Memphis Depay | Lyon player

Is this the right move for Memphis, if he still has ambitions to become one of the world's best?

Yeah agree. I don't know why people take it so personally, pathetic.
Jealousy.

He never had any attitude problems whatsoever, people see a few fancy cars and assume he doesn't put in work on the training ground.

He just wasn't good enough for us, theres nothing wrong with that. He isn't the first and certainly won't be the last player who we sell for the same reasons.

Good luck to the boy. A front 4 of Memphis, Cornet, Fekir and Lacazette is dreamy stuff, I will definitely be following his career closely

I'm sure he would have chosen Madrid if they were interested. They weren't. He's not exactly spoilt for choice.

I was referring more so the decision to move from the PL to the French league. I'm not sure who'd have wanted him though, Everton showed some interest but maybe they decided on Morgan instead

JOSE MOURINHO

Still makes me laugh thinking back to all the people who didn't want him as our manager. This guy was and is the PERFECT succesor to SAF.

Good luck Memphis, its a shame it didn't work out here for you, but United march on.

Oh you think he is in charge of transfers do you ?

Bye, bye Missis Mempiss Depay.

Another tick in the 'Dutch league is wank' box.

I guess the prem is also wank since Morgan Schnederlin flopped here too...

Glad we've got some clauses in there. He'll probably do very well there.

Honestly didn't guess he would be this bad for us...

Deal actually looks good. Buy back and sell on clauses show we still think he has a chance to be a top player.

First time we did business with some common sense for a young player. I guess Jose learned his lessons by inserting a buyback clause and sell on fees after his experiences with Lukaku and de Bruyne.

If there's a buy-back clause then I'm assuming that must've been agreed by Lyon, us AND Memphis? That suggests we still rate him, and the guy himself sees a potential future with us in the future.

I hope this is a kick up the bum for him to get his head down and work hard.

I still think Memphis will end up a top player. It didn't happen for him at United - doesn't mean it's over for him.

Good move for all parties imo.

Nah, Mourinho magically transforms the selling ability of any club. Since he left Chelsea its not like we've seen them sell an unwanted Brazilian for 60M.

I'd say there's a mixture of factors at play. Wages of certain players like someone else said with Nani and van Persie (Memphis and Schneiderlin will be on much lower than those), more clubs interested with ability to pay fees (West Brom were interested in Schneiderlin too) and on managerial side Mourinho had the relaxed attitude that they weren't in his plans (obviously, due to lack of games), but if an appropriate deal wasn't agreed that was right for all parties then they'd still be part of the squad for the remainder of the season.

Spot on. That's what Mourinho's impact amounts to. He isn't magically raising fees single-handedly, but gives the negotiators the rather powerful option of not selling. With Moyes (wantaways) or LvG (philosophy outcasts) we didn't have that.

£89 Million for Paul 'Former United academy graduate' Pogba in the back of our board's head when they inserted that clause me thinks.

Depay was one I had big hopes for but unfortunately it's not worked out for him here. Good deal for both parties.

Its still wrong. The inital fee was around 20m rising to 26/7m

I understand it was €27.5 m with add ons making it €31m. In May 2015 €27.5m was about £20m. BBC always seem to mix up euroes and pounds deliberately I feel.

Excellent fee.

Almost made our money back on 3 of our worst ever flops (Di Maria, Morgan, Depay).

Top work from Woodward.

Yeah I think it was. BBC would look even more ridiculous if they suddenly went with a £20 million fee now though after claiming it has been £31 million since the day we bought him (despite every other source saying otherwise).

I think this is a really good deal for us, not just the figures being mentioned but the percentage on his next move and the buy back clause is really clever business. I think this sends a good message out that if you want our players then you have to spend the cash, the money floating around in football is huge and we as a big club always have to pay a premium so its nice to see some money coming back our way for a change. There is a good player in Memphis somewhere, whether or not it will shine through at Lyon i'm not sure but will be looking forward to seeing how he gets on.

Everywhere he goes his players sell for big figures, we've always been shite, 6 months after his arrival and we're at it too. There must be a correlation.

I think it's more to do with Woodward. I'm sure he's gone on record as saying that we've been ripped off when selling players far too often and that we need to extract better value from clubs. I can't find any record of this though so it's possible I've made this all up.

why didn't we loan him to a premier league club? I still think it was Van Gaal's fault for what happened to him (and Angel Di Maria)...why sign a player like that then drop him after 1 bad game but continue playing rooney no matter what?

Lmao. So we might make a profit on this if the add on clauses are met. We sell Depay and still hold a ton of leverage over his future if he comes good. Fantastic negotiating from Woodward honestly.
