Luiz Gustavo

I wouldn't mind a tentative link in some daily rag to give me a sliver of hope at this point. I like Gustavo and think that of the available players, he's pretty much what we need.

Beats the incessant links with a certain more expensive/less suitable player.

If he was all that I'm sure it'd be bigger clubs than Werder Bremen in for him.

The fact he's surplus to requirements at Bayern too... No thanks.

You have to laugh at this kind of blatant logical fallacy that people roll out unashamedly

I'm sorry but if this guy is the business Bayern wouldn't be looking to offload him first of all, and the apparent interest in him would be from bigger clubs secondly. That's pretty obvious to me.

Frivolous internet links to footballers may not be the best option if you're searching for hope in your life.

Someone got out of the wrong side of the bed I see.

Has to be considered that we're one of the few really top teams out there that isn't properly sorted in central midfield. Bayern, Barcelona, Juventus, Madrid, Dortmund, City (maybe)...they're all well equipped in this respect already. Bayern of course more than anyone; aside from Martinez in that position, they've also got Thiago, Schweinsteiger and even Alaba who can play deeper midfield roles. On top of that they've now got to start juggling Goetze into a formation that is already loaded with talent, which by default will mean less time for midfielders like Gustavo in other positions.

This as well as us not having a clue who's in for who, to be fair. Both ourselves and Arsenal could be in for him for all we know. Chelsea, too.

I don't think anyone would argue that Gustavo is the business in the sense of him walking into the majority of top teams on the planet, but he's such an obvious signing for a team in our situation midfield wise at the moment.

I'd be shocked if we were in for him anyway. He's not a typical United signing, we tend to evaluate players for months and maybe even years before making a move and I don't think we've been keeping tabs on this lad.

You seemed depressed that we weren't linked to Gustavo in the Daily Star. I found that a bit disturbing, even by the low standards in the transfer forum.

One of the last decent options, not a world beater but better than some of the names we've been linked with.

Depressed is a ridiculous exaggeration. Nothing in my post even suggested that, so you've found something 'disturbing' that isn't even remotely the case.

I like him as a player and hope we sign him, usually we get linked (via an array or sources) to targets we are in for. We were linked to Thiago, Baines and Fabregas who we seemed to have had genuine interest in and I was merely suggesting that Gustavo is a player I would like to see us linked with, simply because I hope we are in for him.

No need to get overly touchy, I only posted that Star link because it was the only one I'd seen actually name English clubs in connection with him, other (less frowned upon) sources had suggested English clubs were in for him but didn't name them.

He reminds me of Marlo Stanfield from the Wire.

From what I've seen of him, he's not just a midfield enforcer, he can pick a pass as well and score goals, so he could be worth a purchase.

I have never seen him play, but if Bayern bought and played him in the majority of games when he was there, he must be a good enough player for us to go for

Pretty much our entire midfield would be deemed surplus to requirements at bayern. Heck, barca let Toure go. If you can't get the best then something very good that's better that most of what you have is worthwhile.

I think he fit into our midfield very nicely.

Tidy on the ball, great tackler and has good stamina. Can also score goals from long range, something we sorely miss right now.

I don't know him well enough to make a judgement. But I fear it'll be a while until players from overseas without PL history would even be on our radar again.

He's what we need, but I've seen nothing whatsoever linking us to him.

Apparently Arsenal had a bid accepted. Well, there goes another good midfielder.

Arsenal have signed up Jovetic, Higuain, Bernard so far. All this news has originated from a metro article.

Don't understand, why would we be interested in a tough-tackling midfielder with proven CL pedigree?
And one that is likely open to a move given his spot in the pecking order.
And one that is prime age for a midfielder, whose ability isn't based on potential but would slot straight in right now.

Yeah, doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I think we should go after Cesc again. Or speak to Bayern about Thiago.

Geoff(Arsenal's primary ITK) said we were in for him and far down the line.

I think I might cry if you get him :(

Can we have one of your midfielders please? Arteta? Wilshere? Ramsey? Diaby? I dont even care who, just one of them...please.

eh? thats strange logic.

Yeah it's not. People were fawning the same over Yann M'Vila few years ago, he is currently playing trade in Russia.
Of course sometimes the big clubs miss a trick, but usually they get it spot on.

It is strange logic. Thiago was allowed to leave Barcelona because they couldn't guarantee him games. Doesn't mean big clubs shouldn't want him. Bayern have arguably the best midfield in the world. Martinez was excellent last season and it doesn't look like he's going to be played in CM much. They have so many good CMs that it was inevitable that with Thiago's arrival someone was going to leave. Doesn't make him shit/not good enough.

Well done for missing my point completely. What I meant that the top clubs usually snap up or have an interest in very good players, without being disrespectful but I don't think Wolfsburg belong in that category right now and the fact that they're the only ones who have shown concrete interest in him says something.

All this Arsenal link is created by Metro so far.

Was he the same guy who said Fabregas to United was looking likely?

No he was the guy who said Jovetic and Higuain were as good as done for Arsenal.

Cheslea have been linked with him as well, along with Arse and a few other clubs

It's a poor argument anyway IMO, just watching him makes it clear he is good enough for our team

Say it's a poor argument but that's what happens in transfer market, I've seen him and he's been impressive but I was just saying that Cunto logic wasn't bad.

Generally it's probably not bad, but I wouldn't say it was great either. I mean more than anything else we can't tell which clubs are interested in players, so its not even an easy thing to guage.

Then there is the fact that Gustavo actually has been linked with good teams, about as good as he could have considering the midfields of other top sides like Juve, Barca, Madrid, Bayern.

But yeah, the last point is the biggest because Gustavo isn't a random player nobody has seen, so we don't need to judge him on whether or not he has been linked to big clubs. For both Bayern and Brazil he's proven to be more than good enough for us or Chelsea.
