has it all easy for himself in Barcelona and where would he be without Xavi and Iniesta. Oh and fair enough he won the WC but hey Maradona dragged subpar Argentina team to the throne and Messi has Aguero, Higuain, Di Maria and others. (and that's not true, 1986 team was not that bad and they had a great manager)

It seems like him not winning the WC deletes all he has done in club football. However you spin it some will find something wrong.

Oh and he didn't try other leagues, right.

Oh and apparently he is a bottler. Not that he shined in numerous big games in CL and in Spain. That really never happened.

Personally I adore when I hear he can't peform without Iniesta. All that assist from Messi, that's cause of Iniesta too.

Ridiculous.

It's funny how a tournament that wasn't supposed to take place in the first place has lead to so many downfalls. Dunga got fired because of it and half the Argentina national team are retiring

If you watched the Copa this year, you'd have seen that he's been terrific.

Could argue he's played against nothing teams though and can't handle it on the big stage without his career assit-iniesta.

There is enough argentine talent to win world cups and definitely Copa's.
Had this been Ronaldo or Rooney, they would be lambasted but Messi is the darling of football.

This is what I was talking about in my post.

Don't you guys get tired of the same old ridiculous statements.

Doesn't stop people jizzing over Ronaldo when he scores X amount of goals against relegation fodder.

The quality Messi has showed this Copa, any team in the world would have struggled to defend against it - his pass to Higuain against Venezuela, his record free kick.

Magic moments.

That would be hard since we have euros every 4 years unlike copa America

Not really, if you include WC finals as well. You will need just 3 years more (considering last Copa was in 2015).

Yes*
Yes

*Just international football, he's still playing club football.

Great news for you as a Barcelona supporter but in my opinion this places him a level beneath Ronaldo, Pele and Maradona. Shocking leadership from him yesterday and announcing his retirement after 3 consecutive final defeats.
That doesn't happen to the greatest of all time and you don't just give up at 29.

Another WUM in this thread. 10 more argentines also played every match, why didn't they win it? So name who's the better player in Argentina who can replace Messi. If you are so confident on your hypethesis, want to bet that Argentina will win in Russia 2018 without Messi. And as for Copa, everyone's favorite leader Maradona failed to win it as well.

if the reports are correct they all quit because of the Argentinian FA... @IFC 1905 probably knows more though.

It's not only the FA issue. They also have underperformed. Only Messi has been good with Argentina in these kind of tournaments.

There were public polls today. 85% of the people asked, want Higuain out. 80% want Aguero out. 75% Want Martino out. 80% Want Messi to stay.

I think they are done. All of them bar Messi & Mascherano. We need to focus on the new guys that are coming.

Everyone including my dog has a different definiton of this word. People say he's not good for NT, now when he gives the chance to other players to do what he failed, they are again unhappy. If people like you think that he's isn't good for Argentina, then you guys should be happy that he won't play for them now. I think he couldn't care less what anyone thinks about him at this stage.

Just saw this after the game and before knowing his reasoning for quitting it all sounds quite pathetic. It's hard to not look at him differently after this and I wonder what the Argentinian people feel about it.

@IFC 1905

Is it a myth that Messi is not considered as a 'true Argentinian'?

Argentina has a lot of anti-messi guys. They say that Messi walks in the finals. That he is catalonian. And much more things like the one you said. But most of the people adore Messi here. And even more people after yesterday's final.

So a vocal minority as usual. Thanks

We feel he's right doing it. We don't want him to leave, but like Maradona said today, they left him alone. The FA, the players...everyone.

Maradona, today "I wanna fight with Messi against everyone who left him alone. We need him to continue"

Ah man, that's fecking cruel. I mean, he might be a spoiled coward a mouthy midget and a horrible cnut but those people are taking it a bit too far.

What does that mean that they left him alone?

Let's start with 86 Argentina;....rest of this shit, blah, blah, blah.....

Ah poor old Messi. If only he'd been alive during Maradona's time and had great players around him like the world class squad containing, erm, erm, can't think of a defender's name, but you know, that argie. And Valdano, of course, the fat Ronaldo of his day. If Maradona was young now with shit players around him like Macherano, Godin, Higuain, Aguero then of course Maradona would have failed epicly worse than Messi. Epicly!

Poor old Messi. No shame in retiring because you can't win. Sign of a true world class champion.

What does that mean that they left him alone?

Well, the members of the FA made everything wrong until the point that Messi exploded and said that they are a disaster. The organization was just too bad. When Messi exploded because their flight was delayed, the FA released a statement against what he said. There are a lot of issues that the world doesn't know. For example, Martino's salary is delayed, the last time he got paid was like 4 months ago.

And then the players left him alone too. Aguero, Higuain, Di Maria...they were a shadow and watching Messi trying to run against 4 guys in front of him, starting in the midfield, just broke our heart. Even the anti-Messi guys I know said he played with two balls yesterday.
