Luiz Gustavo

So Thiago wasn't a priority because Moyes wants players proven in the league and now we're supposedly interested in Gustavo?

I think he would be excellent if we want to play a team with two holding midfielders like Bayern last year.

Carrick plays the Schweinsteiger role and Luiz Gustavo the Martinez role, goals have to mainly come from our three attacking midfielders and the striker anyways.

It wouldn't be an attacking enough pairing for the majority of our games to be honest if we were to get him, but useful for certain games/situations.

It worked perfectly for Bayern. The trick is to get your offensive fullbacks go forward as much as possible.

Rafael and Evra would be great for that kind of play.

On top of that a lot of people seem to forget that Carrick is quite good going forward if he is given permission to do so.

While he played with Cleverly of course he had to usually stay back because Cleverly was the one doing the work going forward.

I have absolutely no concern that a combo of Carrick and Gustavo could work quite well it's also defensively much more stable than a combination of Cleverly and Carrick because we would have two defensively strong central midfielders.

Well our CMs has rarely provided us with many goals, assists and generally chances in recent years so it wouldn't be much of a change.

What are you talking about you nutter?

You said that you couldn't compare Fellaini to Gustavo because,

I am saying that you are ignoring all of Fellaini's Everton career (not Belgium, feck knows where you got that from), where he played as a defensive midfielder.

We can compare them because we have seen Fellaini play defensive midfield, well you apparently haven't but most of us have.

I misread - but the point I was making was that he's player who performs despite being largely out of position. I've seen him play in midfield plenty of times, and he's donw well - I didnt think I needed to say that and that it would be obvious. To me the fact that he's happy to get out there and do a job anywhere on the pitch for his team is a positive, even if he has to play in a position he might not enjoy.

I was simply commenting on someone who stated that Gustavo was clearly a better player as if it were a simple fact. He may be decent, but he's playing in a brilliant side where he's limited in what he has to do. My point was that Fellaini doesnt have that luxury, and also plays in the PL and knows what its all about.

Transfer news: Luiz Gustavo happy to remain at Bayern Munich
Luiz Gustavo: Happy to stay and fight for a place at Bayern Munich

The Brazilian midfielder has seen his place in the Bayern side called into question following the summer arrivals of Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara.Luiz Gustavo insists he is not looking for a move away from Bayern Munich amid mounting transfer speculation.

It is difficult to see how Pep Guardiola is going to fit the wealth of talent he has at his disposal into a starting XI, and keep everyone happy over the course of the 2013/14 campaign.

The potential availability of Gustavo has been noted at Wolfsburg, who have admitted to holding an interest, while Arsenal have also been linked with an imminent approach.

Gustavo is aware that his future has become the subject of much conjecture, but the 26-year-old says he has not sparked the rumours and would be happy to remain at the Allianz Arena.
A man who helped Bayern to an historic Treble last season told Deutsche Presseagentur: "I want to stay on at Bayern Munich.

"I am under contract with the club and I want to fulfil that commitment.
"I have been in a position to fight for a first team role throughout my career. I will keep on fighting this year, too."

Pretty sure he will consider a move if one of the top clubs comes knocking. Of course he won't move to Wolfsburg, that wouldn't help him at all if he wants to start for Brazil at the world cup.

If the interest of Arsenal has any basis, he should consider a move there. He would have a high chance of playing CL there. He has also enough qualitiy to become a starter (I rate him higher than Ramsey).

He will for me probably become the biggest "victim" of Guardiola´s new system and I don´t see him getting quality play time there in the next season, even though his attitude is really admirable.

We could do a lot worse than go for this kid.

Good passer, works hard and gets stuck right in. Can score some crackers from long range too!

Agreed

Brazil 2014 must weigh extremely heavily on his mind, it'll be an absolutely immense world cup and for a Brazillian it will be extra special (obviously)

At the moment he has his place, but next year that could go to anyone with Paulinho, Hernanes, Ramires and now that he's at City Fernandinho maybe

If Dante carries on the way he is they might even play Luiz there and go with Thiago/Dante at the back - lots of options.

If he stays at Bayern I think he'll lose his place

I have made up my mind that he'd be a perfect addition for us playing alongside Carrick. Should at least enquire Moyes.

Something I asked in the fellaini thread. How does this lad compare to him? From what little I've seen of him, comes across as someone who could both partner and play in place of carrick.

Exactly this. He's also comfortable on the ball, has a good range of passing and a decent shot. I've always thought we need a more defensive minded midfielder compared to the creative one (although both would be ideal) as we have Kagawa and Rooney for creativity. Gustavo would be ideal for this. If he's even remotely available we should we sniffing around.

He could partner and play in the place of Carrick. But, he is simply not good enough to bring in.

Of course he's good enough, he'd be our second best midfielder and was part of a very good Bayern team that handled Madrid's midfield better than we did. No harm in losing out to Javi Martinez

He's easily good enough, to be fair it's not hard to be when our third best midfielder is Anderson.

Quality player.

Surely something (someone) has got to give in Bayern's midfield, especially considering it's a WC year. And let's not forget it's Alaba's preferred position too.

I'd love us to get Gustavo, not top banana but would add to the squad.

Everything's so quiet around him, I don't really understand it. He's a quality player and he's very unlikely to have any serious playing time next season. We should definitely try to get him.

I don't know good enough or not but sure hope we do get a better quality midfielder than him. Still think we should have gone for Paulinho.
All we can do at this point is hope. We aint signing a world class midfielder. I guess we have to settle for the likes of Gustavo and Fellaini. They arent terrible by the way either. For now we need options and they might do. All the good ones are young and settled in their club and the older, experienced ones will be more expensive. We have to look at 2nd tier players for now.

Don't put Gustavo and Fellaini in the same category, Gustavo is a much better player.

In my opinion, we need a creative/dynamic midfielder and a younger back up to Carrick. Don't think Gustavo fits in either category.

You are right that time might be running out to sign a really top class player. However, I would rather we spend money on McCarthy and Cabaye.

He's 26, he's six years younger than Carrick. Definitely not a creative midfielder but he would be excellent as cover for Carrick and as a partner for him in certain tougher games.
