Luiz Gustavo

We need two central midfielders and they are both different players. So it doesnt matter if we are waiting for Cesc, who by the way will absolutely not move here.

If anything, this guy's profile is more what most people were crying out for, given that he can certainly play instead of Carrick (not that they're the same or anything, but he would certainly be the more defensive of a midfield two), and probably alongside Carrick too.

I was being sarcastic. I fully agree that we need a Gustavo type player, in my opinion far more than a creative passer.

I haven't for one second even remotely considered it possible that Cesc would come here.

How much is he touted to be going for?

Bayern paid 17 million EUR for him in Winter 2011. Bayern will not try to gamble for it if Gustavo has set for a special club as they just cannot give him the possibilies he needs at Bayern this year - especially as Schweinsteiger will probably the most defensive player in Bayern's midfield in most of the matches. But Rummenigge said that there are a couple of EPL clubs, Spanish clubs and a Russian club that made requests. So I guess he will cost about 20 million EUR.

He's good enough to fill in for and start with Carrick, in my opinion. Nothing overly expressive about his game but he's certainly no Jones either - the comparison in here with Gilberto Silva is a reasonable one. Can definitely pick a pass (the one leading to Pique's own goal last season for example) and can turn his way nicely out of trouble a la Carrick.

If he's available and we're not in for him, I may well jump on the "MoYz iz a R4tard1!" bandwagon. :) I think we need a Fabregas or Modric as well as him to help with our composure in the centre but it's extremely important we sign someone like Gustavo.

OptaFranz @OptaFranz
93 - Luiz Gustavo had the best passing accuracy of all Bundesliga players in 2012/13 (93%, min. 500 passes). Interest.

Got sent this by a newbie-Hellhunter(sorry for the late posting).

Had 12 shots in the Bundesliga - what lead to 4 goals. All but one from distance...

He is more of a sweeper - but last year in the Bundesliga he often showed that he can get more offensive, too. He is the relieable defensive partner behind a central and probably offensive midfielder or hanging striker.

For a defensive midfielder he is pretty skinny - height: 187 cm, weight: 80 kg

Whereas the other Brazilians at Bayern are more the "louder" and "funnier" ones he is more the quiet type. And he is one that never makes problems and is very relieable - somebody that easy adapts and knows the rules. Not in the middle of the park (or dressing room) but no outsider.

We'd be mad not to be in for this guy - I really hope we were the English club than enquired.

There were a couple of English clubs that enquired. Not one. Rummenigge told that they had very much enquiries from Spain and England for him.

It would definitely be an astute signing if it happens. Which English clubs would be in for him? You'd have to think City, Arsenal, Spurs, and probably Chelsea wouldn't be.

Gustavo and one more quality attacking midfielder would be ideal but I'd be content enough if we just signed Gustavo for the time being.

I like this guy. Keeps it simple, prone to fouling but gets the job done. Surely he would prefer United to Wolfsburg. But no, I'm sure Moyes has his Gollum heart set on his precioussssss Fellaini.

Well he's a much better DM than Fellaini, has played in the champions league and at the highest level and is much more in line with what some people are asking for, a backup to Carrick because he wont be expecting to play every single week. All that is great but... Will he sell some wigs?

I think it's about time we started embarrassing ourselves by trying to sign this cnut. I've no idea if he's good or not, but his name ends in a vowel that isn't i and he's a midfielder, I think, so let's get on it.

Who is with me?

This is a realistic target as far as availability is concerned. If we could chase one last target this summer, make it this one.

I still think we should go for him but unfortunately he doesn't even seem to be on our radar.

I think he would add a lot more stability to our midfield and free up Carrick to play a bit more risky again because he knows he isn't always the last line of defense in midfield.

Common Moyes make it happen.

He'd be great. Everyone I know that supports Bayern rates him and everytime I've watched him he's looked good as well.

I agree. For some annoying reason it seems the onus is on 'PL proven' though.

I'd take this guy in a heartbeat tbh. Clearly up for sale, would play here, etc. Are we just too proud to go for him, or do the scouts/Moyes not think he's good enough?

That's a pure assumption right? He's been settled in Germany since 2007, perhaps he doesn't want to move to England?

Well he's not PL proven no...but he very much is CL proven when Bayern ripped European teams into shreds the last 2 years.

He might not be the type of player Moyes wants for our midfield right now.

If we were in for Thiago and after that no Fabregas I think it's pretty clear that we are looking for a midfielder with great passing vision and who can provide a good amount of goals as well.

I can understand that Moyes wants such a player but I also think we could do very well with another defensive midfield option like Luiz Gustavo but then again maybe Moyes sees Jones as this option for the future.

Who knows, we are just mere Muppets and can't possibly understand the inner workings of our transfer business and only trust in Moyes and his team that they know what they are doing.

You don't have to convince me, I think he's the DM we should be looking to get and an infinitely better footballer than Fellaini, completely available, and all for a lower price. can't understand why we aren't in for him.

He is not a back up option - and he will not go to a club where he is one. Then he can stay at Bayern. He will choose a club in which he will be a starter - with Scolari he is a starter in the Brazilian World Cup team at the home World Cup and he does not want to risk that. I guess he prefers to play CL or EL, but when that does not function Wolfsburg is not that bad option as he will stay in the Bundesliga and in his team with Diego and Naldo there is two other Brazilians playing that Scolari watches.

At Bayern the problem is that Guardiola does not plan with a defensive midfielder at all. A lot of us would like it if he stays as we doubt that will work too good - and then there is no defensive option apart from Martinez available, especially when Schweinsteiger is injured you need to change the system as both Kroos and Thiago will need a defensive cover. Last year Gustavo was used behind Martinez and Schweinsteiger - and Heynckes used him in about every match when he was matchfit. Even if he was the backup he still got 37 matches (and missed about 8 to 10 because of an injury) and got more than 2000 minutes match time.

If Bayern would have known how Gustavo develops in the last year - he always was great in the defensive ways, but when you look at the youtube video posted you see that in the last year he has shown a lot going forward, too - they would not have bought Martinez.

--------------

One thing is sure - Moyes has watched him in the recent year. Moyes has told in a long interview with a french newspaper that he watches the movement of Thomas Müller closely and that he tries to teach his positioning and running to his Everton forwards. As he did that he has seen enough of Gustavo, too.

I wouldn't sign Gustavo as a back-up, but to play alongside Carrick. I guess it remains to be seen how Moyes structures the team, but I'd like two deeper CM's behind a 3-1. I just don't think a 4-man midfield works in the current game, it offers much less options going forward.

So Gustavo works for me, but I always wondered why we never saw it appropriate to go for Italian and German midfielders, two nations that have a strong belief in midfield being rock-solid with hard-working midfielders. Apart from Carrick (& Fletcher a distant memory) who the hell have we got that makes our midfield strong? If we don't sign someone, then Jones has to be an option. I'm kinda hoping we don't sign a CM because it's looking increasingly like it will be Fellaini...and that's no good.

We're signing Thomas Muller, you say?

No. No chance. But yes, Moyes made a request to Bayern the first week in July. Kicker magazine (relieable) told and Müller was asked for it but told that he is not interested in leaving at all (and Bayern would not let him leave). It was not big in the news. Moyes told before that Müller was his wish player but that would never be possible with Everton - so I guess when he came to Man Utd he made a try even if he was pretty sure he gets a "no". You know that Moyes appreciates work rate and team play - so it is not really amazing that he likes a player like him.

Lovely face

Very decent player... but there is a reason Martinez was picked ahead of him for the big games.
