Best business we've done in years. He was never good enough. Ligue 1 might be closer to his level, even if I think he's a nothing player.

Manchester United does not a buyout clause in Memphis Depay transfer to the #OL ! #MUFC #RMCsport

i would take this guy's word over all others.

Means we have sold for about 38m this window - not too shabby considering our outgoing transfer history. I bet both Schneiderlin and Depay were on pretty big wages too, which will be nice to free up for the summer  @VanGaalEra

Didn't get an alert for the tag, good thing I read through the thread

That's about £200K a week off the books and £40M in the bank

This is sad to see. Thought he was going to be a star - all he really needed was a bit of confidence.

Huh? One bad game? Depay has had about 5 good games for us at best and that isnt an exaggeration.

Maybe you have forgotten how things unfolded with him aswell as the entire side. I'm not really trying to pin the blame on rooney either. We were playing a style of football that limited out goal scoring opportunities and for a few games we scraped wins. However the issue with Rooney was very clear from the beginning. Eventually his poor performances resulted in clear cut loss of confidence...i mean this in all seriousness. Watching those games early in the season I could see the problems building up....
what did Van Gaal do to shake things up? he dropped Depay when our entire attacking play was poor. He mixed mata and young in that position. From that point on depay was on the bench, he didn't get a look in at all. Strange, to buy a player for £25mill with such promise and then just not play him....of course we signed Martial too but as a striker who Van Gaal then shoved on the left where Depay plays to accommodate Rooney.

What Depay needed was a lengthy run of games. Putting him on loan to a team like Everton for example would have been a better move than 'selling' him to Lyon.

Fantastic! Love this new cut throat approach, the type of player Fergie would have kept hold of for 5 years too long in his later years.

Apart from forwards who sometimes play wide of a three (e.g.. Lingard), we've got two true wide players in Mkh and Martial who are both in reasonable form (bit patchy but ok). Maybe Depay didn't got a proper chance but if Jose isn't going to play him (which he isn't), what's the point in keeping him?

'Selling' him gets us money/reduces wages .... loaning him means no cash, maybe paying part his wages .. no point?

This deal suits us and him.... we all move on and put the cash/savings towards Griezmann and/or a defender in the Summer.

Particularly if there isn't one and for that price Lyon shouldn't give one.

Also it would actually be a little odd to try and negotiate both a sell-on and a buy-back. I think we might well have insisted in the former, and it is far more likely to come into play too.

I hope we could've sold him to a midtable PL team but all in all, this is a great deal considering the context. The days of other teams feasting on the likes of Chicharito for bargain prices are over :D

Best of luck to Depay. Didn't kick up a fuss, just wasn't good enough.

I think the credit should go to Mourinho on the transfers. Just look at his history.

Gotta leave some credit for Woody too. Look at how much he got for ADM.

Hopefully he gets some confidence back in France because our national team really needs a somewhat decent forward after Robben and RVP are retired... last few generations we had Kluivert, Bergkamp, RVN, RVP and Robben and now we have Memphis and Janssen. Memphis or Janssen both wont get close to those former world class players levels but they can hopefully have some good moments...

Memphis was never going to be good enough for Manchester United. Maybe he will be good enough for the level below top tier but i doubt it.

We should not have sold him. Should have kept him for a season and played him a lot.

Really? He failed under 2 managers.

The standard of the league is now very high and we cannot carry passengers like Morgan S, Memphis, Januzaj and previously Anderson, Macheda, etc.
Like with Morgan S, I have no ill-will towards the player and I hope he does well for his new employers (unless he plays against us). ;)

Goodbye and good luck Memphis.

I think Memphis had a chance to do well for us.
Remember Blind was the POTY in the Dutch league, when he arrived at MUFC and he was one of LVG's best transfers!
Same for RvN.
Dutch players can do well in our league. The problem was that he just wasn't good enough (for whatever reason).

I think it was worth a punt.

Depends how much the buy back price is. Maybe it's just a first option to match any future bid accepted by another club. Maybe it's a preset price. Maybe it doesn't exist.

