Memphis Depay | Lyon player

Its amazing how some people can watch something and interpret it in so many ways. I guess people are just looking for confirmation of their pre-conceived views.
Some people are just obsessed with player's social media. I wonder if they party in their work clothes. Salty!

was a minority. Most I would say thought we got the better talent and pool were paying over the odds for someone less talented
Majority of people were comparing Depay to Origi, not Firmino.

Everyone here was comparing Firminho to Depay. The former looked United bound until we opted for Depay instead and laughed at Liverpool for buying Firminho (he had a slow start to the club). Soon enough we realised who was better.

Maybe it was just me then who didn't think there was any comparison between the two players. Both at different stages in their careers. The comparisons would've been more apt with Origi who also has done better than Depay by the way.

Thanks, aren't majority of posts there extremely level-headed? Many posters believing that Firmino is a more finished player and might have a better start than Memphis. To be honest that's exactly how I remember that comparison. Would've loved to see a poll on the thread though.

The knee jerk posts slating Firminho came after he started playing for Liverpool and during his difficult start. Think they were mostly in his performances thread.

Well, if he started badly, it's only fair to criticize him. Nothing wrong with that. Combine that with him playing for liverpool, we are bound to have a laugh. The difference between Firmino and Depay, in the hindsight, seems to be that Firmino is a lot more mature to recover from a poor start, whereas Memphis just hasn't. Memphis is also a couple of years younger and could still go on to become a proper player.

Yeah they are probably as obsessed as you with Fellaini, so why the outrage?
Being critical of a professional for what he does on the pitch be why another does on social media is the same? Well done to you!

There's being critical and being obsessed, each to his own, so if people consider Depay's off-pitch behaviour to be connected to his on pitch performances (which is perfectly fair), then so be it.

So, what are his strengths? I hear athleticism, but he doesn't seem to have good stamina, is slow, looks strong but falls over quickly and I haven't seen any kind of agility either - Zlatan is more agile. His shooting is abysmal, his dribbling is wayward and his passing merely average. If I were to create him on FIFA, he would be absolute wank. So him not staying at United may not be the end of the world. He does give off the impression of being quite full of himself as well.

One look at his Twitter account confirms he opitimizes everything that is wrong with the modern day footballer.

Far more concerned with how he is viewed publicly than getting back into the team and making a career for himself at the club. Just happy to pick up his no doubt extortionate wages and flaunt off his champagne/celebrity lifestyle.

The difference between the sort of messages Mkhitaryan was sending out whilst not in the team and this clown are night and day. Get rid, a complete waster.

My point is not that people are obsessed with his social media per se but using using every post to stir up misinformation about his attitude. He sent a tweet wishing everyone a happy new year with a positive message at the end, he wore a hat and dove into a pool but some on here have turned that to,"he's on drugs", "rap star attitude is the reason why he isn't playing" etc. People are still using pics from over a year ago of Memphis in a RR, bought with his own money as a bad attitude stick to beat him with. But I guess it's each to their own

Using social media has absolutely nothing to do with being a footballer. He's a 22 year old man that fecks around on Instagram. That says absolutely nothing about the modern day footballer, instead it says absolutely everything about the modern day world.

Your post (and others like it) is unfair. What Memphis does or doesn't do on social media has no bearing on his performance as a footballer.

He's been shit here, absolutely, but what he does via the Internet has got nothing to do with that.

I particularly love the "modern footballer" thing, like Twitter existed decades ago. Imagine if it did 50 years?

I don't care about the social media or the turning up at the boxing looking like a bad fancy dress pimp. When he plays I don't think he looks especially lazy or unfit. He's just crap in almost every respect and he's now officially been here nearly 3 days too long. What happened to this definitely January move he told Jose about?

At least give him until the end of January before complaining that he hasn't left in January.

Before January we heard about a new club every week, and now it's completely silent. Wondering if he'll even get sold in time

Nice seems to be a right club for the "wrong" players so far huh? Didn't Ben Arfa played a blinder of a season with them before PSG? Now Balotelli is working his way up there too. Probably Nice should try and buy Memphis and get his career rejuvenated. He is still very young compared to Ben Arfa and was touted to sign for Barca before signing for PSG too. So, it is not too late yet.

Nice would be a good move for him IMO. And in France he could be the difference in them winning the league or not.

Great option for Nice but wow what a fall from grace that is. From 7 for Manchester united to Nice..

Let's hope that maybe gives him a shock to reality, maybe he will get himself sorted out and Mourinho will give him another chance next summer.

Nice are currently leading the French league. It's not that massive a fall from grace really. He could be their talisman to win the league. I'd see that as an exciting challenge if I were him.

Ben Arfa and Balotelli have revived their careers there recently. Could well be a good move for him as they appear to get the best out of mercurial talents.

I would imagine it's very unlikely Nice are going to pay the £20m odd it's being suggested that we want?

Just comes across as a bit of a bottle job really. When things are going well he is fine, but any adversity or challenges and his head drops and he becomes useless

Is Nice just enjoying a very good vein of form or do the new owners (a group of American and Chinese businessmen iirc) pump in a lot of money relative to Ligue 1 standards?

I thought Mourinho said he wasn't letting anyone bar Sam Johnstone out on loan? Saying that, I feel like a a correct loan move is the best option, from a United stand point, as it can either raise his price for an eventual sale or help him regain his place in the first team squad.

He did, so this isn't happening.

Not necessarily- if there's an option to buy then this may persuade Mourinho? I think it's the best way forward- wouldn't want Depay to show his quality after a run in a team and not be able to bring him back.

Surely a Chinese club will take him and can see him happily going

He'll do well in the Chinese league.
He is very good against poor opposition, so the Chinese league would definitely suit him.
If I were his agent though, I'd advise going back to PSV, where he would hit the ground running and probably be the POTY, get his career back in gear and then go for another big move.
He is a young man and he should not be spending his time on the bench or the reserves.

His problem was that when he first arrived, he thought "he made it". Hopefully, the last 2 years will teach him that that's not how football works, so the next time he gets a big move, he will strive to improve himself, further.
