why didn't we loan him to a premier league club? I still think it was Van Gaal's fault for what happened to him (and Angel Di Maria)...why sign a player like that then drop him after 1 bad game but continue playing rooney no matter what?

Huh? One bad game? Depay has had about 5 good games for us at best and that isnt an exaggeration.

VERY good piece of sbusiness from us. Happy with that. I don't think we'll ever activate the buy-back clause as I have no faith in him improving much, but at least we come out of the deal looking good, as well.

Mixed feelings about this one.

I think he had potential and maybe we've been a bit harsh on him, selling him on so quickly. He proved in the Dutch league what he could do.

On the other hand, reports are saying we have a buy back clause in the deal so if the change in scenery allows him to finally fill his potential, we could be first in the queue to have him back.

Wishing him all the best!

Good fee for a player who hardly got a sniff lately. His life style was one of the major turn off points for me. Didn't strike me as top professional and didn't seem bothered to proof his worth or he had a fight in him.

Why do you consider his good performances in Holland as proof of what he can do, but don't apply the same weight to his performances in England? Why are the past 18 months not proof of his ability. Maybe he's just not cut out for the PL? He hasn't given any indication since joining us that he is ready to be even a squad player for us.

Fantastic news, cant stand him as a player. Good fee as well :)

Great protections in case he develops into the player we thought he would with the buy back option and the sell on fee. We have all our bases covered.

I share the same thoughts on him.

I think the credit should go to Mourinho on the transfers. Just look at his history.

In Holland he was a first team regular. 90mins every game, so he was able to establish himself, get into a rhythm and show what he can do. In England that was never the case, even under Van Gaal. He would get a few games together then LVG would start with his changes again.

Don't get me wrong, his attitude didn't help either. He comes across as having the "I'm a big time player" attitude without proving it on the pitch. Now he'll be playing in a weaker league at a smaller club, so maybe this will be the kick he needs to either step his game up or continue a career of mediocrity.

If there's a buy-back clause then I'm assuming that must've been agreed by Lyon, us AND Memphis? That suggests we still rate him, and the guy himself sees a potential future with us in the future.

I hope this is a kick up the bum for him to get his head down and work hard.
Doesn't really mean we rate him.

It means we are covering all eventualities with both a buy-back and sell-on clause. Just good business sense.

I'm glad he's being sold abroad. All ex-United players have a habit of playing blinders against us. Memphis can be unstoppable on his day

Good luck to him. I actually liked his character, and have heard nothing but good things about his professionalism and work rate. However, we were probably a level too high for him.

I very much doubt we will be exercising any buy-back clauses. He's not quick or tricky enough to be a top class winger, he's not a good enough passer to play in the middle and his shooting (which was his strength in the Netherlands) has deserted him because he doesn't get the space here that he used to.

He didn't drop him after 1 bad game.

Rather he kept playing him months after only 1 good game.

And Rooney is just an easy target.

I'm really surprised about the buy back clause but good to have all areas covered.

I wonder why he didn't want to stay and fight for his place. Mourinho was a fresh start. Maybe he just wasn't up for the fight, or maybe he didn't enjoy life in a Manchester. Smart management from Jose to weed out the players who aren't cut out for the very highest level. I don't see any reason why Memphis or Schneiderlin couldn't have put the hard work in to regain a place in the team but both jumped ship as soon as they could.

From what Mourinho has said, Memphis has been working very hard on the training pitch. I think Mourinho just doesn't fancy him and what he offers.

Means we have sold for about 38m this window - not too shabby considering our outgoing transfer history. I bet both Schneiderlin and Depay were on pretty big wages too, which will be nice to free up for the summer  @VanGaalEra

Done well to get that for him, awful player.

Looks like United have turned a bit of a corner this season in terms of getting reasonable/good transfer fees (him, Schneiderlin, McNair).

So £16m with £21.7m adds on if Lyon gets into CL + players get a new contract and we also have an option to buy him back again. It wasn't a bad deal to sell players to outisde PL.
