Memphis Depay | Lyon player

Was 34mil what we really paid for him or was that the max fee including all bonuses? We will have already written of a season and a half of whatever we paid so from an accounting perspective that will soften the loss. Plus we get his wages off the books, always a good thing to take into consideration.

But it happens that some players don't pick up in a new league irrespective of managers. Memphis looked good in the World Cup and had 2 good seasons for PSV so much that PSG and Liverpool were looking to sign him

Managers knowing players don't really work a lot. Emery knew Krychowiak and many on here thought he was world class yet he looks worse than Schneiderlin for PSG. Sometimes people just don't make the step up to a bigger club.

Absolutely, however usually you can see the players' ability and it's just a question of confidence and suitability. With Depay though I genuinely struggle to see what enticed us to buy him. Looking at him you'd say his physical attributes are perfect for our League, however his technical ability is just so far behind that of decent Premier League wingers that I can't understand what we saw in him.

If he were a player that came out of the United academy I'd say he's destined for a club Championship club like Ipswich. He'd be strong enough and has a good shot; against Championship defenders given more room to operate he might be a really solid player. However he just looks light-years away from having the talent for this level.

As a contrary example Januzaj clearly has a lot of talent which you can see even at Sunderland, however it's quite obvious that he isn't suited to the pace and power of the Premier League. You could understand us buying him for £25m and it just being one of those things you put down to bad luck.

His passport.

I don't think you can quite attribute it as lack of talent. PSG and Liverpool were also interested in buying him for more or less the same few so he couldn't have fooled all 3 clubs into thinking that he had the talent. He clearly has the talent and was key in PSV winning the league.

I remember watching few of his international games before he played for us and he genuinely was their best player and was touted to be the next robben by Dutch fans. He failed to capitalise on his step up which is unfortunate but I think he does have the talent. It's similar to many players we have seen. At their last seasons in United, Evans and Fletcher looked like they would be lucky to play for a side from league one yet now they are key players in a side currently vying for top 10 finish. Some players just don't succeed in translating their ability when playing at United due to the pressure involved

Just my 2 cents anyway

Crap fee tho. You would think Leicester, Stoke etc would be interested and willing to pay more.

Why? I assume their scouts have also seen he cant get past a single premier league rightback so why would he be able to do it when he plays for Stoke instead of United.

Shaqiri and Arnautovic are also better players

Fees reported these days are pretty much always including bonuses and add-ons unless specified. Clubs don't really pay cash upfront anymore but rather spread the fee over months/years and clauses.

PSV might be disappoint by this transfer because I imagine they won't get as much money now as they hoped.

The OL and Manchester United have agreed on a transfer amount for Memphis Depay. Only a few details are yet to be settled.
The leaders of Lyon and those of Manchester United finally agreed on the transfer amount of Memphis Depay Wednesday noon. But there are still details to be settled, which encourage caution on the side of the OL, already agree with the player on a contract of four and a half years. In case of finalization between the two clubs, the attacker (22 years) could arrive in Lyon in the next hours to pass his medical visit. Depay to the OL, it burns ...

Think a lot of you are incredibly harsh on him. Yes, he isn't good enough and he's been a major letdown, but that was no fault of his. He obviously has the right attitude and has said the right things repeatedly (and at the end of the day, that is all we can go on), it's just that his talent is not at the required level.

If any of you were given the chance to join one of the biggest clubs in the world, would you take it, or reject it?

Would mean that we get 40m back for the purchases of both him and Schneiderlin. Good business considering MD's fee was paid in installments, so if anything, it would likely be a net gain on his purchase.

We still have to pay off the installments on the base fee. I wonder if we get both the fees for Morgan and Memphis up front or in installments?

Even if they pay it all up front (a rarity I believe except for the lower fees) they still amortize the fee over a period of years (4 or 5 being the most common I have read about).

We really have upped our selling game, year or so ago this would have been a £12m sale without any addons or buyback clause.

There's literally no downside to that transfer. Fair play to whoever got that done.

You forgot to mentioned that we would've paid his salary for the next 2 years as well ;)

If we have a buy back option then I am happy, I feel he definitely has the potential to be top class so nice to know we won't let it go to waste

That's a great deal for us, he isn't worth half of that at the moment.

How have we suddenly become this good at negotiating? It makes such a change.
JOSE MOURINHO

Still makes me laugh thinking back to all the people who didn't want him as our manager. This guy was and is the PERFECT succesor to SAF.

Good luck Memphis, its a shame it didn't work out here for you, but United march on.

He has always looked shellshocked to be fair, he just doesn't have it in him to play on this stage.

Joses brought some of Chelseas salesmanship with him. Cracking numbers for the two let go.

Mourinho probably has a role in it, but also I guess Woodward is starting to learn his trade in the transfer market, he's still quite new to it and I'm sure he and his teams are constantly progressing in this domain.
