It's gonna be either left side of a 3 at the back or at wing back. I would confidently say there's not a hope he'll be fit to play wing back without breaking down repeatedly and he won't give us enough going forward anyway as he's simply not fit or dynamic enough at this point given his issues. Left of a 3 is his only hope if his minutes were managed with Martinez. I still have my doubts

Yeah I don't buy into the assumption that Amorim will come in and play 3-4-3 this season.

This guy is a crook. Done at top level football and doesn't fit the hard working/hit the ground running philosophy of the new coach.

Amorin will ship him to Saudi Arabia hopefully in january.

There should be no reality where we go into next season's squad planning with Shaw being in it. Plan as if he doesn't exist, prioritize the LB position first and foremost and look to sell Shaw the best we can.

I'd lose a lot of faith in our new structure if we go into next season relying on Shaw being fit.
Same here.

A guy who really only tried to be fit when England wanted him for the Euros. Hasn't been fit for Utd for 9 months, but a new manager coming in and Malacia is seen back in training and all of a sudden Luke Shaw is ready to start again.

He should have no future at the club, he's 10 years at Utd now and we're still hearing the same old guff over and over. But yet, he's still one of the best left backs around, best defender best this, best that..... but only when he's fit....

Technically he's a quality player, but he's 29 and at this stage he is probably not going to all of a sudden be able to stay fit and play every week, he should be one of the first out the door.

When fit and in form he is the best LB out there for me. We do need to get rid at the end of the season, however.

Talk of selling Shaw or that he must do x or y to start ignores the fact we would have to pay him a substantial amount to get rid of him and no club will pay a fee for him without us covering a lot of his wages
Agreed. Just be ruthless. Let him recover and play his way back into form and the team and if he doesn’t retire from England sell him in the summer.

At this point in the season, and I realize it's still only November, we need to let Shaw sit on the bench a long, long time before bringing him back onto the pitch. Dreams of selling him, given his wages and injury record are pure fantasy.

Well said, couldn't agree more. I am not a fan of Shaw for quite some time. Too unreliable and to my liking, way too comfortable when playing. There aren't many teams out there who afford themselves the luxury to have so many fullbacks who are slightly above average at best in terms of contributing to attacks. Feels a bit like the McTominay chapter... as long as the player is around, there will always be a slight drag to hope for the best.

People can insult him all they like and I get the frustration totally but he's the best left back we have by an absolute mile and we still have a lot to play for this season so this is great news.
What’s the point of a player that is never fit.

That's why I said we should look into it. Going into another season relying on his fragile body to stay fit would be bonkers. We got rid of Sancho, we can work something out with Shaw as well.
Sancho was quite a different scenario he was ostracised but is still young and without major fitness issues. Quite easy to imagine Shaw not being fit for a prolonged period again in his career. Think we would basically have to payoff his contract to get rid of him which I guess would have an impact on our ability to sign new players

Good post, I've never been able to warm to him.

It's not enough to be a good player.

Can’t really say someone’s the best player when they play like 3 games a season.

He's averaged 32 games per season for the last 5 seasons and played 47 the season before last.

If he's not the best left back we have then I'd love you to tell me who's better.

How long until we get on the hype train ready to be hurt again?

And was our POTS a few times since he broke his leg. Yes his availability is a big big issue and it unbalances the side but a ruthless football focus outfit would have him battling with someone like Nuno Mendes or the best new young left back for the spot and not just signing backups for the sake of it. That’s how high the competition needs to be here or at any other major club that wants to win

He’s the best only because he’s the only one, Malacia can’t be counted.

He's also very good but anyway what you said goes back to the exact thing I said. We should be happy if he's fit to play.

We aren't selling him and signing a left back in January and there is still a lot to play for this season. So if the best left back in our squad by a distance is fit then that's good.

He’s just to un reliable. I’d rather we played Amass and developed him.

Eh? Could you explain this masterplan to me please?
He is on silly salary till 2027. He is not gonna go away if he can just waltz in whenever he is fit into the team. This way, at least he has some motivation to try to find another team.

Yes cause Shaw definitely wouldn't be comfortable not playing football whilst we pay him millions of pounds.

He’s absolute class. But have to question commitment when England calls v United on regular base. All things considered by far our best signing in after Sir Alex era…but do we commit to him? He doesn’t maybe commit to us

Is it really a 'regular' thing? He's missed very important matches and tournaments for England as well.

Hell, if things had gone differently and he hadn't got injured again we might have been saying that going to the WC with England got his fitness up so he was ready for this season. Unfortunately he did get injured again, but I believe that happened when he was back at Utd again so it's not like going to the WC actually caused it.

He is still by far our best left back when he is fit and in form. Like you said, he will be till 2027 at the club anyway so we should use him while we can if that improves the team. Putting him on the bench seems to be a 'cut the nose to spite the face' type of move.

It's a myth. In his England career he's been selected for 46 squads and missed 53 squads due to injury, so 53 potential caps he's missed out on. He's been unavailable for England more times than he's shown up for them.

With his injury issues I just don't see any way he can consistently play as a wing back with the intensity and workrate required. Playing as a left center back might be his future if he's going to stay fit.

Could be, he is very good at playing as a left center back too.

I dont think it changes much. We need to buy another left back anyway because of Shaw his injury record. Shaw can play left center back and cover for left wing back. Malacia looked talented from time to time but the jury was out if he was ever going to be starter quality. Missing a full year of development likely means he will never become starter quality. Dalot and Mazaroui are both better on the right. We need to buy a new left (wing) back in the situation Shaw becomes a left center back and in the situation Shaw is going to play as a left wing back.

Given that he's class when fit, and that so many United players have had injury problems in recent years, 25% of me hopes Amorim comes in, they really look at his training programme, and they're able to keep him fit to be the left CB of a 3, if that's what they want to play as a formation. It's better than no Shaw. The other 75% says he's simply done as an athlete, which is sad.

Criticising Shaw for not being fit andavailable I totally understand, feel the same way. Had a major injury but we cant rely on someone touching 30 to remin fit....

But critiising him as not being very good is absolute nonsense. One ofthebest left backs around, a very good lcb andwould probably be ideal in a back three. He has been consitently top quality the last few seasons.....whenhe has been available.....being available is the problem and wo can comment, but dont know thetruth behind that

He is our best LB, because we will not buy better or quality LB till we can push him out. And we need to push him out because he is almost never fit and in form and he can't be our no 1 choice.

I find it such a baffling argument that he’s our best LB, as he’s basically our only one. He’s not one of the best LBs around either. Unfortunately, as I genuinely dislike him, Robertson has been a much better fullback. Gvardiol has been better for a couple of seasons now. In Europe you’ll find plenty of better LBs.

His top level is excellent, but even after an injury it takes him a while to get to that level, plays there for a short while and gets injured or loses form.

IMHO, he might just be our most overrated player. Our best signing post Ferguson he is not; that would be Bruno.

That being said, having him fit for the season would undoubtedly improve the team; Dalot has been woeful as a LB, and Martinez is a LCB. But Shaw needs replacing - it’s a top priority. He’s one of those players that is ruined by injuries and a lack of consistency. Even at his very best, I found him lacking in intensity, however.

Get rid, who cares if he is 'class when fit'. It's a waste of high wages for a player that has only been fit for 50% of the games available since he joined the club.

Replace him with a promising up and coming left back that is reliable.

Id swap each player here. Bruno certainly most overrated. Good 18 month time at first. Shaw unfit a lot but when fit and up at speed always consistent good
