Messi retires from Argentina.

What does he mean "Taking this decision for lot of people who want it".
Hope Barca has not asked him to do this.

They were saying on Talksport earlier that many Argentinians dislike him because he joined Barcelona at such a young age.

If he doesn't have to deal with the NT nonsense, even better for me as a Barca fan. He never got anything other than controversy and bad press from his own countryman. If that fuels him to become even more ruthless for us, I couldn't care less. If someone thinks they have better player than him at Argentina, let him play in Russia and win the finals.

This thread is bad and I have not even participated.

wasn't it only last week the clip of Maradonna whispering to Pele he isn't a strong character, I mean what the feck. why would you keep turning out for them?

I read years ago that he said that Spain offered him to play for their national team when he was like 18 or something , and that he rejected it immediately.

Don't Argentinians know this?

Yeahhh but we love players with big mouths like Diego & Calito Tevez. And they must come from Boca Jrs because that's the people's club!

We actually don't even deserve Messi. Messi should have a WC and 2 Euros with Spain right now.

There's a Massive movement on the social networks to stop Messi from retiring.

"Don't leave" is the Ole's cover for today.

#NoTeVayasLio (DontLeaveLio) is TT in Argentina, and second world-wide.

The old never ending debate who's the best ever. Here is my make take on this. I did a similar post regarding Messi a couple of years ago and that didn't end well with some of the younger posters.

I think it's fair to say that Lionel Messi is on par with Maradona regarding talent and ability. There are differences but all in all they could be twins playing in different eras.

On club level Messi's stats and trophy cabinet is a lot better, but comparing Barcelona m/2008-2016 with Napoli in the eighties is pointless. Totally different challange, environment and totally different clubs.

The only place where both participated in similar enviroment was playing for their NT.

Three finals is huge but to be the best you must win something. That's it.

On top of this Maradona was on a different stratosphere as a captain and a leader. One was literally speaking a midget and the other one was a giant. Maradona took his country's challange on his shoulders, he delivered with and without help from Gods hand, he stepped up when it matters. Small margins. But that's what separate the best ever from the second in the history books.

Lets be honest in the whole of Messi's playing career he hasn't had to face any difficulties except injuries when he was younger. So it really seems like hes been cuddled the whole time if he decides to quit like this. Imagine how he'd react if he didnt play for Barcelona and instead was at Madrid with all their inhouse madness.

I was referring to this post. Maybe Maradona didn't feel the pressure, but looks like expectations were high.

Also to add on to that, he was twice transferred for a world record fee (to Barca from Boca and to Napoli after that) and he'd also just won the Guerin d'Oro (POTY) in a star studded Serie A league in 1985, so I'm sure there must have been quite a fair bit of pressure on him. Well perhaps not so much on the Argentine side as a whole as they were fairly underwhelming, if I'm not wrong, in the build-up to the WC but definitely on Maradona who would have been under the spotlight.

He will come back like a Messiah for the WC in Russia!

Don't you know the story with Zidane, Makélélé & Thuram who retired in 2004... and came back 3 months before the start of the WC 2006?

I expect the same scenario  They will reach the WC 2018 final (like France did in 2006) but win it!

Even if he comes back, it doesn't change the fact that he quit on his teammates and country after a loss.

You ignore the story-telling.

Argentina will be very poor in 2018 and Argentinians will implore him to come-back :)

He'll return, no doubt. This was basically the real life version of a FM rage quit.

I'm 99% sure he'll be back sooner or later. Now it's time to se the likes of Dybala, Icardi, Correa, Lo Celso, Ruben and more.

what do you think of Cervi? he impressed me far more than Lo celso, but then again i only watched them like twice

I think that, except perhaps Totti, Messi is the biggest talisman any team in top club football has right now. He is FC Barcelona, and that's barely even an exaggeration.

That's talking of him as a symbol. In terms of a player with impact within the team, not just against the opposition, Messi is not among the biggest.

IMHO. And in order to not be an arsehole de-railing the thread, and just so it's stated for the record, I hope Messi rethinks this and puts on the same kind of masterclass play as we've seen him do for Barcelona, and wins the WC with Argentina in 2018.

He'll be playing at the WC in Russia, no question. Just being a moany cock as he lost and had a horrendous pen.

He's good too. But they both have been inconsistent. They didn't shine together. It was one or the other.

No doubt the quality is there.

What is the position of Lo Celso? Central Holding Midfielder? Box-to-Box? Deep-lying playmaker?

People calling him a coward must realise that great footballer or not, he is still a human. If he is not enjoying something anymore then he has every right to not do it again.

However, even I feel that this is a knee jerk reaction and he is going to be back for Russia but yes, his chance of winning an International tournament is shot.

Coward. He'll be remembered for being a very good player, probably one of the best. But never THE best.

Do you also agree scholes and Keane were cowards

What anout Cantona retiring from the game completely at the age of 30

Bit selfish if you ask me. He said '"It's been four finals, I tried". Well, it's been four finals for most of his team mates, too. Should they retire?

He just needs to get on with it and stop thinking about himself. Everyone wants to see Messi in major tournaments.

Well they have, haven't they? Aguero, Mascharano, Di Maria and Higuain have all alluded to following suit.

Retired at 29?
Greatest of all time?

It must be easy to get promoted these days. Especially with the feckwits in the transfer forum judging a player completely after a game.

Stop looking at this through Brazil colored eyeglasses. Just because your country ranks World Cup above UCL, doesn't mean the rest of us do.

Messi have 4 UCL titles. that's GOAT.

So does Seedorf.