Will it be enough if they reach CL just once of the next five seasons then?
With the competition in Ligue 1 for only 3 CL place, I believe it's pretty much just 1 would do.

Buy back is different than buy out right?

Everywhere he goes his players sell for big figures, we've always been shite, 6 months after his arrival and we're at it too. There must be a correlation.

Or it could simply be a combination of us paying close to £90 mill for Pogba lifting the prices - not to mention every club in the P.L suddenly having a lot of money pressing the prices up.

It is said buy back not buyout and yes they are different. A buy back is a clause where a player can be bought by his former club for a setted fee while a buyout clause is a clause that allows a player to buy his contract.

Finally get Depay of the books. poor player at this level.

Hopefully, clubs will realise just because someone is top scorer in an inferior league it doesn't mean they will be a success over here. Depay top scorer in Dutch league 2014-15, & Janssen 2015-16. Says it all.

53 appearances according to the BBC. Can hardly remember any of those. At the moment he's a bit of a flat track bully, but I hope that he can kick on and develop with some more game time. Would we risk a buy back even if he was tearing up Ligue 1?

Can see him doing well there. He's very much a confidence player and, against the less difficult opposition he'll face in France, he can build that up.

Fee sounds about right.

Schneiderlin and Memphis both left. Darmain not highly rated and Schweinsteiger completely out the picture. Great last Summer for LVG. I remember some saying it was our best ever at the time.

True but Blind was the best player because of his football intelligence. He uses that same intelligence in the premier league. Memphis was the best player because he was stronger and also faster than every fullback in the Eredivisie and the whole PSV team played in a way so he could use his strenghts. (Overpowering a fullback during a counter or in a 1v1 situation).

The main difference is Blind is a really smart player (he has to be since he is has the speed of a dead turtle and the strenght/power of a -insert something very weak-) and he also manages to "outsmart" the players in the premier league. Memphis cant overpower the fullbacks in the premier league because every fullback is strong, fit and most of them are also quick.

I didnt like Memphis during his time in the Eredivisie because he seemed limited in his football talent and just stupid/dumb in his mainstream media and/or social media performances. I love having Dutch players (RvN actually made me follow the club and become a fan) at Manchester United but i wasnt happy with the Memphis signing. In glad he is leaving.

Btw, when RvN joined Manchester United the Eredivisie wasnt as bad as it is now. All our young players (<18) who can kick a ball in a straight line are bought by English and Spanish giants and most of the older players dont want to return to the Eredivisie. Eredivisie is shockingly bad.. just look at how Dutch teams perform in Europe. I think we also lost our direct CL group stage spot now...

Wish the best for the lad. Didn't work out here unfortunately but perhaps he can flourish in a different environment.

Who knew the overpriced teenager we bought on deadline today that nobody knew of would end up being the best signing of the summer?

I am not sure about that though.. his game resolves about strenght and power. In he French league there are a lot of strong African/French players who are also very strong physical. Memphis might struggle in France.

The only time that he looked a decent prospect was when he was utilised through the middle. Best of luck to him and fair play to Woody for getting that much plus the add ons.

Lyon fans seem excited for the signing. Good for them. Wishing him all the best.

Amongst many other things, how weak and slow he turned out to be was probably the most disappointing things. I remembering thinking he was a speedster with good acceleration that was going to bully fullbacks and show his strength when coming shoulder to shoulder, but turns out he spent half the time being pushed onto his arse and he isn't actually that fast. He needs to go back to being more lean which might help.

Another thing was finally thinking we had a good freekick taker. Did he even get one on target for us?

Stats say he scored 7 goals in 53 games but I can't remember any of them for some reason.

All the high hopes really does make this feel like one of our biggest flops.

Bettered only by the borderline hysteria when we signed Falcao and Di Maria in the same summer. Van Gaal has to have one of the worst PL transfer records of any manager ever, in terms of money spent vs succes of his signings. Remarkable.
